@Alessandro Villatoro they are amazing musicians already in my opinion :) I'm a soon to be music ed major and I can only hope and aspire to teach my students as well as these kids have clearly been taught
@@roosterslime9430 @Jonathan Mio He didn't even win honorable mention... Even if his solo is based off Ellington's it was performed extremely well and I think he should AT LEAST gotten honorable mention... Besides I've heard plenty of solos that are based on someone else's solo and they won outstanding. Bass should have gotten outstanding and Luca should have gotten honorable. I would be happy with that
@@roosterslime9430 I'm referring to your comment with the solo timestamps... It indicates that Luca didn't win anything. So you're saying the pianist actually did win an honorable mention?
I fr have no clue how they judge sometimes. There are times where I believe it’s accurate and there are times where I feel like people didn’t get enough credit. I’m not a jazz expert though, so idk how they judge musicality.
Awards are determined based on the first playing of the song, not the finals. In my opinion, this solo (the finals) is significantly better than the first time he played the solo.
I'm pretty darn sure, the lead Trombone player is Elliott Mason of Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra!! If I'm wrong is because I'm watching/listening on a Crappy phone 😄 And also didn't see the very beginning!!
@@umakarkala4131 both. they are all high schoolers, but they are the best of the best. some come from non high school programs but those groups have to have high school age participants =)
I Strongly Disagree, the Pianist is excellent, but Dan Nimmer, he's not!! But Damn they're all pro level, they sound similar to the famous Jazz band of Mt. Hood Community College of Oregon!!
Performance begins at 0:45
Thanks for this amazing video!
8:17 - 8:29
Is such a badass moment
The ii-V-I, the band hits and Elliot’s solo choices just make for an incredibly musical moment

Who got 1st place?
ABLAZE179 - I think it was Roosevelt.
@@jigjamz it was Dillard Center for the Arts (2018)
roosterslime4119 Oh my bad
but how the living hell did the bass only get an honorable mention award? If there was an award above outstanding, he would be the one to get it!
Refreshing to see such a diverse group of young talent!!
broooo that bass solo was so amazing
Bruh the bass amazing n all but that piano solo was otherworldly, how did he not win anything?
@Alessandro Villatoro they are amazing musicians already in my opinion :) I'm a soon to be music ed major and I can only hope and aspire to teach my students as well as these kids have clearly been taught
I guess it was based too much off of the Ellington solo

@@willmorris8198 my bad I thought u were referring to the bass player 😅😅 luca would win honorable mention next year
The guitarist is another Wes Montgomery in the making!! He's amazing!!
That was one wild trombone solo! Drums, bass and sax solos also top notch performance! 👏👏👏👍
I love the band director vibing at 6:55
2:05 to 2:15 *that* is some bass player there, son!
Woohh... what a performance !!
Award worthy!!
That trombone solo and the drum solo after holyyyyy
Brutal!!!!!! Elliot Mason 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Amazing performance!
Elliot Mason is killing
Shame on the judges who gave no extra credit to the bass player.
I fr have no clue how they judge sometimes. There are times where I believe it’s accurate and there are times where I feel like people didn’t get enough credit. I’m not a jazz expert though, so idk how they judge musicality.
I like the tenor solo quite a bit
the piano dude omg
So the bass didn’t get outstanding soloist award
That bs
Indeed
he's just a sophomore at this time which is just absolutely shocking
I agree ! Scandal !!!
tell me about it. smh

If you haven’t heard the Afro/Eurasian Eclipse, the album Chinoiserie comes from, TREAT YO’ Self !!!
I strongly agree!

It is him
He soloed with the band
I'm so confused on why the bass didn't get an outstanding
Me too !!! Scandal !
does the lead trumpet (during the trombone solo) really play a double b flat and a there
They're lead for a reason!
I don't think they go quite that high. Up to an F above the staff is the highest I heard.
Yea he probably played it but not loud enough to be heard he really needs to be louder than anyone else in the band basically all the time
My god that’s a lot of trumpets
Why did they turn their stands and have no music?
Andrew Nguyen extra points for memorizing music
@@williebowman3973you don’t get extra points it’s just a tradition
the trombonist Elliot Mason is also a part of the tommy dorsey band, he's insane, saw him live recently
Afro-Eurasian eclipse. Brilliant album.
Oh yes indeed!
Eliot: super senior.
Please tell me they won
They got second! First place was Dillard High School (FL) and third place was Tucson Jazz Institute (AZ).
Tucson jazz institute has been in the top 3 for the longest time. 😂i go there
@@eddyracine6944 does everyone there play music or is it normal highschoolers too?
Wooo allen
Did anyone else notice ben wendels “still play” at 1:26
so awesome! GO NA!
Very Ray Brown !
Yeah
These man are in a different level cannot lie
🤯😍👍❤

The trombone soloist looks like he's 40. Is this competition not for high schoolers?
The final bands get members of jlco to play with them. The great Elliot mason solo'd with them.
Elliot mason joined them for this one
Is this for hs students or for specifically picked students?
