Awesome! Well, there will definitely be a variety of options mentioned on the channel. And I'll certainly highlight the "travel friendly" gear when I can. Again, thanks so much for letting me know.
Maybe this is best for a video, but do you feel there will be photographer/vlogger industry boom as the world opens back? In the since that countries and places need tourism to pick back up fast. Should people be hitting up tourism boards right now to gage interest?
Industries/businesses are definitely hiring photographers and videographers....Now and in the foreseeable future. Big events and conferences are certainly not the place to find work, but museums are doing virtual tours and need video, remote destinations that don't have a lot of people are also needing video. Many of us (online creators) are filming "commercials" and photoshoots in our homes of products. But yes, tourism is taking a hit, but the need to tell the story and show the experience is still there. You just have to get creative with it. But I do know of photo/video creators finding work.
Great review! The sound using the Deity in this review is amazing, but I'm curious about your set up. How dead and treated is your room, and what type of inline or post production audio enhancements were used? We're currently spoiled with the audio quality of Shure SM7B's directly into our Rodecaster Pro II, through Cloudlifters. I'm debating giving our Rode NTG-1 a go for single host use cases for that "out of frame" look, but worry that the quality will be significantly different from content created using the Shure's
Yeah for a multi-person setup you really will need to treat the room. I still use this mic in the studio, but I do have a sound blanket at an angle above my head…I actually added this after this video. A cloud lifter (or equivalent) is going to be necessary. I was just recording into a Zoom H6, which is still my main interface.
i like the idea of having a shotgun mic for podcasting how about if you have some guest all in the same room? is that still advisable? i don’t mind if it’s only 1 waffle than separately
Well, you could do it, but you’d likely need to have the guest sitting on the same side as you. This is mostly based on the pick up pattern of the mic.
High quality work Kevin, great content, very useful and well prepared. Thank you for sharing. Keep it up, and bring us more video-filmmaking related content. Would be great to see what you ve been doing/work-filmmaking related/ and how you got into this youtube gig. Thanks.
Thanks! I do want to make more filmmaking content. It’s been a little rough as far as getting outside of my own backyard to film. But, it’s coming. And how I got into TH-cam, well, I may just have to do a Q&A 😉
@@KevinRossRN I always tell people audio is everything but most people just focus on my phone record 4k on my camera record 1080p at 60 frames per second. That's all good and dandy but if it your audio is all muffled up no one cares
Thanks! As far as the setup you’re looking for, are you set on a shotgun mic for streaming or do you want to have a mic that you primarily have set up in front of you?
@@KevinRossRN thanks for your reply I'm yet to to make a decision on a mic. I use a lavalier mic for now, but I will be upgrading to a better mic soon, that said, I like the concept of not having a mic in front of me, hence the shotgun mic being a favourite option. But I don't know how to go about its connection and devices to use with it for streaming and recording.
I know I've recommended a couple of mics for podcasting, but if there's only one mic for video work, podcasting, streaming, voice overs, ASMR/Sound effects, and interviews, then a shotgun microphone is my answer. The S-Mic 2S has met all of these needs.
Good suggestion. But let say you want to buy another additional mic (just one) that will be mostly used for podcasting (for guest), what would that mic be? Another shotgun mic, or a dynamic mic? Thanks :)
Is a short shotgun mic different than a pencil condenser mic? Well, they both look the same to me (I am talking about a samson CO2 or a Rode NT5). Also, please elaborate on a "moisture-resistant mic". Can we make a samson CO2 moisture-resistant?
Well, moisture resistant in the sense that if this is out in the rain while using it that it’s supposed to not impact the integrity of the mic, which I’d defer to Deity to explain how they make this happen. Are you wanting to use a mic outside our around moisture? And as far as the CO2, aren’t these two separate mics? I’d have to research these a bit more.
@@KevinRossRN I am actually using a hand full of mics 🙈 - so not really the one mic for everything scenario. I just love having a perfect mic for the job and also I like not having to move my mics around for different situations and they can just stay where they are. The Rode VideoMic NTG on top of the camera when out and about. The Oktava MK-012 for the overhead placement in my YT videos. The Shure Beta 57a (two of them) for podcasting in person or remote interviews. The ATR2100 if I need a third podcast mic (it just lingers in the drawer for those times). And the audio interface and recorder is the Zoom F6. Looking forward to more videos from you as we all grow together on TH-cam. 💪 Let's get this.
Ah yes, it's a good problem to have when you can have a mic for each use case and not have to worry about moving them. First world/tech problems to have. You've definitely got that audio on lock my friend. That ATR 2100...one of my favs. Used it for years podcasting, and still use it for podcasting. Keep rocking faces. I'll catch you around.
It's changed over the years ever so slightly, but this is going to be the closest shock mount to the one I have, which I purchased many years ago...but this one should work: amzn.to/2B2IF6c
How much percentage gain were you using with this shotgun mic? Also how many inches were the mic from your mouth overhead? Do you have a video on how you edit your vocals? Thanks for your time!
Just a reminder that every interface will be slightly different. So on the H6 I’m anywhere between 4-5. The mic is about 8 inches away from my mouth. There are some videos where I share some of my editing workflow…I’d have to find a link because I’ve done quite a few videos since then. But do keep in mind editing is a bit more specialized for your voice. Same with the mic. I do love this mic and haven’t replaced it for my overhead workflow, but certain mics are just tuned to a specific voice. Also consider room noise.

Hello Kevin. I am going to be recording a podcast with 4 other friends. We only have a shotgun mic for right now until we are able to purchase more equipment. Do you think the shotgun will able to record all five of us, if it's placed overhead and we sit close together? lol
