    Thanks Dave - Great mail bag. Just to clarify, the answering machine was digital for the outgoing message (limited to 10-12 seconds) and there was built-in voice synthesis which recorded the date and time for incoming messages. The board I sent was actually from one of the pre-production units that was designed by Phillips. The redesigned NuTone Model was the IM5006 - which became a very popular model and it was in production for 9 years. - Chris

    The monitor likely uses HDMI or DP alternate mode. These modes physically connect to the GPU via USB-PD, instead of tunneling the data over the USB digital interface. Since most desktop GPUs are external, there isn't any connection between them and the USB-PD chip on the motherboard. (USB-PD handles both power delivery and alternate mode configuration).
    These monitors are intended more for laptops that have USB-C ports.

    I still have one of those intercom/radio systems in my house. They were really popular in the late 70s.

    • @chouseification
      @chouseification 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We had one when we lived in Texas - this was Plano, so most houses had them. It was pretty useless, since the audio quality wasn't all that great, so you could summon somebody from the kitchen (calling just their room) or broadcast to the whole house - but there were no room-to-room features besides at that main console... so basically a hunk of junk. An invention that didn't really look into what features would have been needed to make it good - most importantly IMO more pairs for sending commands and/or out-of-band signalling to add those features like room-to-room, etc. The concept was neat, but I can count on my hand the number of times we used it to play music through the house... only a few cocktail parties.

    • @northsideservicecompany3567

      @@EdwardCoffey No clue, but I did find reference to a DS-206L being Casio manufactured, and the calculator had a _very_ similar form factor as the one you show. I'd guess Casio, based on the DS-2000B printed on the circuit board.
      Many of the primary manufacturers TI, Casio, Sharp, Canon, etc made basic calculators that could be branded with customer's own branding, hence why yours is branded as "National Australia Bank". TI was the first to manufacture calculators for others, and at one time even sold chip sets and keyboards to other manufacturers.
      That said, TI is VERY fond of the LED voltage clamp, but they aren't the only ones to do it. Looking online, I do see Sharp and Casio both do it, but TI... TI slaps that even in some modern models. I know there's examples of TI using LEDs as voltage clamps at least up into the early 2000s.

    27:35 We cracked open some of our pocket calculators (not only TI) and found LEDs in calculators with solar panels quite often. You are probably right with your idea, that it is a simple and cheap voltage regulator. The characteristic of an LED seems to meet the wanted point of voltage-regulation best, no need for more parts. As soon as voltage excceeds about 1,5...1.6 V, the LED lights up an 'burns away' excess power. ...clever and cheap...

    The bottom 'limiter' is to hold the weight of the entire arm and swing the head and arm sideways out of the way. Work away happily and if you need some magnification just swing the head over and it is good to go. Super convenient.

    The Micro:Bit.... what can I say, it is neat looking however there are some problems with it:
    1) Several commercial parties involved (copycat Microsoft Blocks in the beginning, replaced with Scratch which is better) ;
    2) The documentation for teachers is too often incomplete or incorrect or not translated;
    3) Some software (for example on a tablet) doesn't work;
    4) The product stimulates to use (Micro-)python instead of C, C-like language;
    5) The 'display' of 5x5 is very limited;
    6) To access the full pinout you need an adapter (which is not included, some third-party made an adapter for it);
    7) For what you can do with it, it is extremely pricey, close to buy a raspberry Pi ;
    8) If you want more with it, you have to rely on online software of NXP, which is not hassle free.
    I was on a Maker-faire in 2018 and spoke a NXP guy and get one to try it out. Nice. Tried it out for one week. Soon I detect the listed problems, the idea is great however there are some flaws that makes me wonder what a good reason is to use this as educational product, especially when it comes to teacher guidelines. It looks like a marketing strategy to bind kids to companies or brands. I don't think it is a good idea, I like the Arduino way more than this "all-in-one-complete-wonder" solution, if you want to do more you have to buy more official micro:bit branded stuff, like a toy with add-ons to make the basics more functional. Take a look at the box you received.
    It is difficult to explain but there is something wrong with this product, to me it doesn't feel right. The micro:bit is designed to learn programming, software, no hardware, hardware are just tools. I think Arduino did it better, maybe a little harder to learn (because of all the possibilities) however you learn more from it because it is not a toy but can threated as a toy to play with. Micro:bit force kids into one direction.
    I love to see what Sagan thinks about this product after his excellent 8-bit kit solder job, to childish I think, boring. One note, you need to buy a micro:bit first ;-)

    I have almost the exact same microscope branded by AmScope (as noted later in the vid - hadn't quite gotten there yet as I starting writing this). I only have a single illuminator though. I have quite a bit of optics experience through photography and pro 'scopes, and considering I had a very limited budget - and desperately needed (wanted) one - I've been very happy using this. The image is very nice, no aberrations visible. Focussing smooth. I just stick with the 10X and have done trace repairs next to 0402 components (and reflowing those - a bit small for my taste!). Mostly I've done a lot of builds using 0603 and 0805, etc., using solder paste, tweezers, and the cheap hot air station building kits and prototypes (along with the 0.2 mm Hakko tips). Love using it, as for me it's less wear and tear on my less-than-perfect shoulders (I keep my forearms resting). I guess that would apply to any SMT work though!
    For capturing stills or video, I've used my iPhone and an ocular adapter. It just clamps onto the eyepiece and clamps onto the phone. Once you get the hang of centering the mount, I've shot some perfectly acceptable micrographs.
    Now to get on to building my new lab bench and set things up again. Moved about 6 mo ago and it's still on the to do list. Gotta get shelves setup so I can push the 'scope back when not using it. Speaking of which: the "elbow" joint allows me to reclaim horizontal workspace. It takes up a lot less real estate when folded up. Can't think of another use. The few degrees down from level can help fine tune one's comfort, but otherwise it just gets the head up and out.
    Enjoy! Keep up the great vids!

      Yes --- Royal made real, old-school typewriters with actual mechanical keys and (originally) required no electrical power whatsoever. Then eventually electric typewriters. They apparently went through some interesting ownership changes, and you can apparently still buy an actual Royal typewriter today -- which I think is kinda cool, actually.

    Your desktop doesnt support USB display, you need a GPU with onboard USB-C, or a motherboard that does support USB for video (if you have a motherboard that supports USB video you can still use the GPU to accelerate renders and pass it to the onboard, but you need to use the motherboard out)

    27:33 LED is there to regulate the voltage output from the solar cell to 1.2V. I had a cheap solar calculator back when I was in school and there was a red LED soldered across the solar cell. I was curious and I removed the LED and calculator screen would turn on all segments whenever there was a strong light (overvoltage ~2.5 V). With LED across, the voltage never went above 1.2V
