I would have to go with Vegeta as the better overall character. He fights to not only get better but also to protect his wife and family who he cares about deeply, even if he does not come right out and display or say it all the time. Over the course of the shows and series you see Vegeta evolve from a homicidal maniac to a loving family man who has friends he cares about, even in his once rival, Goku. Speaking of Goku, he on the other hand has the mentality of an 8 yr old and constantly puts the world and universe in jeopardy so he can fight people, never once thinking about any of the risks or even hesitating to straight up abandon his family because they got in his way of fighting people. He never learns from his mistakes, he does not care about his family or friends, and has zero growth as a character.
Rather be Krillen. Cause Android 18, and other reasons. Just think of everything you could do within that universe as Krillen. Sure your not the strongest but with the knowledge and access to wishes whenever you want.... You really don’t have to worry, that much. Even if you die, you will just be Revived back. Because plot protection.
It's always been Vegeta. Dragonball is a series about self improvement and who's grown more as both a fighter and a person than Vegeta? No one. Not even Piccolo. He's the man.
@@Alassandros The only thing Vegeta 'suffered' was the loss of his planet, and he appeared to take that in stride. And as a part of Freiza's force, Vegeta did exactly what Saiyans are infamous for: fight. Piccolo on the other hand was ostracized from all society and as such, was forced to raise himself in the wild. I remember seeing an episode where it stated that Piccolo even WANTED to join humanity, but witnessed humans slaughter each other so much that it completely blackened his heart. Vegeta was raised to be the 'Prince of Killers'. Piccolo wasn't. He was just some little green dude lost in the wilderness that saw countless atrocities and found a way to live through it.

As someone who always had one goal and had it taken away from me, shattering my own mental health for years, along with realizing how much it affected me. I always grew up relating more to Vegeta. It's rough, and finding a new goal for myself has been heavy, but if there's one character that I can truly find inspiration in to keep going, it's Vegeta. Similar to that question from Skyrim's best dragon. "Is it better to be born good, or overcome your evil nature through great effort?" Vegeta was never perfect, he was horribly evil for a long time, and I'd never excuse that truth. But while Vegeta still is "second best" (though I guess with the end of Super, that's debatable now) he's still the most human, natural and relatable character in all of Dragonball to me. Which is why he'll always be my favorite character in any media.
Kruseid I’m more of a Goku because I haven’t had that kind of thing happen to me yet. Sure, deaths are terrible and it’s sad that people I know have died, but that shouldn’t stop me from pushing on forward in my life. I’m not looking to be the best at anything, just better than what I am right now.

Obviously Vegeta Although most people say Goku initially, if you think about it, 1. Vegeta is more mature and caring than Goku (Super excluded) 2. He is cooler 3. He is a family man 4. He has a pride that pushes him beyond his limits and literally allowed him to disobey a mind controlling warlock 5. There is a major detail you forgot in your video. You forgot that according to Vegeta himself in Z and Toriyama in the Daizenshuu, ALL full blooded saiyans have a natural urge and desire to keep getting stronger and fight strong foes. (It was never just a Goku thing). That's why Vegeta let's Cell reach his Perfect Form and why he didn't stop training after the Cell Games after Goku and Cell died and Gohan quit fighting. Vegeta was already the strongest person alive during the 7 year gap yet he kept on training.
vegeta was not the strongest for 7 year gap. He was the strongest for a part of it. But goku and specially gohan showed that everyone was far behind gohan during the cell tournemant. Goku was way ahead of vegeta and gohan was way ahead of both of them. Reason gohan sucked in SSj1 vs cell is simply because he was also scared and not a fighter like goku and vegeta

Goku definitely is a hero he gave frieza that speech about saving the universe. He doesn’t let people just come and try to destroy or take over earth. He just happens to enjoy it a lot. He fought with everything he had to stop Beerus from destroying earth even when he almost died doing so even with he couldn’t fight anymore he still was tryna fight to protect earth while enjoying it
Okay, while Goku has had some moments where he has saved the world, he's never seemed to show any specific want to save the world except for when fighting Buu. He'd always be fighting for his own sake, even though he knows some enemies had to be defeated, hence Gohan v Cell.

Goku is social oblivious. He doesn't see his family as family, but companions. To Goku, ChiChi and Gohan are in the exact same category as Bulma and Krillin. He doesn't understand why ChiChi is so determined to make sure Gohan and Goten succeed because he has never had to live in the real world. He couldn't comprehend why Vegeta would stick by his promise to be at Bulma's side when her second baby was born. I'd rather be a Goku. It sounds less stressful, and you can't deny that Goku has a positive effect on those around him. There's a reason Chichi still loves him after all this time. There's a reason why an assassin like Hit started thinking more like a martial artist after fighting Goku. There's a reason Goku's enemies inevitably learn to respect him and most of them become his friends. Goku possess's a childlike innocence that never harshens. He is always entertained by everything he does because much like a child everything feels new and exciting to him, but fighting is still his passion. Goku may not be a family man, but he does his best considering his lack of intelligence and self control. And self control is integral to Goku's character because he doesn't fight to defeat his enemy, he fights to defeat himself, to gain mastery over himself. In Goku's eyes he never has perfect self control because he will never fully master himself, and this is reflected in his actual personality traits and actions. He leaves his family behind to train because sometimes he just can't help himself anymore, he has a limit to how long he can go ignoring his desire to get stronger.
That makes him unstable and it isn't an excuse. If you can't raise children then don't have them. He has a choice he just chooses wrong. He is a talented fighter but as a person and a father and a husband he is shit.
It's like when people say they are addicted to drugs and can't quit and "it's a sickness" and "I don't have a choice"...... Well, you chose to start using and knew the implications. @@hermes0623 I think you give goku too much credit. The whole point of his character is his childish innocence. He just doesn't think, is that a flaw? Well yes and no. I think you're looking at goku like he's a normal person, and he's not. He lacks the sensibility that the average person has, this helps him in some ways and is a disadvantage in others. He isn't unstable, he's just inconsistent. I don't think he even realizes the reason why he trains to such extremes, he just does it because it feels natural to him. He does try to be a father, and we see him trying very genuinely but he sucks at it. He cares about the people around him and clearly gets protective of them at times, but at times he also loses his temper to catastrophic results. think he's a good person but a terrible father. A perfect martial artist but a flawed role model.

Goku won in an epic beam struggle, blasting Vegeta... only to upper clouds where he sat and angsted about his wounded ego and decided a Trump Card was the best going forward strategy. In reality, if Vegeta had just returned to continue the fight and not wasted his energy on a fake moon, Gohan and Krillin never would have noticed the orb in the sky and turn back to assist. Yajirobe wouldn't have the guts to get close enough to a non-ape form Vegeta. And we all know Goku had just tapped himself out using Kaioken for the beam struggle! Not only did Vegeta tie in a 1v3, he kinda defeated himself more than they beat him. Yet the whole fandom talk about it as if it was a 1v1 throwdown and Goku dominated him? Whatever lmao if you all turned off the tv after the beam struggle ended then get out.
Goku. I appreciate Vegeta and his character arc(s?) and role(s) in the series, but personally, I'd rather be like Goku I just want to have fun and excitement and to continue improving in everything and anything I do, I guess
Growing up I had a relationship with a friend where I was the Vegeta to his Goku. Learning to want to and actually forge my own path was a big step into adulthood for me back then. So I've always been a Vegeta guy.
When I was a little kid, I was all over the place for Goku, he is simple, strong and loveable. When I was a teenager for some reason I started to like Gohan more, maybe because he was around the same age as me, or because he loved studying more than fighting, but he still showed some badass stuff, who knows. As I got older and older, eventually turning into an adult, I started to see Vegeta in a better light. I started to understand his reasons and be one with them. I liked the fact that he gets the job done, when someone needs to be obliterated call Vegeta, because Goku would let anyone go, as we seen it before. DBS has put a lot of change on the characters, I think Vegeta starting from DBZ slowly turned better and better. He went through a journey, which wasn't easy or pleasant, but by the end DBS he grew up, just as I did while I was watching him. So in short, Vegeta is my favourite, both him and I needed to grow up in order for me to like him.
crazy because i experienced the opposite lol. when I was a child I thought being prideful and edgy was cool/badass but (vegeta and sasuke are the prime example). But when we got older most of us would realize that the gift of being happy all the time no matter what happened and to be loved is the best gift god could offer. goku has literally both of them. He has many friends that loves him more than he loves himself and has a smile on his face 90% of the time.
Vegeta’s flaw is not being willing to show the same mercy he was given but I agree Goku can be too forgiving. It could easily wind up biting you in real life.

I'd be getting Bulma to replicate the android transformation process so all the non-Saiyan characters can get a power boost to relevance again. Also becoming practically immortal would be handy.
I agree, people give Krillin a lot of crap but always overlook the fact that he is the strongest human on the planet. That is an amazing feat! And he get the hottest girl in the show. And he inspires me. I mean, if he can land a girl like that and not even have a nose, there is hope for all of us right?
In life, you have to two kinds of people. People who lead, and people who follow. Goku and Vegeta represents both of these mediums. Goku personifies security, maturity, & selflessness. He trains to better himself, thus allowing other people to measure up to him, and not the other way around. We all should strive to be like Goku, but realistically, a lot of us are more like Vegeta, hence why fans adore him. Always fighting, working hard, and determined to achieve a certain goal. That 'struggle' per say is what the character is built upon. He's not as 'boring' as Goku. The dynamic is quite common in pop culture. Most notably Superman/Batman, and Naruto/Sasuke.
I don't know I never liked vegeta that way, it doesn't matter to be how developed he's gotten the fact of the matter is he acts like he deserves to be better then everyone else
Goku of course. Hell in this very video you pretty much explain how Vegeta became a better character by becoming more like Goku. He became someone who focuses on what matters to him and is at peace with his past mistakes.
There is one problem with your criticism of Vegeta. He wouldn’t stop training and getting stronger, ever. Not even if he were the “strongest in the universe “. Goku was a #goal, but not his only goal. He continued to train after Cell and Goku died, even though he said “I’ll never fight again.” What kind of warrior continues to train when they don’t plan to fight again? The kind that value training, getting stronger, and pushing their limits. I.e. A real warrior. He said he wouldn’t fight again, because to him, there would be no one else worth fighting after Goku/Kakkarot. Both Goku and Vegeta are true warriors. They just happen to be able to sharpen and test themselves with one another. I choose Vegeta.
rougewarrior26 it’s a problem with what he said, that “I’ll never fight with goku again” is not true, because this is dragon ball, people don’t die forever in this universe, so it’s makes sense to vegeta still training, because he knew goku would come back in some point

As a matter of fact, they specifically said this after the fight. Goku didn't want to be resurrected, as his presence seemed to draw more enemies to Earth. The point is, Vegeta continued to train because he is a warrior. Getting to fight and test himself against Goku during the Buu resurrection was a bonus for him. He trains because he is a warrior, and warriors stay ready. Vegeta even made it a point to tell this to Gohan during the "Gohan goes to high school" story line.
For me personally VEGETA is one of my idols, he will always be my favorite DB character. To point out, Goku showed compassion for Vegeta when him and his buddies first encountered him they could have finished him off but decided to spare him and give him a chance. Without that we wouldn't have been able to see Vegeta grow into the person he is today, so I will always respect goku.
When I first started watching the show in 5th or 6th grade I liked Goku because he was the main character and the hero and I was supposed to. And I started in the middle of the planet namek saga right before the ginyu force showed up so that didn’t help Vegeta’s case 😂😂😂 but after seeing more of the show I decided Vegeta was my favorite. Now here I am a junior in college still obsessed with him 😂😂😂💜💜💜 he’s literally my screensaver...

I'm more like Goku. I do have Vegeta qualities, such as wanting to surpass people, but I'm not mean or arrogant. Mainly I'm like Goku because I enjoy helping people, have a kind nature even at my own expense, and much more (Yes I heard what Akira Toriyama said here). The thing is, Goku has that whole "So you would be stronger if I don't fight you now?" thing and the fighting for the sake of fighting thing. Both of which can put people in danger inadvertently. If it came down to training, I would be Vegeta, since I always pushed my body to the limit (fractured some bones, and have gone too far with the bench pressing, resulting in it falling onto my ribs though they didn't break).
A Vegeta. He might not have Goku's raw power, but he's a technical fighter, who owes pretty much everything he has to diligent training, and let's face it, the difference between the two of them is academic so far as the rest of the universe is concerned. Also Bulma > ChiChi, just saying.

I'd think vegeta because he doesn't regard his children as tools or comrades but as children to be cared for, trained, nurtured, and protected until which point they can utterly anialate anything that comes at them without daddy doing it for them and maybe a little past that. Goku: Throws gohan into various fights a child has no business in regardless of strength. Vegeta is actually a better man as far as family and his mate are concerned... Reading these replies I have to agree. Chichi may be (from the perspective of we readers) the result of Toriyama being no good at writing romance (or women) and needing the help of his team to make Bulma and Vegeta's relationship work, but in universe we can also say that Chichi would have less reason to be such a helicopter mother if Goku put in half the effort to be a good husband and father that Vegeta does. Certainly Vegeta is gruff, and he doesn't show affection readily, but from the rage he showed during the Cell saga when Future Trunks was killed, to being willing to tackle Beerus, the God of Destruction who Vegeta himself was terrified of, when Beerus struck Bulma, we know he cares. Caring that he himself tried to resist back in the Buu saga, only to then sacrifice himself trying to destroy Buu and save everyone he loved. When you think about it, he's also the character whose had the most development over the multiple series. Goku is, at heart, the same food loving boy he was when we met him in Dragon Ball. He meets Bulma, trains with Master Roshi, fights the Red Ribbon Army and King Piccolo, but he really doesn't change. He still likes to eat, and is continually looking for someone stronger than himself to test his might against. Vegeta meanwhile we first meet as an antagonist who blows up planets and kills his allies on a whim. He gets beaten down, seeks revenge, gets killed by Frieza, weeps as he pleads for Goku to avenge their people. He meets Bulma, starts to care about her and their child, sees the man his son will grow into and even expresses his pride in him (in his usual understated way). He tries to revert, thinking it would make him strong enough to match Goku, but realizes he can't go back, exhibits self sacrifice, and then heroism as he holds off Kid Buu long enough for Goku to make a Super Spirit Bomb. Now he's a trusted and loyal friend who might not wear his heart on his sleeve, but you know he always has his friends' backs.
Goku is selfish and maybe he gets mad at himself when others get hurt from his selfishness. And Goku cares about people but he cares more about his passion.
Goku let a man who indirectly killed, Piccolo, Kami, Tien, Chiaotzu and Yamcha, like, so that he could fight him again. Goku let Frieza a man who has killed I don't know how many people, live for the sake of a fight. Goku has put his desires above others countless times, so no matter how many selfless acts he does, he can not be called truly selfless.

Same, I pick Goku for a different reason though. The reason I would say Goku, is because I can relate to finding something your passionate about and wanting to test yourself and your skills because improvement is apart of the journey of life itself. You want to become a better person than you were the day before, and you won't stop until you hit that wall.. and once you do, you look back at all that happened to you and find satisfaction for the point. It's selfish in general to pursue the goal you want and leave everything else behind, but being selfish is just as important to a person as being selfless. Sure, Goku's acts were done out of selfishness, but they brought good outcomes. Why he beat Frieza isn't as important, the fact that he did was a strong message to the universe. That he wasn't invincible. Also, its a fitting perspective for a martial artist to compete with themselves. Though personally, if I we were saying what Dragonball characters we were in general, I would probably say I relae more to the Goku vs Jiren psychology as Jiren. I trust myself more than I trust others too, afterall, unlike Goku.
I pick Vegeta becuase he does things that Goku can never do. Comeback from that type background and now a god and still competing with Goku at strength. Without Vegeta Goku would be lost. Vegeta character development is way better than Goku. Second, he is way more hard working than Goku. He achieved most of the stuff on his own and sont get off guard and become naive a lot. And sometimes Goku even doubts himself. Vegeta, has became a better person. Better than Goku at times. And sometimes he did stuff Goku couldn't do. Like what he did against black and jiren. Idc what you say. Vegeta is best imo. Vegeta even trained to get god ki while Goku didn't. More hard working. And more of a relatable person.
Vegeta is more relatable to people . Goku is a double edged sword, can be good on one side but deadly on the other. He manages to put the earth and universes in danger countless times for his selfish need to fight stronger opponents. Even Piccolo was a better dad than Goku. Vegeta also is a better husband and dad. Vegeta's interaction with his family is ideal where is Goku is just a celebrity guess to his family passing through for a certain amount of time. He's not gonna stick around or be responsible at all. I'd rather be Vegeta, I fight for more than self improvement and to get better. I have my pride and can be selfish. I know I'm not perfect but that's what makes me great. I'd rather not choose between them, and instead have a little of both. I personally think Vegeta's humanity and Goku's lust to better himself come hand in hand. In fact, as people, we need to be like both of them. We need to be human like Vegeta so we can care for our friends and relatives, and we also need to have a want to better ourselves at what we do like Goku, constantly improving our skills for future use. Of course, I didn't say that it'll be easy to become both, but we can always try our best to become both right?
Goku cares about his friends and family when they die, but not when they are alive. He seems to be socially unaware and in fact more alien than Vegeta is. Maybe it's the fact that Vegeta was royalty so he was being primed to have a family while for Goku he never had much family and lived alone in the woods for most of his childhood.
I would be Goku. When you put Goku and Vegeta in a vacuum with no circumstances, Goku remains relatively the same whereas Vegeta character would change. It's not that they wouldn't grow overall but it's the person that we would be. Now put all of the story and circumstances back, Goku remains unbothered by the world around him whereas Vegeta is literally striving to be what Goku is. I think alot of people relate to Vegeta because there is a relatable story arc and change that we recognize in ourselves. Hes the most human having to struggle with recognizing the he might not be enough. On the other hand, Goku doesnt have that weight in his character. If we were given the chance to live life totally surrendered to our personal goals and purpose and not worry about the stuff that would get in the way, would it we take it? That doesnt mean we disregard or family and friends, but include them in our ride. Vegeta wants to be weightless like Goku but cant because he holds onto saiyan pride and goals and the like. Goku is weightless because he enjoys his life as it is. I'd rather be Goku.

He served his son up on a platter and because he is such a shitty father(which he should never have been since he knows he doesn't give a shit) he didn't realize Gohan doesn't like to fight... The only theme Gohan had to that point. Goku isn't some zen character. He is selfish and super careless. While I understand your argument in favor of Goku, I can't agree with it. I could never ignore the fact that I have responsibilities and people that depend on me to pursue my personal goals. Goku is so 'weightless' because he doesn't give a second thought to his responsibilities, and most of the time doesn't even acknowledge them. Goku's only real cares in life are fighting and getting stronger. Even if he does care about them, he still puts that above his family.

I love this video! I actually have/had a pretty similar rivalry in my own life from Vegeta’s perspective. Once I was a better player in sports than this friend of mine, but all of sudden I couldn’t keep up with him and he became better and better. In every practice after that I had Vegeta’s mindset to surpass my rival, even though my rival like Goku, didn’t really think the same way. I also got my chance to beat him again but I failed and since then my drive hasn’t been quite the same. So I’ve had the shock Vegeta had in the Saiyan Arc, the immense practice part from the Android Arc, my last chance like Majin Vegeta vs Goku and now I’m like Vegeta in Super when I kinda still want to beat him but it’s not the same anymore. Vegeta has always been my favourite character because he has been so relatable. Though I feel like Goku’s attitude would be a perfect model for any athlete out there.

Everytime that goku gets mad and becomes more powerful it’s because he wants to protect his loved ones. Take the fight with beerus for example when he falls down to earth he thinks about his wife,kids,family,friends and realizes that if he loses everyone dies. JeanFranco Cholidis I understand, BUT Akira Toryama said that goku just wanted to fight strong opponents and was changed to be more , Heroic and likable. Goku is more or less a selfish fighter who endangers everyone because he wants to be stronger. Vegeta is much more complex and has lots of emotional moments and is very deep. Goku is also a complex character, but Vegeta has such an empathetic quality and is very human. Majinn Vegeta is probably the most viewable part.

The moment I saw the 'My Bulma' scene in Super, I already knew I was a Vegeta>Goku kinda girl. I can not only relate to that sense of protectiveness, I actually admire it, as I've grown up with many people trying to shelter me but few ever trying to protect me from harm. When I grew up and moved out, I developed a strong sense of protectiveness for people I care about, so they'd never have to feel what I felt, having to face every fight on their own. So if someone I cared about was struck by even a God of Destruction, I don't doubt my response would be just as furious as Vegeta, because I live for my friends, family, my loved ones. Just like Vegeta does.
I also thought his social anxiety in that one scene where he was lost in that crowd and couldn't find Bulma and Trunks was really relatable and human too.

Both Goku and Vegeta are insanely popular, even amongst the Dragon Ball fandom itself. Vegeta, however, seems to be the most popular. (Gohan might be more popular than him, but I doubt it.) Knowing this, I’m going to feel really basic for saying this, but I’ve always felt a connection to Vegeta through his struggles to get stronger in spite of his constant humiliation. Over and over he loses, never able to achieve a satisfying victory over anyone substantial practically ever. His few shining moments and his own unbreakable will are all that drives him.
He doesn't always lose remember he has never actually lost a fight against Goku and did win the first one. Not counting super haven't finished it so can't say anything there

I also really don’t count him beating Goku as a win, since the fight was interrupted by Gohan and Krillin, and by the end of it Krillin could’ve just killed him had Goku not stopped him.

Vegeta. Specifically Dragon Ball Super Vegeta. Pre-Dragon Ball Super Vegeta was basically an insecure loser that kept getting shafted by the plot. In Dragon Ball Super he was still getting shafted by the plot every now and then, but he was an intelligent, stoic badass.

Just cause he admits Goku is better does not mean he stops training to be better cause he also shares Goku's want to always reach for the stars he is however is willing to put it to the back for a while, that want to always be the best is what they share, Vegeta saying he is the best is ego, he too would have wanted death if he had no challenge cause Saiyan, Goku beyond hurting his pride was the personification of something to aim for, Goku does it too for people who beat him or interest him. To be the best yet have a challenge is a goal they share and the other personifies the challenge and sometimes a goal. Nice vid. I would point out that you missed out Goku did have Vegeta as his rival. The whole way to namek his goal was to be able to fight and surpass Vegeta which was such a drive that he would repeatedly injure himself to zenkai his level higher. Again in super you neglected to mention that Goku helped at the fact Vegeta was training with Whis for 6 months and done everything in his power to get there putting aside all other responsibilities. Now Vegeta is not his only rivalbut I have to disagree respectfully with you saying Goku is not Vegeta's rival.

I would have to go with Vegeta as the better overall character. He fights to not only get better but also to protect his wife and family who he cares about deeply, even if he does not come right out and display or say it all the time. Over the course of the shows and series you see Vegeta evolve from a homicidal maniac to a loving family man who has friends he cares about, even in his once rival, Goku.
Speaking of Goku, he on the other hand has the mentality of an 8 yr old and constantly puts the world and universe in jeopardy so he can fight people, never once thinking about any of the risks or even hesitating to straight up abandon his family because they got in his way of fighting people. He never learns from his mistakes, he does not care about his family or friends, and has zero growth as a character.

Piccolo on the other hand was ostracized from all society and as such, was forced to raise himself in the wild. I remember seeing an episode where it stated that Piccolo even WANTED to join humanity, but witnessed humans slaughter each other so much that it completely blackened his heart.
Vegeta was raised to be the 'Prince of Killers'. Piccolo wasn't. He was just some little green dude lost in the wilderness that saw countless atrocities and found a way to live through it.

As someone who always had one goal and had it taken away from me, shattering my own mental health for years, along with realizing how much it affected me. I always grew up relating more to Vegeta. It's rough, and finding a new goal for myself has been heavy, but if there's one character that I can truly find inspiration in to keep going, it's Vegeta. Similar to that question from Skyrim's best dragon. "Is it better to be born good, or overcome your evil nature through great effort?" Vegeta was never perfect, he was horribly evil for a long time, and I'd never excuse that truth. But while Vegeta still is "second best" (though I guess with the end of Super, that's debatable now) he's still the most human, natural and relatable character in all of Dragonball to me. Which is why he'll always be my favorite character in any media.

There is a major detail you forgot in your video.
You forgot that according to Vegeta himself in Z and Toriyama in the Daizenshuu, ALL full blooded saiyans have a natural urge and desire to keep getting stronger and fight strong foes. (It was never just a Goku thing).
That's why Vegeta let's Cell reach his Perfect Form and why he didn't stop training after the Cell Games after Goku and Cell died and Gohan quit fighting. Vegeta was already the strongest person alive during the 7 year gap yet he kept on training.

I'd rather be a Goku. It sounds less stressful, and you can't deny that Goku has a positive effect on those around him. There's a reason Chichi still loves him after all this time. There's a reason why an assassin like Hit started thinking more like a martial artist after fighting Goku. There's a reason Goku's enemies inevitably learn to respect him and most of them become his friends. Goku possess's a childlike innocence that never harshens. He is always entertained by everything he does because much like a child everything feels new and exciting to him, but fighting is still his passion. Goku may not be a family man, but he does his best considering his lack of intelligence and self control. And self control is integral to Goku's character because he doesn't fight to defeat his enemy, he fights to defeat himself, to gain mastery over himself. In Goku's eyes he never has perfect self control because he will never fully master himself, and this is reflected in his actual personality traits and actions. He leaves his family behind to train because sometimes he just can't help himself anymore, he has a limit to how long he can go ignoring his desire to get stronger.
That makes him unstable and it isn't an excuse. If you can't raise children then don't have them. He has a choice he just chooses wrong. He is a talented fighter but as a person and a father and a husband he is shit.
It's like when people say they are addicted to drugs and can't quit and "it's a sickness" and "I don't have a choice"...... Well, you chose to start using and knew the implications. Goku won in an epic beam struggle, blasting Vegeta... only to upper clouds where he sat and angsted about his wounded ego and decided a Trump Card was the best going forward strategy. In reality, if Vegeta had just returned to continue the fight and not wasted his energy on a fake moon, Gohan and Krillin never would have noticed the orb in the sky and turn back to assist. Growing up I had a relationship with a friend where I was the Vegeta to his Goku. Learning to want to and actually forge my own path was a big step into adulthood for me back then. So I've always been a Vegeta guy.

When I was a little kid, I was all over the place for Goku, he is simple, strong and loveable. When I was a teenager for some reason I started to like Gohan more, maybe because he was around the same age as me, or because he loved studying more than fighting, but he still showed some badass stuff, who knows. As I got older and older, eventually turning into an adult, I started to see Vegeta in a better light. I started to understand his reasons and be one with them. I liked the fact that he gets the job done, when someone needs to be obliterated call Vegeta, because Goku would let anyone go, as we seen it before. DBS has put a lot of change on the characters, I think Vegeta starting from DBZ slowly turned better and better. He went through a journey, which wasn't easy or pleasant, but by the end DBS he grew up, just as I did while I was watching him.
So in short, Vegeta is my favourite, both him and I needed to grow up in order for me to like him.

He has many friends that loves him more than he loves himself and has a smile on his face 90% of the time.
Vegeta’s flaw is not being willing to show the same mercy he was given but I agree Goku can be too forgiving. It could easily wind up biting you in real life.

In life, you have to two kinds of people. People who lead, and people who follow. Goku and Vegeta represents both of these mediums. Goku personifies security, maturity, & selflessness. He trains to better himself, thus allowing other people to measure up to him, and not the other way around.
We all should strive to be like Goku, but realistically, a lot of us are more like Vegeta, hence why fans adore him. Always fighting, working hard, and determined to achieve a certain goal. That 'struggle' per say is what the character is built upon. He's not as 'boring' as Goku.

There is one problem with your criticism of Vegeta. He wouldn’t stop training and getting stronger, ever. Not even if he were the “strongest in the universe “. Goku was a #goal, but not his only goal. He continued to train after Cell and Goku died, even though he said “I’ll never fight again.”
What kind of warrior continues to train when they don’t plan to fight again? The kind that value training, getting stronger, and pushing their limits. I.e. A real warrior. He said he wouldn’t fight again, because to him, there would be no one else worth fighting after Goku/Kakkarot.

He didn't "know" Goku would come back at all. As a matter of fact, they specifically said this after the fight. Goku didn't want to be resurrected, as his presence seemed to draw more enemies to Earth.
The point is, Vegeta continued to train because he is a warrior. Getting to fight and test himself against Goku during the Buu resurrection was a bonus for him. He trains because he is a warrior, and warriors stay ready. Vegeta even made it a point to tell this to Gohan during the "Gohan goes to high school" story line.
For me personally VEGETA is one of my idols, he will always be my favorite DB character. To point out, Goku showed compassion for Vegeta when him and his buddies first encountered him they could have finished him off but decided to spare him and give him a chance. Without that we wouldn't have been able to see Vegeta grow into the person he is today, so I will always respect goku.

The thing is, Goku has that whole "So you would be stronger if I don't fight you now?" thing and the fighting for the sake of fighting thing. Both of which can put people in danger inadvertently.
If it came down to training, I would be Vegeta, since I always pushed my body to the limit (fractured some bones, and have gone too far with the bench pressing, resulting in it falling onto my ribs though they didn't break).

Chichi may be (from the perspective of we readers) the result of Toriyama being no good at writing romance (or women) and needing the help of his team to make Bulma and Vegeta's relationship work, but in universe we can also say that Chichi would have less reason to be such a helicopter mother if Goku put in half the effort to be a good husband and father that Vegeta does.
Certainly Vegeta is gruff, and he doesn't show affection readily, but from the rage he showed during the Cell saga when Future Trunks was killed, to being willing to tackle Beerus, the God of Destruction who Vegeta himself was terrified of, when Beerus struck Bulma, we know he cares. Caring that he himself tried to resist back in the Buu saga, only to then sacrifice himself trying to destroy Buu and save everyone he loved.
When you think about it, he's also the character whose had the most development over the multiple series.
Goku is, at heart, the same food loving boy he was when we met him in Dragon Ball. He meets Bulma, trains with Master Roshi, fights the Red Ribbon Army and King Piccolo, but he really doesn't change. He still likes to eat, and is continually looking for someone stronger than himself to test his might against.
Vegeta meanwhile we first meet as an antagonist who blows up planets and kills his allies on a whim. He gets beaten down, seeks revenge, gets killed by Frieza, weeps as he pleads for Goku to avenge their people. He meets Bulma, starts to care about her and their child, sees the man his son will grow into and even expresses his pride in him (in his usual understated way). He tries to revert, thinking it would make him strong enough to match Goku, but realizes he can't go back, exhibits self sacrifice, and then heroism as he holds off Kid Buu long enough for Goku to make a Super Spirit Bomb.
Now he's a trusted and loyal friend who might not wear his heart on his sleeve, but you know he always has his friends' backs.
Honestly, his fight against Toppo, despite how silly Toppo acted, goes to show how far Vegeta has come.

Goku’s mentality to love the process of training and seek the joy and fulfillment of growing stronger instead of focusing on the success that it garners is why he always attains it in such larger quantities that Vegeta ever does. Goku has the right mindset: do the right things for the sake of them and success is a byproduct. Vegeta has the opposite: suffer through these means and they’ll give you the end goal you keep staring at. This key difference always makes me respect Goku more, he has the integrity and internal confidence to be concerned about self-improvement
Same, I pick Goku for a different reason though. The reason I would say Goku, is because I can relate to finding something your passionate about and wanting to test yourself and your skills because improvement is apart of the journey of life itself. You want to become a better person than you were the day before, and you won't stop until you hit that wall.. and once you do, you look back at all that happened to you and find satisfaction for the point. It's selfish in general to pursue the goal you want and leave everything else behind, but being selfish is just as important to a person as being selfless. Sure, Goku's acts were done out of selfishness, but they brought good outcomes. Why he beat Frieza isn't as important, the fact that he did was a strong message to the universe. That he wasn't invincible.
Also, its a fitting perspective for a martial artist to compete with themselves. Though personally, if I we were saying what Dragonball characters we were in general, I would probably say I relae more to the Goku vs Jiren psychology as Jiren. I trust myself more than I trust others too, afterall, unlike Goku.
I pick Vegeta becuase he does things that Goku can never do. Comeback from that type background and now a god and still competing with Goku at strength. Without Vegeta Goku would be lost. I'd rather not choose between them, and instead have a little of both. I personally think Vegeta's humanity and Goku's lust to better himself come hand in hand. In fact, as people, we need to be like both of them. We need to be human like Vegeta so we can care for our friends and relatives, and we also need to have a want to better ourselves at what we do like Goku, constantly improving our skills for future use. Of course, I didn't say that it'll be easy to become both, but we can always try our best to become both right?

Goku cares about his friends and family when they die, but not when they are alive. He seems to be socially unaware and in fact more alien than Vegeta is. Maybe it's the fact that Vegeta was royalty so he was being primed to have a family while for Goku he never had much family and lived alone in the woods for most of his childhood.

When you put Goku and Vegeta in a vacuum with no circumstances, Goku remains relatively the same whereas Vegeta character would change. It's not that they wouldn't grow overall but it's the person that we would be. Now put all of the story and circumstances back, Goku remains unbothered by the world around him whereas Vegeta is literally striving to be what Goku is.
I think alot of people relate to Vegeta because there is a relatable story arc and change that we recognize in ourselves. Hes the most human having to struggle with recognizing the he might not be enough. On the other hand, Goku doesnt have that weight in his character. If we were given the chance to live life totally surrendered to our personal goals and purpose and not worry about the stuff that would get in the way, would it we take it? That doesnt mean we disregard or family and friends, but include them in our ride. Vegeta wants to be weightless like Goku but cant because he holds onto saiyan pride and goals and the like. Goku is weightless because he enjoys his life as it is.

I actually have/had a pretty similar rivalry in my own life from Vegeta’s perspective. Once I was a better player in sports than this friend of mine, but all of sudden I couldn’t keep up with him and he became better and better. In every practice after that I had Vegeta’s mindset to surpass my rival, even though my rival like Goku, didn’t really think the same way. I also got my chance to beat him again but I failed and since then my drive hasn’t been quite the same.
So I’ve had the shock Vegeta had in the Saiyan Arc, the immense practice part from the Android Arc, my last chance like Majin Vegeta vs Goku and now I’m like Vegeta in Super when I kinda still want to beat him but it’s not the same anymore.
Vegeta has always been my favourite character because he has been so relatable. Though I feel like Goku’s attitude would be a perfect model for any athlete out there.

Goku is also a complex character, but Vegeta has such an empathetic quality and is very human. Majinn Vegeta is probably the most viewable part.

The moment I saw the 'My Bulma' scene in Super, I already knew I was a Vegeta>Goku kinda girl.
I can not only relate to that sense of protectiveness, I actually admire it, as I've grown up with many people trying to shelter me but few ever trying to protect me from harm. When I grew up and moved out, I developed a strong sense of protectiveness for people I care about, so they'd never have to feel what I felt, having to face every fight on their own.
So if someone I cared about was struck by even a God of Destruction, I don't doubt my response would be just as furious as Vegeta, because I live for my friends, family, my loved ones.

Both Goku and Vegeta are insanely popular, even amongst the Dragon Ball fandom itself. Vegeta, however, seems to be the most popular. (Gohan might be more popular than him, but I doubt it.) Knowing this, I’m going to feel really basic for saying this, but I’ve always felt a connection to Vegeta through his struggles to get stronger in spite of his constant humiliation. Over and over he loses, never able to achieve a satisfying victory over anyone substantial practically ever. His few shining moments and his own unbreakable will are all that drives him.

I would point out that you missed out Goku did have Vegeta as his rival. The whole way to namek his goal was to be able to fight and surpass Vegeta which was such a drive that he would repeatedly injure himself to zenkai his level higher.
Again in super you neglected to mention that Goku helped at the fact Vegeta was training with Whis for 6 months and done everything in his power to get there putting aside all other responsibilities. Remember in the cell saga gohan was the first super saiyan 2 and in the buu saga he was the only one that could match majin buu just to be eating by him then he just became a scholar and stopped fighting then in the tournament of power he didn’t do that much am I the only one that thinks that gohan had the biggest potential in dragon ball
