In 1978 he became a sambhag pracharak (regional organiser) overseeing Vadodara and Surat. In 1985 RSS assigned him to the BJP. In 1987 he organised the BJP’s electoral victory in the Ahmedabad municipal elections due to which he was elected as the organising secretary of the BJP’s Gujarat unit. In 1990 he was made a member of the National Election Committee of the BJP and helped in organising the Ram Rath Yatra and Murli Manohar Joshi’s 1991-92 Ekta Yatra (Journey for Unity). BJP won the 1995 Gujarat state assembly elections with 121/182 seats with him as the Organising secretary, they won again in 1998 even though a senior BJP leader in Gujarat (Vaghela) had defected to congress. After this Modi was promoted as the National General Secretary (Organisation). Now due the Gujarat CM’s failing health and his bad handling of the 2001 Bhuj Earthquake plus accusations of corruption Modi was sought as his replacement but Advani had doubts regarding his political inexperience and offered to instead make him the Deputy CM which Modi refused telling Advani and Vajpayee that he was “going to be fully responsible for Gujarat or not at all”. On 3rd October, 2001 Modi replaced Patel as the Chief Minister of Gujarat plus assuming the responsibility of the next state assembly election in August of 2003. He defeated Ashwin Mehta of INC in a by-election from Rajkot to enter the Gujarat State Legislature. Riots happened in 2002 he resigned after NDA members DMK and TDP along with others demanded his resignation due to the riots, re-elections occurred with Vaghela as INC’s CM candidate. Modi sent a letter of resignation to the BJP which was rejected and he contested the re-election in Gujarat as the CM candidate in December of 2002, BJP won 127/182 seats i.e. a 2/3 majority (winning more seats than they had before the snap elections). During his second term he shifted from the hindutva focus to development model. He curtailed the influence of Sangh Parivar organisations such as when the Bhartiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) staged a farmer’s demonstration he ordered the eviction of BKS from state provided houses, he ordered the demolition of 200 illegally built temples in Gandhinagar which deepened the rift with VHP (Vishwa Hindu Parishad). Vajpayee blamed his defeat in 2004 on Modi stating “it was a mistake to leave him in office after the riots” as he believed this sidelined the North Indian Muslim voter base, the US state department banned his entry into the United States, the UK and the European Union also denied his entry due his perceived complicity in the Riots. He won again in 2007 with 117/182 seats and completed 2,063 consecutive days as chief minister of Gujarat, making him the longest-serving holder of that post. He won again in 2012 with 115/182 seats marking his fourth consecutive term as Gujarat’s CM. In 2014 he was elected as the Prime Minister of India, USA, UK and the EU immediately lifted his ban and the he was invited to the White House for dinner with the President. Now please, kindly do tell what is the experience of Rahul Gandhi in the field of politics that he should be made the Prime Minister of this country other than losing his family’s fortress constituency of Amethi where INC has won 13 times!! (81%) since independence to a TV serial actress and then running away to contest elections from a state whose language he can’t even speak? (Wayanad, Kerala).
