Do you know how the monk learned of the truth? I thought they all left the village at the same time (in the old version). And the reason why I've been eager to read the new version is because I thought the love story between MC and Lu Xueqi could be very heartwarming, but unfortunately it was not written to be so, at least in my opinion. I just wondered if the author made any improvements to that. I felt like he knew that he was disappointing Biyao fans at the end, so he decided not to "reward" Xueqi fans either. Just saying they looked at each and smiled is not good enough for me. 😁

He knew the chemistry between Xueqi and Gui Li hence sent her the letter. It came just in time, when her sect was setting her up with Li Xuan. Don't worry, you'll be satisfied with the new version. I only found a free online translated copy in Vietnamese, not perfect, I'm waiting for the published one. Xiao Ding cut a lot of unnecessary, complex details and scenes (of course some of Biyao to really make her a minor character) to put the focus on Xiaofan-Xueqi. There were a few small additions I noticed, such as down in the Siling Abyss, just before they got hit by a big wave caused by the black giant snake, Xiaofan grabbed Xueqi and threw her to safety, while flying in the air she looked back and saw him engulfed in the wave. Changes like this really reinforced their relationship (or her love for him before the 10 years mark, which explained why she only thought of him for a good 10 years even though he crossed to the dark side and only had another woman in his mind). The letter from the monk really kept things better connected, setting up nicely for Xueqi to later defy her sect and master on the proposed marriage. I think it could have been even better if Xueqi had apologized or at least acknowledged the wrong accusation when Gui Li came to the Bamboo Peak to ask her to run away with him. There was a lot less drama, killing, dying or conflicting. This might reflect some change in the author's outlook on life over the years from when he was mid 20 (original noval) to U50 (new version). The biggest addition was a new chapter at the end (published separately last year) where Xiaofan moved back to the Bamboo Peak (after a lot of persuading from Xueqi), becoming the cook again, chopping woods and cooking everyday for the people he loved, just as he always dreamed of during the years drifted apart. At the end of the chapter, he proposed to Xueqi, holding hands, looking in each other's eyes and smiling (good enough for ya?). It ended a lot better than the old novel, removing a lot of doubts and guesswork. I really hope the Donghua will use the new version in season 3 and 4. D

As long as this Zhang Xiaofan ends up in a happy ending with this Lu Xueqi, then I'm satisfied.

But I actually really enjoyed the novel (new version) because there were a lot of things in there that couldn't be shown or expressed well in the series such as thoughts, pain, suffering... Re the visit, she was happy because he paid attention to her and noticed the change in weight. He never publicly showed any concern like that previously, I think. In Asian culture, Vietnamese for example, making a remark on someone's weight actually shows that we care and are concerned about them, doesn't necessarily mean to be rude. By asking her to run away with him, he indirectly confessed his feelings for her, proposed and attempted to take the bride away (a 3 in 1 combo, very efficient). Xueqi was very observant so she could read things like this very quickly and also picked up the non-verbal expressions (his face and gaze were filled with hope and sincerity while asking). I think this was when she knew for sure that he had a feeling for her. If you read Jade Dynasty 2, you'll see that they get married, Xueqi moves in with Xiaofan in the Bamboo Peak and they have a son, Zhang Xiao Ding. So yes, a happy ending.

By asking her to run away with him from her sect (when they are trying to set her up with Li Xun) he basically confesses his love, proposes and tries to take the bride away. In season 4 you'll see them holding hand, cheating death in the ancient cave facing the Devil Beast, then having a sweet night together (cuddling only, no s…x). And in the grand finale, he pops the question, once again indirectly, on the Great Bamboo Peak, on the night of her senior sisters wedding, through an ancient poem. She doesnt answer, but they hold each others hand, look each other in the eyes and both smile. The end.
If Lu Xueqi was given the chance to learn more Heavenly Books, could she have been as powerful as Gui Li? She looks like the only other person able to understand it fast. But Gui Li was given Brahman wisdom and also has inferno mirror. Their weapons like equally powerful, but the fire stick able to heal/ regenerate after sucking blood, so still another advantage for Gui Li?
probably. even now, their strength is quite close with Gui Li a bit stronger. But for sure, two of them are the strongest in their generation. Just two of them can probably win other people in the same generation combined.
Actually Xueqi can't learn the heaven book. There's a specific requirement that it needs one who has learned at least skills from 2 different sects from a young age. That's why Biyao's father didn't practice it even when the book is with his sect. He didn't fulfill the requirements.
@ Somewhere in the movie she did manage to comprehend the 3rd book after recalling how Gui Li used the Brahman wisdom (she practiced it at the pond surrounded by fine bamboos). I think it was right after the part where XiaoBai asked Gui Li if the monkey ever bathed. So yeah, she learnt the 3rd book.

Maybe it was just some strong feeling/emotion which was similar to love, from the times they were together, who among us didn't experience feelings like that when we were 16? Xueqi is an introvert and has a cold appearance so she didn't express her feeling as well as Yao. Hence she might look distant in movies but in the novel her feeling was clearly described. Being a top looking girl, spending a good 10 years just to keep Xiaofan image/memories in her heart, to me that's one of the greatest act of love. She also stood by him multiple times, when he was in danger or despair. She could even sense it, that the man in her heart was out there in the darkness, facing life/death. Being older and more mature than both Yao and Xiaofan, she was well aware of her responsibility and expectation from her people, she clearly drew a line between responsibility and love. She's just not a 16 year old girl full of impulse. When she said that she got no greater wish than dying with the man she loved, for me that just sealed it. She deserved to be with Xiaofan in every way.

Actually Xueqi can't learn the heaven book. There's a specific requirement that it needs one who has learned at least skills from 2 different sects from a young age. That's why Biyao's father didn't practice it even when the book is with his sect. He didn't fulfill the requirements.
@ Somewhere in the movie she did manage to comprehend the 3rd book after recalling how Gui Li used the Brahman wisdom (she practiced it at the pond surrounded by fine bamboos). I think it was right after the part where XiaoBai asked Gui Li if the monkey ever bathed. So yeah, she learnt the 3rd book.

Maybe it was just some strong feeling/emotion which was similar to love, from the times they were together, who among us didn't experience feelings like that when we were 16? Xueqi is an introvert and has a cold appearance so she didn't express her feeling as well as Yao. Hence she might look distant in movies but in the novel her feeling was clearly described. Being a top looking girl, spending a good 10 years just to keep Xiaofan image/memories in her heart, to me that's one of the greatest act of love. She also stood by him multiple times, when he was in danger or despair. She could even sense it, that the man in her heart was out there in the darkness, facing life/death. Being older and more mature than both Yao and Xiaofan, she was well aware of her responsibility and expectation from her people, she clearly drew a line between responsibility and love. She's just not a 16 year old girl full of impulse. When she said that she got no greater wish than dying with the man she loved, for me that just sealed it. She deserved to be with Xiaofan in every way.
