Here's background info The reason everyone can't see colors is because colore portray feelings and put us in certain moods. For exanple, red gives us an angry mood. So the community elders wiped out all colors because moods and feelings can start disagreements, death, wars, etc.
The reason he left from the lesson when his friend died is because that in his world they don't do that and btw it wasn't a memory of a man dying not was a memory of a baby dying and he felt feelings and they do not normally feel feelings

The people cant see/ feel but only the giver because he has all the memories he gives to jonas and he wants to change the community to have love. He makes it and the community changes
