Fun fact: the most loyal troops to defend Hitler to the death in Berlin before the fall were the "SS Charlemagne division" the French SS (some escaped and became in command of the French foreing legion after the war, hence... this song...)

Yes. Many SS escaped to the legion to start a new life under a new name, knowing they'd be persecuted just for holding any title associated with "SS". They adapted some of their German songs to French, including this one and "Anne-Marie".
