One of the best jazz concerts I have ever seen was in Lincoln Center in 1973. The first set was oregon , the second set was Keith Jarrett, and last set was Monk's last concert. Oregon blew me away with Collin Walcott. Keith Jarrett pinned me to the seat with a n incredible set with Haden, motian and Redman.
What can I say about Oregon...I have been listenting to them since late 70's and they have been one of my best bands of all time. I saw them live in Athens in the mid 80's and that was one of my best expiriences I ever had.
Love Oregon. I saw/heard them live in a concert at Northwestern Univ. in a room with just perfect acoustics. It was transcendent. This was about a year after Colin Walcott's death and his absence was still being felt.I wish I could have seen them when he was still alive. But Trilok Gurtu was also excellent.
Extraordinary ! Never dreamed such images existed at all ! I was lucky to see Oregon (with Mark Walker on percussions) in Wittlich (Germany) last week, a fantastic concert. I also saw them with Colin Walcott playing this song in Basel, Switzerland, in 1980...
GREAT! thank you for uploading - one of my favourite bands for decades now, saw them a few weeks ago in concert in Tübingen Germany... - very fine concert short time before a new CD-release, they were in great shape :-) - these musicians should live 120 years :-)
I just saw Paul Mccandless in concert this week Incredible show and it was nice to be sitting on the front table. Brilliant musician!! First time I saw Oregon was in 1973 at Lincoln center 1. oregon 2.Keith jarrett 3. Thelonious Monk
Fantastic document...! is there more? Saw Oregon for the first time in Huntington Beach sometime in the late ’70s, perhaps ’76, at the Golden Bear, a long gone club that hosted its share of fringe music. That concert is still a vivid memory all these years later. Thank you for this!
Re the OP's "first recorded in 1989" - first recording with Oregon, yes. But Ralph recorded it at least twice before then. He and vibist Gary Burton performed it on their duet album "Slide Show" from 1986. And the year before this video's live performance with Oregon, he released what I still feel is the definitive version, on his album "Old Friends, New Friends." In that version, there's a beautiful intro section performed by cellist David Darling and bassist Eddie Gomez, followed by the main body of the song with the two of them underpinning the guitar riff while Ralph performs a very moving solo on 12-string.
haha you corrected me twice; 4 years ago and now again 2 months ago. Someone is wrong on the internet!!! You're right, of course, and since ECM started streaming I don't have to go the cellar and dig out the old vinyl... the intro on old friends new friends is really cool... cheers
@HuLiXD I agree it changed, but I think if you listen to his last recordings w/the group, their sound was beginning to change, too (how could it not, after that many years?). Songs like Pepé Linque on "Crossing" were already hinting at a more straight-ahead feel. That said, I've been listening to a lot of the older stuff lately and really do miss things like the sitar/12-string playing together. I'm starting to like the recent material more, too, but I'll always be sentimental for Walcott.

My friends drove 300 miles on the spur of the moment to try and get into that show. No luck.

Before "45th parallel" it was recorded as a duet with Gary Burton, in may 1985.
