Anyone who wants can vote for lalalala to win a VMA for best kpop right now! Ty for this reaction. This song/mv was my first real experience with SKZ...it changed my whole world and sent me down the best rabbit hole of my life😂. Also, felix is totally saying "shit"❤.
Someone else may be able to say this more clearly but.... The giant "monsters" are emotions (the band kids are representing them and like stage fright and the desire to push through to overcome the fears/emotional state). Throughout the music video, the emotions disappear (anger, happiness, sadness) one by one until only Rak is left, probably representing how this song makes you forget everything else but Rak/rock/pleasure. They also nod to The Dark Knight, Pirates of the Carribbean and Mad Max movie references.
The music video is using the Chinese proverb of the four emotions: 喜怒哀樂 (joy, anger, sadness, and pleasure) which are represented by the four Chinese characters that float above the scenes. Each location is where that emotion lives (pirates - anger, bank with clowns - joy, all white - sadness, mad max (fire) - pleasure). The giants represent the anxiety one must overcome (like stage fright or fear of trying something new or different). SKZ are the representation of those children's imagination on stage going through the emotions while performing in front of an audience, which feels big and overwhelming at the beginning (giants), but ends up just being their parents and friends who love them and are proud of them. The Chinese character of the song title 樂 means pleasure and in Chinese is pronounced like La, hence lalalala. The Korean title 락 also means pleasure/happiness and is pronounced like Rock. So they traverse the worlds of each emotion, overcoming wild situations, until all that is left is the pleasure of music. The lyrics also reflect these themes with rock being equated to heaven and shaking off worries and just enjoying the music.
I am so enjoying your journey into SKZ. I have found that even by watching the teasers and prologues for better context of this MV, I still miss a lot of subtleties. So it is really cool when people take the time to explain the cultural context behind certain choices and inspirations that a non-native may not pick up on. [Lore Concept] Like the 'monsters' in front of the "drumline kids" could be part of Japanese folklore called "Umibōzu ". They are renowned as the most terrifying sea monsters believed to be the souls of drowned monks or unfortunate individuals who perished at sea. Over time, fueled by resentment, they transform into these bald-headed, big black-eyed sea giants, some of them smaller in size. They emerge on peaceful nights to instill fear by smashing boats and drowning sailors who venture into their territory. Essentially, these monsters were symbolize children's fears [closing their eyes] while performing, with Stray Kids encouraging them to enjoy the stage & overcome their fears. 🖖🏽
If you wanna know the story of the MV in detail there is a mini documentation where Stray Kids, the director and more talk about it. its not too long (9 minutes) so you can watch it if you're interested
Watching the album trailer before watching a title track or listening to an album would probably help you understand the story better 🖤🖤 I would love to see you react to them~ Also their mashups are songs themselves, like standalone songs. They are a mashup, but they are so unique they are like their own songs. They are extremely good and I would recommend them if/when you do more album listens 🖤
Straykids are one of the most stable groups in kpop. You need to watch their 2024 Lollapalooza festivel ...INCREDIBLE
