Physical media isn't perfect either especially in this day and age. Games require day 1 patches because most are broken and unfinished. Also the whole DRM crap requires you to connect to the Internet. Disk and cartridges also degrade overtime. Yes it may take 20-30 years but nothing lasts forever

I've been a gamer since the early 80s and have bought and sold multiple retro game collections for many consoles. I personally enjoy digital delivery and immediacy of non-physical games, and having not been concerned about collecting since the 360 days I love the lack of clutter. I was never lucky enough to have a dedicated games room so had piles of games sitting in every corner of the house. I really enjoy browsing digital shops on modern consoles and whilst I completely understand the nostalgia derived from buying a physical game and examining the booklets and inlays as a non-collector it doesn't adversely affect me. Especially as such an enourmous body of classic retro games are now available digitally

I miss being a kid and walking into the store and seeing a whole section with multiple shelves full of games, and each one had a Manuel! Some even came with cool little posters or maps, I remember Link to the Past came with a map and a little hint booklet alongside the manuel.

One of my mates bought a digital only PS5 and has already shelled out over £200 on more hard drive space...I've got the disc version and am more than happy with that...oh on top of that....have you ever tried to trade in a digital game for some other games? ;op. Plenty (most) of "physical" games these days aren't really physical, but simply an installer for a launcher that triggers the download. So if you're in a place without internet access, you won't be able to install or play the game. To me, that kind of ruins the point of physical games.
If all physical games allowed full game installation from the media, and they didn't require online access, would never stop you from playing because "an update is available" etc. Then I'd but physical games all the time.

There are advantages with digital media. But a lot of disadvantages too - I loved reading manuals, learning about a game and its controls. And there is also the fact that with subscriptions and online stores, we are seeing games disappear suddenly or be changed beyond recognition by patches & updates. I don't play any of the live service games, they just don't appeal to me.

Thanks for featuring my clip at my local store :) it did make me laugh - funny to see that a possible shopper decided to go with Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and GTA V instead of said oil.
The Asda in the footage is over the road from CEX so guess gamers will choose just to go there instead for this store to pick up their games.
I think the next wave of consoles in the next 5+ years will be digital only and no phyhcial alternative. I also think more gaming will be included into other devices (If it isn't already) included in Prime , Netflix etc etc
I don't buy modern games per say, most of the games which get released on say Xbox are on Xbox Game Pass and more often than not won't get a phyhcial release of said game or it's a Limited Run on PlayStation. So for me the majority of my games are retro/re-releases (The latest House of the Dead finally of a Xbox phyhcial release so picked that up) are phycial.

I love physical for the same reasons you said! And I'm actually from a younger demographic so it's not just about bringing me back to a bygone era. Supermarkets are quite lacklustre for games including my local one, but luckily we've got CeX. If a physical copy exists, I always go for that. In some cases it has been cheaper from CeX than from a digital store. Personally I don't think physical media will actually die - there are enough fans and users of it to keep it alive, similarly to the CD format that is still around :)

Before the Xbox 360/PS3 era, it was much rarer for supermarkets to stock video games regularly at all.
I suspect that the supermarkets are reacting to a general trend of buying patterns in the last 3 years.
During lockdown some will have switched to digital, but many will also have just got used to buying online and getting games delivered which is often way more convenient and cheaper.
I'm still 100% physical in ALL instances, unless it's an indie title. I don't play mobile phones.
The end of physical media will slow my modem gaming to a crawl. £70 is generally more than I'm willing to pay.
And older games are just as much fun, often better and there's a lot more variety in the older generations.

The only physical games i now buy are first party Nintendo titles on Switch. For my Series X, nothing but digital. The last physical Xbox game i bought was ReCore for my Xbox One X. PS5, i don't have one yet... honestly don't have much interest in getting one yet while i still love my PS4 Pro. My interest for physical modern games started to die once they started to remove the manual (later 360 era) A game case without a manual just seems so pointless and dull, i just stopped caring about collecting or buying physical games by then. I was born in 83 so have very fond memories for earlier systems, got into gaming in 1990 with the original Game Boy (my first game system) and the following year my first console, a Super Nintendo... from which i didn't have long. After a few weeks it stopped working so my dad took it back to the shop and exchanged for a Mega Drive, which i loved. I'm more into retro gaming now then modern gaming and collected for SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii and Wii U. PS1-PS4. Original Xbox-Series. Mega Drive, Saturn (the Saturn is my all time favourite system) and Dreamcast. I still consider these three systems to be the greatest trilogy of consoles ever (i have no nostalgia for the Master System so don't collect or really care about it) I'm more then fine with digital regarding modern gaming, it's the way of the future. It's practical and saves me a lot of space so i can fill it with stuff i actually care about, retro games. Just watched more of your video... i wasn't aware supermarkets still sell games. The last time i remember seeing a game in a supermarket was Xbox 360 and PS3 era. I live in London. The only gaming stuff i still see are Xbox GamePass,PlayStation Store vouchers and Nintendo Store points... no games. I thought supermarkets stopped selling games early Xbox One and PS4.

I went to my local Sainsbury for the first time in ages as I usual do click and collect, I was shocked that the entire media section was gone! No movies, music CDs or games of any kind and it used to be massive, There is a large Tesco near by and again the upstairs had a large media and electronics section and now it’s all gone and half the floor is empty. I’m physical media all the way and I’m even considering getting a uhd Blu-ray player and want to buy a small curated physical film collection. I sold most of my Blu-rays about ten years ago and a massive dvd collection before that. I’ve kept a handful of choice box sets but it hit home when I went on prime video to watch a movie I spotted on there a week before only to see it was removed!
As for games always get a physical copy as you have more control over it but it annoys me when you get a voucher for half the content so the publisher can scrap money from 2nd hand sales still. I heard Sonic Origins Plus physical release won’t have the game gear titles on the disc/cart and there is a dlc code in the box……

This is a great video discussion that has me on the fence. 43 years young I grew up with that pride of having a library shelves personally displaying my collection of Snes and Megadrive and Amiga 500 (oh and Gameboy) games. Those were magic times an inspired me to buy the odd bikermouse and even when I got Lego Starwars on the PSP those case instructions also had the very tempting lego sets which you could buy and build.
Then my kids entered the world and proudly demonstrated how CD DVD based games are inferior in every way... from losing the discs to putting them in the wrong boxes, to scratching them. After needing to Lego City Chase McCain for a 4th time on PS4... I decided to bring myself and my kids into a digital download only rule... (since 2013... almost every game has been a digital purchase)... 😢 but It means they can find the game whenever they want... and they always worked... Thank you

It's sad that the physical media option seems to be disappearing. The glory days of big box games disappeared when CD's became the common delivery device. I do feel the article you quoted is a little unfair, digital games on mobile shouldn't be included as there isn't a physical option.
The one thing I really struggle to grasp is, why hasn't dvd/Blu-ray done the same? How many people have streaming services available? Movies are much more accessible via streaming/digital and yet, the physical aisle is usually much bigger.

I have fond memories of picking up my first ever brand new physical media release and subsequently favourite game of all time Black Ops 1 from Asda back in the day. Sadly physical media is dying as a whole and for me it’s killing my love for video games, the community just doesn’t seem to be the same anymore but it could just be that that the people I grew up playing online with have moved on with families etc….

I'm more like a mixed bag. I don't sleep on big digital sales on PS Store, many of them are unbeatable. In my local supermarket there's a very small shelf with AAA games at full price, when digitally is already on a summer sale or something. So I take that into account. The bulk of my physical games is for the Switch, then a few on PS5. I have more digital games on PS5 because of the sales. I consider double dipping in case I really enjoy a game. If you really want all bells and whistles you have the option of day one editions and collectors editions. But for the prices they ask for I prefer to buy digital or physical games. I went to my local ASDA in Spondon Derby last night. I didn't specifically look for the gaming isle as I was returning some shoes but on the way in near the entrance there was a Diablo 4 display with cardboard cases for the PS4, PS5 and XBOX Series S/X. I did think I'll get my phone out and film it for Gemma but my fekkin battery had died so I'm surprised they didn't have one at your ASDA. It was only a small display so you could easily of missed it. It wasn't down a gaming isle but in a small display stand near the entrance next to the clothes. It clocked me straight away though as I've been a huge fan of Diablo 2 since 1999 and specifically went in to PC gaming for it and Warcraft. Even went to the same store at midnight for the release of Diablo 3. Many people probably miss it but I'm a huge Diablo fan. Not so much 3 though 😂. If I go back I'll take a picture

Why are you Anglos so eager to get stuffed by gaming companies? In the rest of Europe is not nearly as bad, but the world champions of the resistance against digitalisation are Asians. In Japan and other Asian countries they buy all their games physical, they are so protective of physical media's that musical CDs albums are still kind of mainstream (although in decline).

@@DioBrando-qr6ye I don't think it's a matter of Anglos wanting to get "stuffed". That's just a prick question in my opinion but I guess I'll reply anyway. The truth is that game companies have been selling games digitally ever since the technology allowed for it and over the years more and more people have chosen that option. I had a guy tell me once that he bought games digitally because he just didn't want games taking up space in his home. He didn't feel he was getting fucked at all.
Now It's true that affluent Asian countries like Japan and South Korea enjoy physical games but even they have a large percentage of games being sold on digital stores as well. You're just wrong that they buy all their games physical. Console gaming in the majority of Asian countries is actually fairly rare though. Most people in a country like Vietnam are just downloading games on their cell phones if they play video games at all.

If you exclude mobile it's around 15% of revenue (not unit sales) are physical games.
But you have to factor in practically all PC games are digital approx 20% of the market, so excluding that physical jumps to 18.75% for consoles.
Also any DLC, Micro transactions and subs account for over half the digital revenue for consoles.
If we under estimate and say 50% is DLC, Micro and subs (this would include Xbox and PSN passes)
The split for just for base games is 68.5% Digital vs 31.5% physical for console only game sales in the UK. Since I under estimated the DLC/subs, physical is likely to be slightly higher.
So it's not as bad for physical gaming as the headlines suggest. :D
And I don't think these figures take into account any 2nd hand sales, so CEX, ebay and other market places
Disclaimer, figures used here have some room for error as they come from multiple sources which in turn are based on estimates as game publishers don't all disclose actual sales figures.

But I will say that for all you physical collectors, I hope there are at least really dedicated small gaming stores that continue to carry that flag for as long as they can.

I used to prefer physical games years ago, but nowadays i am just indifferent about it, and i prefer the convinence of buying from the PlayStation Store, as well as not having to worry about discs that can potentially fet damaged.

I grew up in the 90s and I absolutely love physical media. I used to save up my pocket money for weeks and then my mum would take me to buy a new PlayStation 1 game. I’d sit and stare at the case and manual the whole way home. Even to this day I’ll always opt to buy physical over digital. I don’t like the idea of paying for thin air. I can’t sell it on, or trade it, hold it in my hands and appreciate it. Or even forget about it only to find it years later and feel all those feelings and have those memories again. Also I’m a designer/illustrator and I just love printed media. Especially on the older games. Some of the artwork in manuals, or even on the actual disks is unreal. Japanese sega Saturn games have a beautiful look to them. I love buying old store promo posters for old games too. If everything goes digital we will lose so much! I dunno. Makes me sad 🤣

The thing that gets me is that a lot of the time the digital is more expensive than the physical release, it's just a duplication of data without any manufacturing cost. When the servers go down you never get that game back, physical copy means you actually own the game and can play it whenever you like for the rest of your life.

I definitely buy the physical version of game's,but if that isn't an option then I will buy digital. Sometimes I will hold on incase physical version is released, have done that recently with Getsufumaden Undying Moon(finally out physically next month) . I have found that if you buy physical games by Indie developer's then sometimes you get thing's included , Dredge which was released recently springs to mind.

All the superstores I visit seems to have cut in half their game display stock. My local Game also has cut back on stock. Literally one wall of games and all the others are plushies, gadgets, board games or phones in a glass cabinet. I don’t like where this is going.
The new Spiderman 2 collectors edition won’t have a physical disc….wtf!! This could be the end of me buying gaming systems that are digital only or turning that way.
Also Walmart no longer own ASDA.
Gaming and movies, the two biggest sectors of the entertainment industry are being shafted by the digital medium. Cinemas shutting down and gaming shops closing. I don’t like this future we’re about to step into.

  • @squarewindow
    @squarewindow ปีที่แล้ว

    Good topic, Gemma.
First thing to say is I dislike the term "digital" when referring to downloaded games - physical media is also digital, there's no such thing as an analogue Blu-ray! What is actually meant when people say "digital" to mean downloaded games is "digitally distributed", i.e. downloaded. At which point you may as well just call it a download instead of a digital copy. But I appreciate I am pedantic so will move on swiftly...
I'm 40 and grew up as most of us did collecting games. For me, my circumstances were that I moved from "the north" to London for work and knew I'd be moving around constantly trying not to get ripped off too badly by parasite landlords and didn't want the hassle of having to cart a metric shit ton of games with me whenever I moved, not to mention space restrictions in London accommodation. Just don't have the space for tons of game boxes any more.
I decided from the PS4/XB1 generation onwards that I'd be primarily download-only, with a couple of caveats. First one is that if a game on a Nintendo console is available physically I will buy physical as opposed to download because I don't trust Nintendo to not just turn off all their infrastructure at the drop of a hat, meaning me losing access to all my download purchases. I'm aware this is a risk with Sony and Microsoft too, but it's less of an imminent risk because these companies live in the present when it comes to online, whereas Nintendo are stuck in a time warp where they are 10 years behind everyone else.
Second caveat is that if I really love a game I've bought as a download I will later purchase a physical copy for collecting purposes, but this is quite rare nowadays because the bar for being happy to have a game box taking up some of my limited space is quite high for me now, and also, let's be honest - 95% of modern games are crap. 😂
I know there are downsides to buying downloads, the main one for me is the cost of buying games through the platform holders' stores where there is no competition for prices. I usually try to negate this by waiting for a sale, I don't need to buy games the moment they're released and it's incredibly rare that I do this. I think this year I've only bought RE4 and SF6 at release. Reselling/trading in isn't a concern for me because I never have done this even with boxed copies.
I know there are other downsides too (just as there are upsides - love not having to find and insert a disc and just pick the game from your game library on your HDD, or boot up my old non-Pro PS4 when visiting my parents and download and carry on playing a recent release I bought at my flat in London).
Everyone's circumstances and priorities are different and what works for one may not work for another. 15 years ago I would never have considered buying a game as a download if a physical version was available, but to be honest once I made that decision to just jump I haven't looked back or ever regretted it. It made sense for me.

I only ever play physical. I won't purchase digital. That's just me. I don't believe you can legitimately own something digital. I like to own something I'm paying top dollar for. Something can happen to those companies or they can stop providing the service and I still own it because when I bought it, it became mine. I'm not paying an ownership fee to technically just be renting something for God knows how long until they stop providing it.

Physical media isn't perfect either especially in this day and age. Games require day 1 patches because most are broken and unfinished. Also the whole DRM crap requires you to connect to the Internet. It is essentially a key to confirm you have the game. Disk and cartridges also degrade over time. Yes it may take 20-30 years but things dont last forever

I buy used Switch games physically, I did buy a few digitally but after having to sell a few games and noticing the price of 1st party Nintendo games never going down I decided if I ever want a new one I'll get it slightly cheaper on eBay rather than pay full price for an old game. Other than that I play on PC mostly because the online play is free and there's sales all the time. Of course if there's a new indie game for Dreamcast etc. I'll buy it physically.

I am pretty much the same age as Gem. It was great back in the days of NES/SNES getting those game in boxes. Even when not playing the game, I would like reading through the manuals. I moved onto PC gaming where you had those awesome massive boxes and manuals for games. In a relatively short time that change to DVD cases and now there is no physical media for PC, its all Steam or Epic game stores. I started playing consoles again during 360/PS3 era and you still got good physical media and if you had the console and the physical game, you could play that game. It was worth collecting.
The PS5/XSX era is the death of physical media, we are already in the era of digital. Physical media for this generation has two uses and that is trading in or sharing a game with friends and family (which is a pretty good use). However, all you are trading a license key in BluRay format. The games themselves are not even on the discs fully. SF6 was a good example, the base game was on there but the actual modes like WT, Battle Hub, etc had to be download. You can't play the game with the disc alone. MW2 had only 70MB on a BluRay disc for PS5 and Jedi Survivor required you to download a big portion of the game. Then there is the day one patches to just make new releases even playable, making more of a mockery of physical media.
The main driver for this change is the Internet. As it has become more accessible and faster it is making physical redundant. Not just with games but areas as well like newspapers and even movies and TV have changed drastically.

I do miss the old days of physical media with manuals, feelies, etc. I remember getting Falcon 3.0 or Flight Simulator and getting a manual that was hundreds of pages. Spent hours going through the manuals made the games even better.
I think the thing I worry about is that while a physical game can be played whenever you want, digital games require that online connection as well as access to some servers. Game developers eventually will pull those servers essentially deleting the game.
Of course we all know by now that we don't really 'own' games we buy anyway.
