i have participated in a performance of this wonderful Opera in 1987, Paradiso Amsterdam, with Sam ten Velden conducting. As a 23 year old student, it was one of my first experiences with classical music. Isn't it wonderful, and isn't it a BIG compliment to this composition how I remember many lines, many harmonies, and many texts even after 35 years? The storyline is involving, the music has this curious quality of being both captivating and unsettling.
"Es ändert sich nicht der Mensch; es sind die Verhältnisse, die seine Haltung verändern". How true is this, when we see ourselves drawn into a war (in the Ukraine) with many young dead people already, and a potential for another World War, in the first decades of the 21st century?
