We had clouds in Houston, but my dad called me just before totality since he had clear skies at his house 100 miles south of Dallas. I got to listen to his excitement over the phone and that was the best present ever for him. I already saw the 2017 eclipse when we drove 700 miles to Hopkinsville KY. Now it was his turn

Very helpful video. I must admit that I prefer the results of the two leading, simpler methods as the last image, while fun, doesn't look anything like the eclipse that so mesmerized and moved us in the moment. I love the images that just slightly enhance what we saw and don't look like a painting. Will be using those suggested sliders!

I went to the Adirondack mountains, had a perfect place with clear views of the southern sky, but clouds started rolling in a fee minutes before it started, was still able to get some good images as the clouds over all were thin and wispy most of the time, but the haze cause bloom and some detail loss, but my total eclipse images look like something out of a scifi movie because of how the clouds in the twilight sky made the corona and bloom look. wasnt able to get good corona images but i accidentally got beads and diamond ring while shooting like crazy and adjusting exposure, though lower resolution at 300 mm, i also got a few solar flares which i love and the progression of photos you can see it growing and looping. my biggest success though was my other camera project and why i went up in the mountains. timelapse of the moons shadow. because the clouds were uniform mostly and thin enough, i actually got the shadow from the underside of the clouds as it passed over which was way better than i had planned because the clouds are flat and the ground wasnt.
the biggest thing i was surprised with was how quickly the sky darkend and how quick it lightened back up after at totality. its amazing how little sun needs to show to get a large amount of light.
i enjoyed this experience very much and if i am able to do it again, im going to have a larger lens and a motorized mount, i want high quality images of the edge activity as i find it most interesting and dynamic

The entire process of centering and radial blurring was an opportunity to explain things a bit more. The radial blur would not work at all unless the image was centered since the layer gets rotated around the central point. This would have tied the entire explanation together and made the process more cohesive. Perhaps. But what do I know, lol ! Thanks man ! Keep up the awesome work !

Great tutorial, thank you. This all works great "IF" you can get a perfect stacked alignment of the moon between shots. Even though I didn't change my focal length, or touched my focus (manual) from the start of C1, the edges never seem to match up enough to be as sharp as what you showed from yours. Perhaps limitations of equipment used (Sony A1 + 200-600 @f11)? It's close, but when stacking, it's causing issues on the edges that look bad when the "mean" is applied. I also noticed that if the centering of the moon isn't perfect for the radial blur, it also will cause an issue with the edges, but easier to correct by using a mask over the moon.

Excellent tutorial. Thank you!! I’m ready to start editing my corona files. Can you briefly explain why you did not do auto alignment? One thing I want to do is process the detailed corona, but then I want the prominences layered on top. I am not sure if I will have to mask the prominences, which will be difficult, since there is not a solid line between the prominences and the background ( I’ll choose a black background for the prominence image ). I may be able to make the black color transparent, but I doubt the edges will be clean enough to prevent ringing. I am very comfortable with Lightroom, but a Photoshop novice, at best.

Thanks for this tutorial, sinking into edit my shots now. If creating an HDR stacked image, would you still edit in Lightroom to drop blacks, up contrast, and up clarity or is that for single image editing?

Nico- I stacked a lot of images at different exposures. I have great sun rays extending out, but I am finding that I also have a very pronounced halo around the sun/moon due to the brightness of the images. How can I get rid of that but keep the exposure of the rest of everything I want to keep that is close to the sun/moon?

I got some good images of yesterday's eclipse, but some of them, especially my corona 7-shot stack, is still suffering from banding around the outside of the image. You can see the same sort of banding I'm talking about in your stacking example from this video. Is there an easy way to get rid of this banding?

Thanks Nico! That Radial Blur technique really helped my HDR of 11 images. Unfortunately I use GIMP not PS so it's a bit different. Here are the steps that worked for me:

    • @dcabernel
      @dcabernel หลายเดือนก่อน

      Duplicate Original Layer
On new layer Color → Desaturate → Desaturate (rename layer Desaturate)
      Duplicate Desaturate
On new layer Filters → Blur → Circular Motion Blur Center on Eclipse; Angle 10 Set Layer mode to Substract (rename layer Circular Blur)
      Undo Original layer visibility
Merge Layers Desaturate/Circular Blur Set mode to Soft Light
      Merge above with original layer
Adjust final layer with curves etc for desired result

There won't be any photo processing for me this time. 🙁 I was plagued by technical problems. And every single issue was my fault for not rehearsing. (I know better! I was just lazy.)
Light leak in my camera's solar filter mount gave me reflections between the filter and lens.
I didn't make a shade hood for the camera's display, so I mostly saw my shirt's reflection in the display when trying to align and focus. (Mental note, next time prepare a display shade, and wear a black shirt.)
It's a newer camera to me, resulting in too much fidgeting trying to find right settings.
I was overconfident in my telescope's batteries -- they died early on, and I thought I had spares but didn't -- and it wasn't worth the effort to manually track the sun. It's a Meade ETX in alt-az mode, so manual pointing is pretty rough, especially since my battery overconfidence led me to not bother making a sun finder.
My observing location wasn't well thought out and the last half of the eclipse was behind a flowering pear tree, leading to a rapid and sloppy relocation.
    But, you know what?
None of that really mattered, because I had good company and we enjoyed it visually with plain ol' viewers and some views through the telescope, which I realigned every 10-15 minutes or so.
I was into visual astronomy years before I got into astrophotography and my brain still considers viewing to be the main objective (ha! pun intended) and pictures, when possible, as just a bonus.

For those of us who don't have Photoshop (gasp!), how does one do the blur subtract step in GIMP? Doing the azimuthal blur is straightforward, but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to subtract that from the non-blurred image including the 128 offset.

When I introduce radial blur I get a sort of cat eye effect with a deep dark cat eye in the center. If I change the radial effect up, the cat eye increases. If I change it down, the cat eye decreases but the radiant spikes also turn to burry areas.
Does anyone have a suggestion on how to correct this?

Where I live...97% eclipse, so no totality. Was going to drive to sister's place near the center of totality path, but clouds killed that idea. Clouds at my place, but not socked in like she had. So, I got some interesting pictures of an eclipse with clouds crossing the face of the sun. Of course, the thickness of the clouds varied from moment to moment. I was forced to shoot aperture priority. Worked fine until the crescent got too small, then it was manual mode and bracket.
One other point of interest. Using a Sony A9 and A7Rii. Practicing the day before with clear skies, I gotta say, Auto focus works better than manual focus. Comparing pictures by looking at the sun spots....I was never able to match what Autofocus was giving me by going manual. Yes, I know every "expert" and their brothers were preaching manual focus. I prefer to test myself. However, once the clouds rolled in on the day of the eclipse, autofocus went out the window (clouds drove it nuts). I actually found manual focus easier with the clouds then without. Not sure why. Peaking color seemed more prominent. Why is that? Beats the heck out of me. So, got both camera's well focused manually, but with all the clouds, just lucky to get something kind of sharp. Sure, I missed totality, but my plan to go 200 miles to my sister's place died and I didn't have a viable option.
