This is a cover of a song written by Paul Simon of Simon and Garfunkel in the early 60's and more recently covered by Disturbed. Bass Matt Sallee joined the group in 2017 after the departure of much-loved bass Avi Kaplan who left the group to deal with a family health issue. There have been no other lineup changes; Kirsti Maldonado, tenor Mitch Grassi and baritone Scott Hoying met in school and Avi and vocal percussionist (and concert-level cellist) Kevin Olusola were recruited to compete in NBC's acapella competition program "The Sing Off". Spoiler alert: they won!
Kevin, the beatboxer, gets plenty of love. He’s a superb vocal percussionist but he’s also a classically trained cellist, (see Say Something), and speaks fluent Mandarin.
I really hope you read this comment. Kevin Olusola the beatboxer is actually one of the most talented members of the group. He actually plays multiple instruments at a world-class level. You should see them live! I’ve gone to eight shows, no instruments except when Kevin(the beatboxer) plays cello They’re so good, especially Kevin, that even when I’m watching them in concert, I forget there isn’t a backing track. Even while I watch him. He lasts 1 1/2hr , 4x week while on tour. He’s learned how to breathe while beatboxing to make it efficient He’s very unselfish. He could beatbox like a m m ad man BUT he chooses what sounds best for the song. Sometimes he goes off, sometimes he’s supporting. Very professional

Avi Kaplan with the beard who was the bass was part of the original five people in the group from 2011 to 2017. He left the group to go out on his own and was replaced by Matt Salee. This version is the version PTX is singing in a new arrangement. 2. The black guy singing bass is Matt Sallee. He came in in 2017 to replace Avi Kaplan, who stepped away for family and personal reasons. He's still close with everyone in PTX, no burned bridges in any way, very amicable. He even found his replacement in Matt.

Re changes in the group members: This was a few years after Hallelujah. As others have explained, bass Avi Kaplan departed in 2017 and was replaced by Matt Sallee (white jacket). Mitch Grassi, who solos second (shorter than blond Scott and beatboxer Kevin, dark hair in a mullet), changed immensely in appearance over the years: some of it is just his increasing flair for out-there fashion, some of it is just natural changes of age from early to mid-20s. ETA: For originals, try Sing, Can't Sleep Love, Coffee in Bed, and Love Me When I Don't.

Their most recent album was one of the originals - The Lucky Ones [Deluxe]. The thing to know, though, is that the newest songs don't follow their old rules (only arrange songs they can sing live and no instruments) so I don't feel like they're the best place to start. It's good to see where they came from first and get all the proof of what they can do before getting into the rule-breaking experimental stuff. That's my opinion. Love Again, Can't Sleep Love and Run To You still stand out as great originals to break your teeth on.
Kristin changes her hair color often which is why you don't recognize her. The beatboxer, Kevin, is a Yale graduate who majored in classical music. He plays the cello, piano and drums. He has an awesome ear and can mimic their sounds. Genius!

Because of them I have gone from strictly country music to now rap, pop, and recently Kpop so they have opened the gates on all genres of music for me! Try the new BTS mashup (Butter x Dynamite) for something fun. They have 2 original albums and just dropped new original tracks 2 weeks ago (no video for the new ones yet but Petals is OMG🔥!!). My fav originals: Can’t Sleep Love and Sing (from first album w/Avi) Coffee in Bed (new album w/Matt) Awesome covers with Matt include: Havana, Amazing Grace, Can You Feel The Love Tonight, New Rules x Are You That Somebody, Attention Then there’s the whole classics album with original bass Avi: Bohemian Rhapsody, Imagine, Gold (different album) Haven’t even touched the old, old stuff (Problem is a bop) or all the Christmas stuff (That’s Christmas to Me - an original that is so warm and beautiful)…or the side projects. Lol…it’s a lot! They are a phenomenal group…and yes, if you don’t see an instrument then it’s all a cappella. Studio releases are augmented with mixing, reverb, mild tuning for polish…but they were strict to not create anything they couldn’t reproduce in concert. They are starting to expand and add more production/layering to create new sounds with the new music. I think they’ve been afraid to experiment because being strictly a cappella was their signature and the fan base was built on that, but its lovely to see them branching out and new sound is amazing!! 🌻

I'm in my early 70's age wise( I remember when Simon and Garfunkel released this song lol) but anyways I have been watching this group since back when they competed on the show The Sing Off, so like 10 years. Because of them I have gone from strictly country music to now rap, pop, and recently Kpop so they have opened the gates on all genres of music for me! They are a phenomenal group…and yes, if you don’t see an instrument then it’s all a cappella. Studio releases are augmented with mixing, reverb, mild tuning for polish…but they were strict to not create anything they couldn’t reproduce in concert. They are starting to expand and add more production/layering to create new sounds with the new music. I think they’ve been afraid to experiment because being strictly a cappella was their signature and the fan base was built on that, but its lovely to see them branching out and new sound is amazing!! 🌻
