    Thanks for that informative video! I have an Arno Bernard Imamba in RWL34.

    My absolute favorites are 52100 (Best for scandi edges and hunting knives,Vanadis 4 Extra (best for general outdoors use) and M390 best for anything that doesn't include insane use of the blade. RWL34 is a very underrated steel, really good stuff!!!

      @@greekveteran2715 thank you for sharing! 🙏🏻 Still can’t get my hands on enough M390 to do some real testing.

    I want to make a chef knife and a grafting knife from this RWL 34. Would you recommend it in those applications?

      Definitely. I rarely use anything else for kitchen knives now.

    have any experience with cpn-s35vn curently my typical go to even tho seems a lil tough to get a mirrior polish... might have to try and sorce some of this rwl-34 and give it a go!

      35VN….it’s one of those type of steels that offers exceptional qualities all-around, but good lord is it hard to polish, and grind after HT. 😆. I had a 35VN crush phase.

    I'm a user not a maker. And my favourites are M4, 52100, Magnacut, and 14C28N. I've never had anything in RWL34. But I'd be interested in trying some after your endorsement of it.

      It’s worth a try at least once! CPM154 is a good backup you’ll find in more factory/mid-tech knives; and it’s characteristics are virtually identical. 🙏🏻

      My absolute favorites are 52100,Vanadis 4 Extra and M390. They all sharpen easy, take a scalpel edge and they have good edge stability. Suprisingly, I never had a chip on any M390 blade I own and I had on most steels when I used them on wood or cutting cans etc. I guess the edge bevel being convexed a bit and sharpened enough to remove any "burnt" steel (especially on facotry made knives), play more role on edge stability than steel itself.So, I always reprofile to a slight convex and only put them to hard use, after a 2-3 full sharpening sessions.

    Cpm154 and rwl34 is OK at best. As a user steel it just goes slick to Dann fast. I just won't hold its aggression . Its edge life is fine if you don't mind you steel getting slick after a little cutting.

    I love the video, but I thought Crucible, Bohler and Damasteel all use the same particle metallurgy technology, generation 3? With that in mind would magnacut be a better choice? More edge retention, more corrosion resistance, tougher. The sharpening aspect is different I guess?
    I know I probably sound like such a shill talking about MagnaCut but I am gonna get my hands on some RWL34, you make it sound like awesome

    • @calebwhiteknives
      @calebwhiteknives  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They do indeed use similar processes; and from a working standpoint the comparable steels from each manufacturer are similar. Damasteels process is a bit finer, and produces cleaner results in regards to the polish. And they’re just better at consistency these days than Crucible. Bohler - I have very little experience with. Magnacut does offer a little tougher blade than some of the others…but man, finishing it and sharpening it STINKS! 😆

    Don't you know magnacut is the best steel ever created. Just joking around. My most favorite are cruwear and k390 for different uses

    • @calebwhiteknives
      @calebwhiteknives  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      er mah gahhhh...magnacut. I've actually used this a good bit in the last year on some private projects, and for testing. Overall, it's a good steel with very tough characteristics, but working with it and finishing it absolutely sucks. Sharpening it isn't as bad as some, but worse than most. That's just my very limited experience with it though.

      @@calebwhiteknives I had a bad experience with my first magnacut blade . I don t think it was done right . The edge felt like soft crap and chunks were coming off the edge , so chippy I think is the term ? It was on a hogue but I don’t doubt hogue knows how to heat treat . I wouldn’t bs about it , it was crap for real

    • @calebwhiteknives
      @calebwhiteknives  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@Hungrybird474 That is sort of the problem with all the new uber-alloy steels coming out in the last decade or so; inconsistency in the metal making houses is leading to lack of knowledge or testing in the heat treating protocols for the product makers/sellers. Very simply - they aren't being fully tested and run through the gamut of HT/use protocols before being rushed to market as the lastest and greatest new "thing"! But hey, at least they're selling t-shirts! It's a bad practice being adopted by more than just the knife steel industry. Gun companies like Sig are notorious for this kind of "ready, fire...aim," bullcrap.

      I definitely recommend giving it a try. Not stainless ..but depending on the application, its not a bad thing. Fine grain, fine carbides. Very little grain growth during forging or heat cycling. You can go for high hardness and still have a lot of flexibility. You have probably heard of Larrin Thomas..his blogs / videos go into nice detail. Take care and thanks for your videos, have enjoyed watching you for many years!@@calebwhiteknives
