Better Than An Instant Pot? - Cooking Pulled Pork In An Electric Pressure Cooker

  • Electric pressure cookers are fantastic and a must have. The Instant Pot is probably the most recognizable electric pressure cooker on the market today but is there a better model out there? Today I am showing off my Carey DPC-9SS Smart Canner and Pressure Cooker.
This pressure cooker does pretty much everything a normal pressure cooker can do but also has the added ability to be used as a canner. In my book that makes it a better choice than the Instant Pot.

I just bought one a month ago. Rose Red Homestead did a series of tests on an instapot max, a regular stovetop presto canner, a presto digital canner, and the Nesco/Carey/Chard..(all the same thing). She canned both pints and quarts of several different foods in each of the models tested, using a device put into the center, that measures the temperatures obtained and how long they maintain it, ie: how long the food temp remains in the botulism “kill zone”. All but the Presto digital canner passed.

I have a Nesco and it's great, I can Salmon so I don't fill my freezer anymore (caught about 30 COHO salmon this year), just 2 hours in the smoker, then into 10 1/2 pint jars and run the program. Best part is I run it outside on my patio so all that vented fish smell doesn't fill my kitchen/house. It shuts itself off, I just go out in the morning and it's cooled down.

I have the Carey (Chard) canner & a 3qt InstaNT Pot, a 6qt InstaNT Pot & an 8qt InstaNT Pot. It’s great. I can sterilize my mason jars in one Instant pot & can the food in my Carey. I know the Carey can do all the cooking but I do like cooking in the stainless steel pot of the Instant pot. Also, I don’t want to wear out my Carey as I love it as much as the IP. I worry about the Carey staying on the market. It’s not as well known. I’m actually considering buying a 2nd Carey just in case my current one breaks, I’ll want to replace it. It’s great to can with because you don’t have to be tethered to it while it cans.

Wow, you have quite the mix. I can't imagine having to store them all. :) I love my Carey canner as well. Not having to babysit it is the best part for sure.

The Carey got bought out by Nesco, but it is also still available as a Carey AND as a Nesco smart canner. The machine, itself, is identical, with no difference in it except for the name on it.

I love mine too. I might make some more videos using it. I use it quite a bit to cook rabbit.

Thanks for the video. I believe you made a mistake! When you set the cooker for pressure cooking, you hit the correct button "Pressure Cook". THEN, you said "oh it needs to be High pressure..." and pushed the High button. That was the mistake. By doing that, you took it off Pressure Cooking mode, and were unknowingly using it in the High Pressure Canning mode. I think you still got a good result, but you may want to look at the directions again (Pressure Cooking, page 3 of the instruction booklet) and follow them closely.

I noticed that too. I turned it back on pressure cooking mode but must not have gotten that part in the video. Thanks for the suggestions.

So do you know if the pressure cooking functions on the Carey uses the same time basis as using manual pressure cook on an instant pot? Im considering this machine or an instant pot max. I currently have an instant pot viva, but i never use the preset buttons. My instant pot is my main way of cooking accompanied by a ninja foodie oven as I live in a tiny home on wheels . I was going for the instant pot max as its what I know, but wanted to gwt into canning low acid foods. Now seing that the Carey/Nesco can be used as regular pressure cooker acompanied by the lower price tag, I'm considering it.

I bought a traditional stove top pressure cooker a while back. I've been rather pleased with that. Make lots of meat pie fillings with it.

I love my stovetop pressure cooker too. I rarely use it for cooking anymore because the electric one is just so much easier but I still use it for canning when I am canning large batches.

And you can put the steam rack in it, add water and a stainless bowl inside and cook lasagne and other things in the stainless vessel also...@@Slightlyrednecked
