- Oscar-nominated actor James Woods (Salvador, Nixon) presents the 2017 Writers Guild of America, West Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement to Academy and WGA Award-winning screenwriter-director Oliver Stone (Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, JFK).
The Writers Guild Awards West Coast ceremony was hosted by actor-writer-comedian Patton Oswalt (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Veep) on February 19, 2017 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
The Writers Guild Awards honor outstanding writing in film, television, new media, videogames, news, radio, promotional, and graphic animation categories.

The Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement is given to that Writers Guild member who has advanced the literature of the motion picture through the years, and who has made outstanding contributions to the profession of the screenwriter.

I liked Stone's scolding the shallow, PC Hollywood crowd for being anti-Republican and anti-Trump because it's 'cool,' while not criticizing Obama and Hillary who have been just as responsible as their predecessors for starting destructive wars. The lack of common sense is why people are turning away from politicized content in entertainment.

Seven minutes in Oliver Stone gives his speech. I am sure it will mean so much to those screen writers who like coal miners are down in the deepest part of the earth. Their struggle and work will bring us the stories that will make our lives better. Maybe the actors will learn something from Oliver Stone's speech. You don't have to go along with the crowd to be great.

I have a great respect for James Woods because he sticks by what he believes no matter what it may cost him. He is a man of character and not a sell out. What you see is what you get with him and he is not afraid to speak out for what he stands for, which very few in Hollywood do because they are afraid they will be blacklisted. James Woods has been around for a long time and is an excellent actor and I admire the fact that he stays true to himself and what he stands for.
Sometimes he can be a bit of an a**hole, but is at least he's honest with who he is and is not afraid to do so. Which is more than I can say for most celebrities.
