Making a beach at the lake, brick sand vs mason sand, how to

  • Our house on the lake had a sandy beach when we purchased it but the sand was dirty, old and a lot of it had washed into the lake. Time to add some new sand but which sand is best, mason sand or brick sand? Brick sand is cheaper here which is what you would use as a base for pavers, Mason sand is a little more money and what you would use to mix with mortar. Mason sand will not last as long because its all fine sand and will blow away or wash away much faster. However, brick sand will turn into tiny pebbles when the finer sand blows away and the bigger stuff is all thats left. Brick sand is what was used before we purchased it but we decided to try mason sand. I think it was about $2 more per ton. We bought 15 tons for about $475 delivered. I also purchased a sand mat from lakemat.com to go under the sand. Its supposed to help keep the sand in place. This is not the best how to video but might help some that are considering building a beach on the shore of their lake. My kids really love it and they spend a lot of time playing at the beach. The mason sand is a huge improvement in terms of feel on the feet. It feels more like California beach sand. Some areas might have other options for sand but here in the midwest these were my only two choices. My tractor is a Mahindra emax25 4x4 with locking diff. Not sure if the extra weight of the backhoe was helpful or hurtful. There were times I thought I was going to get stuck but never did. I don't have any experience doing this kind of work. I used the loader bucket on float to push and back drag the sand when I spread it out.

You did ok in spreading the sand. One thing to try to avoid is having the bucket tilted way down when pushing as that places a lot of stress on the front end loader hydraulics. There's pics online of subcompact tractors with bent/broken hydraulic cylinders from doing similar things. While the loose sand is probably no big deal, try to remember to keep the bucket flat and don't try to bulldoze hard material.
    Nice vid!

2020 update. Keeping the beech maintained is a challenge. Rain erosion is a problem. The sand moves down the shoreline due to the direction the waves hit my beach and it takes hours to move it back with my small tractor. Weeds are a battle. Goose poop is frustrating. I have accepted the fact that the beach is a high maintenance amenity.

We're looking to install a beach in the City I work in. Is the mason sand more difficult to maintain than the sand you originally had in place (brick sand)? How much has it eroded away in two years? Was there any erosion with the previous sand?

@@allisonm.5624 I don't feel like I keep track of it enough to give a positive answer on all the details. They both erode. The mason sand is much nicer but probably does not stay put as well. If had could start from scratch the most important thing I would consider is where the beach is located. I would put the Beach in a spot where the waves roll in at 90 degrees and not from the side. have a gentle slope for the beach and be sure there will be no rain runoff going towards the beach and I would use the mason sand.

Sand on the beach would be taken at the bottom of the lake. We pumped sand and water from the bottom of the lake with a motor pump for dirty water using a Bagermaster suction nozzle.

Thank you. We had a lot of trouble with heavy rains flowing right through the beach and washing the sand into the lake. Late in the fall of 2019 we installed a cement curb between the grass and the sand to divert the rain water around the beach. We built the curb up a bit and graded the grass side to keep rain water away. At this time we also increased the size of the beach so I brought in another 15 tons of mason sand which added about another 12" to the depth to the main area. It also made the angle of the beach steeper where it approaches the water and now we are getting more erosion at the waters edge than we used to. I'm curious how it will hold up over the next year. The mason sand is fine enough to blow away. There is quite a bit going over the curb and into the grass from wind but I have it only a couple inches below the curb right now.

We just bought some lakefront property. We bought one of the cheap plots...low water and lots of reeds. We would to clear the vegetation and build a beach.
It appears you used a landscaping/weed barrier under the sand. Do you know how effective that would be against reeds?
You acknowledged that you are not an expert. Do you know of any experts or other resources to consult for building a personal beach?

    • @miscvideos5020

I had a little bit of reeds and literally tons of primrose. They are tough. In some areas I pulled them, some I sprayed them with a lake safe weed killer which takes a few applications and I used a weed mat in one area. The weed mat works by blocking the sun. Pretty much nothing will grow without sun. www.lakemat.com/lakemat-pro/ I bought the big one and its a pain to move especially after being under water for a while. If its a small area the mat is great. You can kill an area then move it and kill another area. I had about 9000sf of lake weeds to kill so just using the mat wasn't going to work for me. The best is pulling them because you avoid all that vegetation decaying and creating muck in your lake. I spent many many hours pulling thousands of pounds of weeds up onto the shore, letting them dry then burning them with a propane torch. I used my little backhoe to scrap them out of the lake but also did a lot by hand. You could use a weed cutter like this www.thepondguy.com/product/jenlis-weedrazer-express-aquatic-weed-cutter/aquatic-weed-removal-tools?p=PPCGOOGA&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIps-gv8ax6wIVxx-tBh2uhAQTEAQYAiABEgL50_D_BwE to cut them at the base so you can get most of it out before you put the weed mat over them to kill what's left. Best of luck.

Now that you've gone through this (weeding, sand...), do you think it was worth it?
We have 230ft of frontage on a lake. We bought this as an investment, with the expectation of renting it out. So we want it to be nice and useable, but low maintenance would be a plus. There is a lot of "muck" that we'd like to clean-up also. I'm not sure if renting a tractor with a giant rake is worth the expense or use a similar, but smaller hand-operated rake is practical.

@@gregd4391Tough call! there is nothing low maintenance about having a beach if you want to keep it nice, but on the other hand I think it would be an amazing draw for a vacation rental. If it were me, I think I would just fix up a small area and make a small beach then factor in the maintenance cost of the beach in the rental price. There are lots of ways to battle muck (bacteria pellets, mechanical excavation, muck mats, etc). Pick one that sounds good to you and get to work :-)

I added the mat. I did it because I had purchased it when I bought my weed mat and had it on hand. It goes about 2 feet into the water.

    • @miscvideos5020
      @miscvideos5020  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@ramonabailey572 Its a barrier so if you were trying to put a beach on top of muck it would help but they also sell a muck mat that may be a better solution. The sand mat is to prevent your sand from mixing with the dirt below.

      🔴 What Is Islam? ⚠️
🔴 Islam is not just another religion.
🔵 It is the same message preached by Moses, Jesus and Abraham.
🔴 Islam literally means ‘submission to God’ and it teaches us to have a direct relationship with God.
🔵 It reminds us that since God created us, no one should be worshipped except God alone.
🔴 It also teaches that God is nothing like a human being or like anything that we can imagine.
🌍 The concept of God is summarized in the Quran as:
📖 { “Say, He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He does not give birth, nor was He born, and there is nothing like Him.”} (Quran 112:1-4)[4] 📚
🔴 Becoming a Muslim is not turning your back to Jesus.
🔵 Rather it’s going back to the original teachings of Jesus and obeying him.

I'm near Kansas City. We have one summer on the sand and we certainly lost some. We get a river running through it during heavy rains. Next step is to build a little retaining wall around the beach to divert the runoff from the yard. I think that will help a ton. We still have lots of sand though. I don't see us needing to add any for at least a few years.
