Great information. One suggestion. Pulling the weight with the rubber band, through one time is called a clove hitch. Pull it through two times for a double clove hitch. Keep the wraps in line, will give a better grab on the leader.
I been using ur rubber band idea for a long time if u remember and it changed the game for me. As a slow trolling down rigger and for bottom fishing. Anybody who talks shit about this rig is clueless how effective it is and simple. So easy to add or reduce weight as we drift deep or shallow. Good stuff Ricky
You can also allow the line to slowly pay out through your fingers after hitting the bottom when drifting. This gives you a better chance at catching the larger mutton. When they bite they "run off" line and your spool will audiably speed up. Engage and crank quickly till you come tight. The run off is why I love fishing for the muttons

So if I'm using braided line , i need to attached to it, monofilament (what length?) , and then to the monofilament, the 50 feet of leader? or just the leader straight to the braided line ?

Used this rig yesterday, need a swivel on the sinker, it spins and twists up the line. Re spooling my mutton reel today.

You can do with ever way you like as long you do the long leader if you fishing over 250 feet just braid to leader !
