It was a big privilage to go to the state schools, Teferi Mekonen, Menen, ቀጏስ etc a number of high calibre people came out of the State schools The International schools were opened for expats who were in the diplomatic mission, Ethiopians joined later. During Hsileselassie time there were a lot of foreigners living in Ethiopia eg. Indians (Indian community school) Italians (Italian School) Germans (German community school) French (Lyce) Greek ( Greek Community School)Armenians etc The schools were very affordable and in most cases especialy Lyce it was subsidised by the French government and also offered scholarships..for higher education.

They are diplomats or work for different embassies in Ethiopia. This international schools are not meant for Ethiopians but for youths how come to Ethiopia because their parents are here to work. They schools are also expensive they don’t want any and everybody to attend their.

ለኔ አሁንም አንደኛ ት/ቤት ነው በዋጋ አልተምነውም
it is not the most noble and prestigious schools that make you genius and scientist it is the challenges, inconveniences and lot of problems that you encounter in life. The scientists that we are taught about in relation to some discoveries or inventions in the school were the result of challenges, inconveniences and difficulties in their life time but not because of such prestigious schools. It is all about CLASS.
In my observation if you take ics for example the prohibitive nature and cost means only very wealthy families can send their children there. But the irony is that although their parents are hoping for the best education their hard earned money can buy the children are being deprived from a holistic educational experience I.e. they are being prepared for a life aboard because their understanding of the country they live in and the natural environment is very limited. They are therefore mostly left in the limbo not fully Ethiopian in essence but also not fully American. However their is a small minority who gain access through scholarships and come from other schools with broader educational experience including the national curriculum. These small percentage, very high achievers are given the chance to pursue higher education in America once they complete high school. Some end up being an asset to Ethiopia but most melt away therefore not sure on balance of probability these schools especially the likes of ICS contribute to education in Ethiopia or damn down bright students from other schools and make them redundant from the nation all together.
Motivation? ይሔ እንዴት ነው ማነቃቂያ የሚሆነው? ፊደል ያስቆጠሩን የኔታስ? ብር ልንተምንበት የማንችለውን እውቀት የለገሱትስ?.

Lycée used to be pretty affordable they used to charge 300birr per term, Sandford was 450 birr per term ICS had always been expensive but they gave scholarships to Ethiopian kids both in Ethiopua and in th US as well. And most of the graduates have good jobs earning more than what they paid in all fields although I must say not always in Ethiopia.Mostly in the USA.

I went to Sandford in the 80's & 90's, from kindergarten all the way to Graduation.
I remember my parents paying around 2,500~ 3,000 per year.
And towards the end they jacked up the price to 11,000 per year.
I remember a lot of students withdrew because of that!.

I traveled many countries. I learned long time ago that Ethiopia is perhaps the only country that treats foreigners as first class citizens and her native people as secondary citizens. This is all done under the pretext of extending hospitality to guests.
