Started this video Saturday morning in Australia... listening to how you gift watercolours etc... and decide to get on my local facebook marketplace... discover lovely elderly lady selling off her Winsor and Newton paints as she has been having issues with her hands...within an hour I am at her house, hearing her story and promising to give her paints, and a bunch of paper and sketch pads and artist books AND sable brushed lovingly collected over the years a good home. They are my first artist grade quality paints, a total of 39 tubes, most 5ml W&N artist quality, and she sold them for the price of 6 new W&N 5ml tubes equivalent in Australia. I am currently swatching along with you, and if it hadn't been for your video I would have never checked facebook marketplace. So THANK YOU.

I've tried a few other TH-cam tutorials, but yours are the ones that come out looking good when I paint them! The others were too skimpy on instructions or much too complex for a beginner. I would recommend in one of the three empty wells of mixing a lavender with the tube paints inside the well and letting it dry. That way you have a a premixed lavender. Since you paint a lot of flowers that would come in handy. You could squeeze out your blue and pink and then squeeze out white until you get the color you like. This was a great video and I am sure it took hours to make!

Emma~ Right around 19:15 in the video, your pronunciation of Lapis Lazuli, though hesitant, is correct. It is a semiprecious stone, I think primarily form South America (my sister lived in Chile for 18 months, and brought a bit back.) It is exactly the shade of the paint you have - I see other comments explain that the pigment in the paint *is* the gem itself, which makes sense and explains why it granulates. I'm new to your channel so I have no idea if you've changed anything since this video was made but anyway, I saw a great idea on Helen Cryer's channel where she swatches every color she owns onto a trading card sized card. She writes the brand, paint name, pigments etc onto the card and then stores them in a trading card folder. I didn't have many paints when I first saw her video so I swatched all my colors into an A5 sized watercolor book. Recently I've upgraded to the cards in a card folder too. It does make it a lot easier to keep track of what you have and you can see when there's gaps in your color range. I also found another use for it. I made up a small travel art kit for my Mum's Christmas but I didn't want to pick her paint colors for her as she paints different things to me. So I gave her the folder to flick through and pick her colors from and then I filled her palette up for her with those colors. That way she could see what she was getting and choose a mixture of her favs and new colors to try out.
As Lapis Lazuli costs more than any other color, and Michael Harding has what is probably the best quality out there, and you find it less than, some other artist that you know would probably be majorly thrilled to have you gift it! And quin gold and quin rose are many artists very most favorite paints, I hope you are excited by them after all!
Oh how fun! I love a good long palette creation video. I’ve not tried the Shinhan watercolours, but did get a dark green gouache of theirs recently which I LOVE!

I enjoyed watching your video on how you considered the colors and I have found that my studio palette is predominantly DaVinci watercolors and I have quite a few mission gold and M. Amazing video and palette! I think that palette is one of the aluminum one’s. I have a smaller one that’s aluminum and was told the aluminum is why the paint doesn’t bead! Enjoy your new palette and thanks for showing us!
The plastic ones bead at first, but get better with use. Rubbing them well with a scouring sponge safe for use on nonstick cookware can help a lot. Some people swear by using toothpaste, and still others coat it with jesso or watercolor ground. I had never considered that a little fine grit sandpaper rub in the center of the wells might keep the paint from falling out when it is closed. I am definitely going to change to a metal palette eventually because my plastic one is becoming stained in the mixing area. For now, I bought an inexpensive rose shaped ceramic palette by Meeden, so I always have a clean white background to mix on. I didn't think it was worth the cost to get a nice metal palette with removable half pans as a beginner. Now I understand the wisdom of being able to pop out the pans to change a color without having to scrape a section out. 😂
Even the bullet proof palettes can stain from your staining paints! I have used the Mr. Clean magic sponge to remove the stains! I have used a knife or wire brush to create a rough spot in wells to keep the paints from cracking and falling out!
@@mjpete27 I have one of these too and it did stain mildly. I actually don't use my old ones much anymore. Once I tried a ceramic palette, I fell in love. @@deborahhillman4120 Yep! Me too! I have several porcelain palettes that are so wonderful. I found using the old butcher trays another way to get great mixing areas! The butcher tray is a metal pan with a ceramic porcelain coating so much lighter and it will not break when dropped!
I have been watching your videos for quite some time and have learned much. I noticed you have a collection of Maimeri Blu watercolor paint colors. Could you tell me the differences with the Maimeri Blu paint compare to others? Thank you.
Hi Emma, thank you for this really informative video. I'm thinking about putting a palette together but wasn't sure where to start, so this is a big help. I have a couple of questions about the different blacks, eg lamp black, Mars black, ivory black, etc What are the differences? Which would be best for mixing with other colours? Have you previously made a video about this, or would you consider doing one? Or maybe one for whites as well? 😉 I'm very new to watercolour, and do find some things quite confusing 😏 Thank you again, best wishes, Jane 😊 x
Hi Emma, pity you didnt put a link to the palette and extra insert , bcause the palette i sau on amazon didnt include the extra palette only the basic. ..
I have filled many wells in my watercolor journey and I have found that if you put a good bead at the back of the well you can use the front of the well for mixing or keeping the colors wet and ready for use! Lovely video, I enjoyed watching you work! I have to say that I don’t miss any Dan Smith colors and have found that I can mix any color they have in their selection of colors, yes even their “precious” gemstone paints!
Lapis Lazuli is a stone used in jewelry beading, making. Its grown down to a paint, like many others...so it will be more expensive if its Earth form, meaning its real. probly also why its graining because its a rock.
Thank you Emma for this video. I loved everything. The very thin tape you used you purchased from Amazon, what brand was it? I will go looking, but am concerned about the stickiness of the tape on the watercolor paper. Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks again.
Wow, that was a lot! I found this palette on Amazon, but I don't find the insert. I did find a Mijello palette that has ... 72 spots, so that went on my wish list LOL! The more colors, the better, right?
Wow! What perfect timing (and first comment to boot!). I just got my first palette but only 11 or 12 colors. I loved watching you set up the palette, squeezing in the paints. You mentioned that you let them dry fully before you start using the palette. My question is when you made your color chart did you do this right after you squeezed the paint into the wells or after the paints dried fully? And how much if any water did you have on your brush. Also I guess how long does it take for the paints to dry? Thanks!
I really hate hearing TH-camrs have to learn to constantly justify their art collections when that’s their job, and they work hard for what they have, and we benefit from you guys showing it to us. If people want to see budget, art supplies and budget videos, then there are plenty of TH-cam videos out there that do just that all you have to do is type in those keywords. There are also a lot of us that might be on a tight budget but like to buy really good quality stuffand love to see other people’s collections. I wish people would stop apologising and putting up disclaimers. You’re entitled to have what you have.

Hi Emma, pity you didnt put a link to the palette and extra insert , bcause the palette i sau on amazon didnt include the extra palette only the basic. ..
❤ this!
I ended up purchasing a tin and used Quarter half and full pans. Fits 102 paints
Thank you! What palette are you using please?
How do you close that large pallet
Love the video and all the colors thank you👍
What brand is the palette - can you provide a link
What starter pan paint do you suggest? And brushes?
Emma, where can we find the palette to buy it? Thanks.
For the love of God please tell us!
Wow, that was a lot! I found this palette on Amazon, but I don't find the insert. I did find a Mijello palette that has ... 72 spots, so that went on my wish list LOL! The more colors, the better, right?
What is the brand please
the best greens are the ones ive mixed myself.
How about adding opera?
Thanks!
She usually allows 24 hrs drying time before she tries out the colours
Emma, did I miss the brand of your new, huge palette?
Watching you pour paint is so satisfying
Do you have a link to the Shin Han palette?
Have you tried DiVinci watercolors and if so, what to you think of them?
Also can we get that palette somewhere?
I miss the rose colours........ wonderful palet!
Would you be able to provide the link to the palette you are using?
I really hate hearing TH-camrs have to learn to constantly justify their art collections when that’s their job, and they work hard for what they have, and we benefit from you guys showing it to us. If people want to see budget, art supplies and budget videos, then there are plenty of TH-cam videos out there that do just that all you have to do is type in those keywords. There are also a lot of us that might be on a tight budget but like to buy really good quality stuffand love to see other people’s collections. I wish people would stop apologising and putting up disclaimers. You’re entitled to have what you have.
I actually subscribed because of her gentle reminder that the joy of painting is not dependant on the quantity of materials acquired.
I’m surprised you don’t have a Potter’s Pink 😊
I remember when I went crazy trying to find Potter Pink! I just had to have it. Ended up getting it brought up from Florida for me. So granulating that I don't use it. :(
@@cindydore4456 I find that if I don’t use too much water it doesn’t really granulate. Even on my Arches paper.
Where are those little containers from?? I need some
Why is there such a distinction between student grade and professional grade? Can you make a video describing the differences?
Do you have a link to the palette and the insert? I tried googling to find it and found something that looked similar, but didn't find the palette with insert.
The insert has to be bought separately
You didn’t mention having MGraham watercolor paints
Where is the opera!! lol xoxo
You're missing out if you haven't tried all of the DS colors.
To many colors for me. I would be overwhelmed. I’m still learning to mixing colors and pigment numbers
❤😊❤
Gosh were do you live? No Amazon one day ?? 😓
I think she meant Amazon was out of stock
She lives in Canada.
I was wondering what empty palette she uses.
I would have wrote the pigments down.
Shinhan Whites are almost gouache ... the whitest watercolor paints ever...
No Audio!
Too many colors.... so many of those are like 1 tiny shade apart... pare that down to 20 and have a go!
