I flew my drone in Detroit it's on my channel if you want to see haha, won't be going back, the day I was there 3 people were killed within 10 miles of me I found out later that evening. Never been anywhere quite like it. Would love to visit Chernobyl. Some people enjoy visiting run down buildings, I prefer entirely abandoned areas like the part of Detroit I went to

John Baily Yes, that is the red forest. Yes, people have killed boars from such for research purposes. Yet, the boars as put by Jermy Waid's guide, are rare. Even then, the boars are radioactive as shit and can more than kill an average person without trying.

I thought it was gunna be about hunting radioactive animals then i thought it was going to be about the chernobyl incident itself but it turned out to be some drunk people firing rounds into the woods. I don't even think there were any boars. They would have filmed them if they were there.

The scientists knew the design of their RBMK reactor very well, they were aware of the risks, it all came down to a balancing act between cost and safety.
What caused the accident at the end was the negligent safety culture and the inherent unsafe design combined.
- The exact composition of the control rods and the increased reactivity caused by inserting them into the core was kept from the engineers operating the plant.
The Chief designer of the RBMK reactor knew that this could be an issue, because the reactivity was noticed in another RBMK reactor plant before, but nothing was done to remedy it. There was a widespread view that the conditions under which the positive scram effect would be important would never occur.
- The authors who wrote the test procedure had no knowledge of the positive SCRAM issue, furthermore it was allowed to disable key safety equipment if it was according to procedure.
- The safety test was supposed to only affect the electrical side and therefore did not need approval from the the chief design authority but it required disabling certain safety equipment from the reactor itself, which normally would require approval.
- Due to the conditions of the reactor at the time, it was not possible to do the safety test according to procedure, so they took the more inexperienced night shift and forced them to do it anyway, manually by disabling almost all safety features. The computer system designed to monitor the plant could not be used because it was never designed to operate in these conditions.

This was one of the first things they ever done. It's from 2006 so let's just say the standards have improved quite a bit.
This is how I see it. The boss got drunk and just finished playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and wanted to make this video. He told his employees to come hunting with him and of course agree because he's the boss. Then they go on this completely unprofessional completely pointless "hunt" and the boss uploaded the video as if it was a VICE video because, you know, he's drunk...
This would all make sense but it's 3 years later and the video is still up. You dun goofed VICE.

Absolutely nothing happened here.... roll some stock footage from tons of other greater chernobyl documentaries, and a jeff bridges wannabe telling us how it's heavy shit. Oh and hunting the radioactive beasts of chernobyl? They fired a couple of shots at some boars at the very end with "machine guns"... they missed. I'm not normally one to criticise youtube videos, but this was RUBBISH.

I just came here after watching the North Korean workers in Russia special, and I've determined Vice mostly seems to be Shane Smith wandering around the world while incredibly drunk and meeting interesting characters and seeing interesting sights. Genuinely love it.

This was weak. The real story is that most of the animals are doing very well. People taking their habitat are more destructive that radiation. Things couldn't be much better for the animals now that the people are gone.

This deserves a place in The Great Hall of the Stupidest Things Ever Said By A Human Being. The technology and the physics principals behind nuclear power generation are understood perfectly. They were understood then and they are still understood today. What he should have said is, "This is what happens when you put bureaucrats and uneducated people in charge of things THEY don't understand". The Chernobyl disaster happened because inexperienced workers were entrusted with performing a dangerous experiment on a live nuclear reactor by a bunch of brainless government suits. Fukushima happened because, even though they'd been warned that the plant was vulnerable to tsunami, the corporation in charge didn't think it was worth spending the money to fix it. The problem with nuclear power isn't the science or the technology. The problem is human/government/corporate ignorance and greed.

Its was an experiment,that went very bad,after the explosion the magma,over 5000 celsius heat,melted thro ground,if would have touched water,it would have caused second explosion,far greater then first,if that would have taken place,Europe would be unhabittable.luckily they removed water from there,before it got it

I like VICE, and I love VICE News, but this was not a strong video. It was just two people getting drunk walking around Chernobyl and not much was actually explained. If this wasn't supposed to be an enlightening channel then it would be fine, just two people having a good time, who doesn't want to get drunk and walk around Chernobyl? But while doing a story is unprofessional, the fact VICE's Co-Founder was one of them as well makes it even worse.

as for the drinking thing, as far as i can tell the only benefit is that you pass water more quickly, which is definitely helpful but A) will not save you from long-term exposure and B) does not require that you drink yourself stupid. workers in chernobyl were told to drink a half glass of vodka every 2 hours (a russian vodka glass is like 2-3 oz, so you might get a nice lil' buzz but that's about it)
