- En liten tur med en gammal öppen fiskebåt i Bohuslän, båten har en Hundested tändkulemotor på 39 hästkrafter.
Vi får här se ägaren starta motorn och senare även stoppa den. Detta är inte min båt.
A little trip in a fishingboat. This boat has a Hundested hotbulb engine, the
engine makes 39 hp and sounds very nice.
This is not my boat, it´s the owner who starts
the engine :)
I'm 47 years old..... American.... and I have never seen or heard of one of these engines until just now seeing this and one other video. Life is fantastic... you can learn something cool and new like this every once in a while that is so impressive ! And yes..... I'm very impressed. I have got to learn more about this engine. Very nice boat as well...... Thanks for sharing this video
Bill, depending on where you live, try to go to an old engine show/swap meet or an old West Texas oil field and find an Ajax engine. I'm on North Dakota and there are some remote oil well sites that still use them.

I could draw a lot of attention on lake Erie with a vessel like this. The coast guard would most likely stop me just to get a look at it. So cool. I come back to this video from time to time. I pray there is never a time where these engines are outlawed. They should be enjoyed for generations to come.

Good lord.. 8 years old but I'm still answering this comment. It's because these engines put out quite a heavy "bass" beat. You can't help but physically respond to the sound.

My grandpa had a Fishing boat With the same sound, a lot bigger boat tho, Reia whas the name of it. I never forgett the day we wen't on a boat trip, and we slept over in the boat, had this cabin stateroom, 4 beds, 2 on each side one bottom one upper, and a small table you did pull out i never forget that trip, He ment so much to me :'( couldn't even bear to be in the Church :'(
I love memories like that.
Kevin, i missed out on my life between 18 and 23 the years when you are supposed to have fun, because of that, mental Health care center several times because of that, and other stuff something just said BOOM in my brain and my schitzophrenia whas activated, whas diagnosed when i a whas little, but he said it we're no biggie unless something triggered it, and i now, struggle With epilepsy, and schitzophrenia, and Reading problems and disabilities because of it, it took a great hit on my that my grandpa drowned.... i can't bare to see a man that is Close to look like grandpa & hear him talk kevin, happened last week, now i sit in fear it will trigger again.... i don't love memmories like this... i just want him back, and i sit by rehab talking to doctors about , well not a rehab but, talking to specialist's who are specialised in talking to People With problems.
Thank you :)) Yes we have to take care of our ears because we have only two of them :)) There was a fishingwessel that had a Detroit V12 here for some years ago. It sounds a lot when they speed up the engine, but there was also a lot of power :))

Starting sounds easy, it's shutting them down is the hard part.
Most boats have a fuel-cut switch for these engines. You cut the fuel and oxygen, the engine dies.
true, my grandfather worked on a old logging boat hauling logs across Lake Superior, he used to sleep beside (on a little bed made from boards) a modified Detroit Diesel 6-71 screaming away at about 2900RPM, with no earplugs. same with me for shooting i grew up shooting guns and the gunshots just dont bother my ears, while other people feal like their heads are poping after each shot. you have a nice day also =) and awsome video.

There is an old fishing boat, made in my home city in 1896 as a sailing vessel. Today it has a 3 cyl B&W 'Alpha' engine but it's first engine was a Hundested, which it received in the 1920's. As it is much larger than this vessel I am assuming the engine was a two-cylinder unit.
Did they use those 'fireworks' in the 1920's as well?
I take it that their function is to heat the incoming charge of air and make it easier to start. Similar to a electric glow-plug in effect?
Hello :) From the beginning they use kerosene burner to preheat the engine. Maybe they had other ways to, but this was a simple way the heat it up. Yes you are right it´s the same thing like a glow plug does :)
Almost smacks his head at 1:01. He's got the technique for avoiding it that come from having done it a few times before.

in my part of the world we haqd big 4 cyl engines in our vessels sometimes 6 or 8 cyl too, but a single cylinder? fantastic and simple a great idea.

Nice video, but could someone tell me why you never see a muffler on these engines? I'd hate to go out fishing with that thing blasting my eardrums for eight hours or longer!
hermoso barco, si mi abuelo contaba que calentaban en las brasas un fierro, y cuando estaba al rojo, se enroscaba rápido antes que se enfrie, y se le daba manilla. arrancaba de inmediato. estupendo haberlo encontrado aquí, Gracias!!!

@NJPurling Hello :) There is no gearbox, only a clutch between the engine and the shaft.
The boat has a variable pitch propeller.

Is there a gearbox between the engine & propeller, or is it a direct reverse?
Some engines the fuel spray event is changed so the engine re-starts & rotates in the opposite direction.

You know, earlier they never used ear protection in the industry or in engine rooms.. You can get used to bad noise, but now everyone knows that high noise levels will damage your ears. In this case it´s possible to wear ear protection. Have a nice day :))

@MrWildstaren1 Ja, det borde ju gå att ta reda på här på nätet, men jag vet att patronerna innehåller bland annat svavel. Teddens agenturer i Göteborg säljer ju delar till Skandia tändkulor, han kanske har receptet :) Annars är det som sagt glödstift eller blåslampa som gäller. Lycka till.

Man skal akta at motoren ikke går meget langt ned i omdrejninger. Så kan den veksle retning lige pludselig :D.

ingen orsak. Detsamma och morfar min eller hade en båt med en Säffle tänd-kula motor på 40 hk i. Den är nu mera såld.

När upphörde Hundested att tillverka tändkulemotorn? Är det någon här som vet? Den som finns här i TH-cam någonstans är tillverkad 1969.
Viktoria Mattsson Hundested laget den siste motoren tidlig på 90 tallet. I Norge er det en 29 hk som er fra 1987. Min egen motor, en 39 hk, er fra 1970.
Hej! Vad kul att någon kunde svara, jag har undrat så länge över hur länge tändkulemotorn hängde med. Har alltid hört och läst att den blev ut konkurrerad av modernare motorer i slutet av 1960 talet.

It sounds like a single cylinder but there is some part visible that looks like a six cylinder injection pump.

Those lines, I believe, are oil lines not injector lines. Towards the end of the video you can see the main injector line above the lubricator that supplies lubrication at different points on the cylinder and internals. Plus the vibration is the real give away. Every time that piston fired it shakes the entire vessel.
Yes I think you mean the lubrication pumps with integrated oil tank :)
One pump/ pipe for every parts of the engine who needs lubrication

något har man ju snappat upp men jag är ingen expert på tändkule motorer. Morfar är mer kunnig på tändkule motorer än vad jag är.
