Very interesting to hear what went on, Ballinalee suffered a great deal during those times, thanks for taking us on this historical journey Bernard and Father Tom.
Great video and loving all the videos about the War of Independence in this series, I only discovered them in the past week and they are very informative, my grandfather was a volunteer in 1920 and I think he was present for some of this in Ballinalee, only this year I managed to get his account of the times that he gave to the pension board to get his IRA pension
Very interesting and informative Bernard Sexton should be proud of his grandfather part in Longford inspiring part in Ireland's war of independence led by legendary leader Sean maceoin
My wife was a McKeon and was related to Sean McEoin - Sean’s father was a gg grandfather. Sean was such a big name in the family history that it seemed odd to hear his name casually mentioned. I guess the Kieran’s and Farrells and Hogans who are as scattered through the world as my wife was (Australia) feel the same oddness at hearing their names again.
On a visit home, I’m from Belfast, we stayed around Longford and it was the Longford’s paper’s anniversary. It was interesting to read after the treaty about how good it was to see all the young men who had been on the run were now at dances, just doing what young men do and who weeks before were checking how many belles they had left.
When are you mr Farrell going to write a new in-depth biography on the great legendary Longford leader Sean maceoin e it's long overdue your a Longford man mr Farrell
These burnings were a strange part of the era - My Great Grandfather was called The Man Who Burned Calafenish ( though it really didn't burn at least not much) started with someone shooting at his car. He piled out with some Free State soldiers demanding answers and things got rowdy..
The British forces stole a range from Reynold's for the old school building and were asked , by the military in Longford on a complaint from Mr (Larry) Reynolds, to give it back or pay for it .. £5Stg I believe.!
