I was very lucky and was able to buy my fathers 1992 Mitsubishi GTO (one of the few real ones outside of Japan) and Ive been able to drive many cars such as the Rx7 and R33 Skyline. However I personally prefer the GTO more, not just because it is speed and looks but because of its weight. It is a heavy car but it just feels more powerful and a lot cleaner when it maneuvers. Especially with the Vr4 and all wheel turning.
I used to own the 3000GT VR-4 Twin Turbo from 1992. It was one fast car, I tell you. I miss having this car...shouldn't have sold it. Looked exactly like the one in the video. Even from the inside. The only difference was: mine was all black, with a few modifications.
Eleanor Mountaindaughter I have an elderly friend whom I am helping do a rebuild of a red 1994 3000GT VR4. The interior is still cherry. Did some serious repairs to the rear driver side, about to sand, paint, and put the new hood on. I am so excited to get it on the highway
LoL... Fav quotes: "On Economy it freezes Mercury, on full A/C it can give you hypothermia... ohh my god turn it off!" -- "And on the subject of four... Four Seats!... Well, sort of"
Its so hard to choose. Both have that iconic look. Both have pop-up headlights. Both have a sexy rear tailight. Both have raw power. And both have something completely different from one another.
+LifeGiven not gonna lie, I been rebuilding it since I got it. the car is extremely reliable and easy to fix, and the parts are super cheap for the specific car, any year the 3k is.
+LifeGiven cheap. they have a few miles on them give or take because they are fun as hell, I got mine for 650 with 134xxx on it. my car has been a rebuild since I first got it from the guy who gave no love to it.
If it is a running vehicle and the body is in good shape I say buy it. I got a 91 Stealth Twin Turbo for $1,000 but it has rod knock. If it runs for $2,000 that's a solid deal.
If people say Ferraris are unreliable or however it's worded, then the RX-7 was worse. Coming from someone who owned one these cars were terds when it came to build quality and I mean bad. From the interior to the engine things just broke a lot. I can't tell you how many fellow owners had to replace their engines. The ones who didn't had to do the preventative maintenance and replace the vacuum hoses, radiator, etc. just so the car would function. That said, when the car was running it ran really good and was a blast to drive. I just with Mazda would have got it together with these cars and bumped up the quality. It was really pathetic. You would've had to have owned one to understand what I'm talking about.
+jpratx there was nothing wrong with rx7 when they were brand new its the fact that people didnt understand how to maintain it properly and they still dont with the rx8's
Need advice. I have a 2000 Mustang GT and a friend is selling his 3000GT VR-4. Should I get parts for the Mustang or buy the Mitsubishi? He's only selling it for $2,000 and that's with his 'homie discount'..
Ahh... We have the GTO right now, and it's very fast indeed... We have the 95 version, and although Clarkson said that it's a problem in Urban traffic, we live in the countryside so that issue is lifted, thank goodness :D I would recommend you to give the car a test drive if you ever have the chance to :P
@heylol256 i said I had '97 vr4. the one in the video is a '93 (first gen). they look a little different but pretty much the same. and all year vr4's have 4w steering. '97 was the first year they took off the active aero features (in the u.s.)
do u think its worth getting a vr4 w/ 66k miles on it everything is good, mostly stock but has a hairline crack in the rear plate of the trann..... for 10k???
I also had that gen mustang. back in those days, you could throw 2 turbos on any v6 but it still wont throw your ass in the seat like a stock 5.0 mustang. what a pathetic era huh. you have to admit, the foxbody 5.0 mustang gave us hope. No replacement for displacement
DRI UnknownAlias owned a 1996 Cobra, which would shitstomp a Foxbody stock for stock, and a Vr4 is leaps and bounds beyond that. Your pops made a bad decision.
Questions to consider: 1. Was the 3000GT, Toyota Supra's, and RX-7's for the young wealthy Gentlemans who were looking for a sports car? Did they know about the car before buying them? 2. The price was the same as a corvette which was a powerhouse car in America. Was there such thing as research or shopping around back then? 3. Or can a kid back then afford a car like this saving up? How do you get involved with pre-orders and manufacturing? 4. How did they end up out in the market? Did they sit a while at the dealership gradually losing value? 5. What are the consensus and statistics on the sale of these cars?
2000 is a steal for a vr-4. If if its your "homie" thats to good to be true for a good running solid stock car. I just bought a 91 with 36k miles with a 80k 93 4 bolt motor and dr650 turbos for 4800....the catch, it has rebuilt title. Couldnt tell it was wrecked though, no rust, perfect cloth(rare) interior.
I don't mean to sound cocky, but my first car is my 1994 3000GT. It's not the VR-4, but I've never had problems with it, the car just turned 30 this year, it's mostly the exterior and upholstery tearing on the vehicle, and get this, timing belt. The car only has 66,000 miles on it, I still doubt if I should've made this purchase or went for something I felt would be more reliable like a Honda or a Toyota, but I've yet to have problems with the car, also it has an automatic transmission, save the worst information for last.
I'd take the 3000GT. If it has less than 230,000 miles, and if he maintained it well, you're stupid NOT to take it. It should get about 25-27mpg highway, and 17-19 city, with AWD and 320hp.
For track duty... RX7 Hands down, The 3000GT is a PIG. With the rotary although sometimes finicky, are very reliably for track duty if they are properly taken care of. The 8k of revs really helps you find a suitable gear easier in both large and small tracks. You also have ALOT of room in the engine bay for larger engines if you see fit vs the ZxA platform where there isnt even space to fart. I know they will always carry a presence but to run competitive times Ill stick with the RX7.
Depends on the conditions of both the vr4 and the mustang. I love my 3000gt and VR4's (mine is just the base model, 1992) but you have to consider a few things like the mileage and reliability of both cars. If the VR4 has similar miles to your mustang id say go for it, they are a hell of a ride and you dont see them everyday meanwhile everyone and their mother has a mustang. Just be careful, those turbos dont take care of themselves and it may or may not be as reliable as our mustang.
I just bought 3000gt I trade an upgraded drift eclipse for it and I have no complaints it's fast and is a nice and powerful car and where I live there only 9 including mine and people always stop and ask about it
3000gt actually has 320 in 94' which was it's prime. I personally wanna take my one with bent valves which is a base model and put in a vr-4 motor so that I have all the power of a vr-4 and not the weight of the awd system.
The most hilarious part?Collision on the Rx7 will hurt that light little car pretty bad (though i love it). You hit that VR4, its a bad day... for whatever hit it.
That's no 1997 3000GT like the uploader says, it's most likely a 1993 as well bc it still has flip up lights and active aero. I forget when/or if they got rid of it but i believe the 1997 didn't have 4w steering. I like the vid tho. ty for the upload
What year vr4? Mileage? I love my vr4 but keep in mind if it needs a rebuild it might be difficult finding a place to work on it (depending on where you live). There are risks with any car. With that said i'd pick the vr4 simply because it's way more rare then a mustang. That's just my opinion.
Actually that's not entirely true. The 3000gt standard model is listed at 220hp so you are not far off there, but the VR4 from 91 to 93 had only about 300 hp later upgrading to 320hp in years 94+. Also be aware that there is a model around first release named Mitsubishi GTO (3000gt). Though it was a 3000gt it only had just about 280hp. 3000gt are awesome cars, I used to own an sl model, but if your looking to buy get a VR4!
I would rather have the VR4. RX7s were never very reliable or robust and their handling benefits would really only be accessible on a racetrack. The Mitsu was a hugely heavy car but compared to the Mazda it rode like a Caddy and the AWD traction made it not useless in winter.
Let's go through the real cons of both cars here, the vr4 is almost flawless, but its just so damn heavy. The rx-7 is a rotary, and unless it is THOROUGHLY maintained, it will blow up. Is go with a vr4 since the rx7 is a risky buy since there's no telling how it was taken care of.
The first time was me running the car hard for thousands of miles! (40K miles continuously dropping the clutch from redline) lol The second time was because it wasn't rebuilt right.
3000gt's are hybrid american & japanese dodge stealths are exactly 100% the same just as eclipse gst's & gsx's were the same to Eagle Talon TSI's and Plymouth Laser rt's. DSM or Diamond Star Motors was 50/50 joint operation of chrysler and mitsubishi. eclipses, talons, and lasers came from the same factory which is located in Normal Illinois.
It sounds worth it because it's hard to find a VR-4 with low mileage. But that guy probably ran that car hard. And fyi i've blown my tranny twice and it cost me $2,000 each time to rebuild it.
@louevilmetalhead Still the car did not sell all that well. For the price you could buy a nicer & better performing 300zx or Supra. I do miss my '87 Rx-7. When it ran well........
he forgot to mention about how hard it is to turn if you need to push you clutch as you hand hits your fucking leg then you got 2mm leg distance in the back in the gto and if you have a problem under the hood you can't get to any bolts as theres no space had two gtos one was Road legal other was tuned and used as track car also if you go over 130 the plastic interior rattles like a bag of nails lol
Long live the 90s Japanese cars 3000gts, rx7s, supras, 300zxs and of course skylines
music notes mx5s too
music notes and miatas
But not the R34. It sucks.
you forgot NSX
@@xalataf3365 it doesn't
my left ear enjoyed this
Swap your headphone around if you want a change.
XD why this?
😂

Bryce Stevenson heavier means it's a beast in the snow, too! Couple that with awd, and you're good!
I've have had the 3000gto turbo 2 car for 8 years never missed a beat ,very reliable car i use it for work and play.
I used to own the 3000GT VR-4 Twin Turbo from 1992. It was one fast car, I tell you. I miss having this car...shouldn't have sold it. Looked exactly like the one in the video. Even from the inside. The only difference was: mine was all black, with a few modifications.
Aw man you really shouldn't have sold it. I agree.

Buy it again, i bought a stealth rt and am now selling my sedan to get a mitsubishi gto. And ive only just turned 20
LoL... Fav quotes: "On Economy it freezes Mercury, on full A/C it can give you hypothermia... ohh my god turn it off!" -- "And on the subject of four... Four Seats!... Well, sort of"
The 3000gt vr4 much better and much more beautiful
I completely agree with you
Its so hard to choose. Both have that iconic look. Both have pop-up headlights. Both have a sexy rear tailight. Both have raw power. And both have something completely different from one another.
I just bought myself a 91 3000GT today, it's such a fun car lol
+LifeGiven not gonna lie, I been rebuilding it since I got it. the car is extremely reliable and easy to fix, and the parts are super cheap for the specific car, any year the 3k is.
+LifeGiven cheap. they have a few miles on them give or take because they are fun as hell, I got mine for 650 with 134xxx on it. my car has been a rebuild since I first got it from the guy who gave no love to it.
+Rustlin' Bustlin but usually they go for around 1-4k on average
+LifeGiven I am assuming you live in Canada, right?
+LifeGiven insane man, if you can find one there at a reasonable price, you will be golden
If it is a running vehicle and the body is in good shape I say buy it. I got a 91 Stealth Twin Turbo for $1,000 but it has rod knock. If it runs for $2,000 that's a solid deal.
owning a GTO is a bucket list of mine...
reyasem please do! I'm gonna buy one and hopefully it'll be a second gen or first gen so I can at least have one dream car I've owned in my life..
haha I have one XD
reyasem I have a 95 and I love it, it is fast as hell
The first gen's had 280hp in Japan and europe got the jdm version. The first gen U.S. version had 300hp. '94 and up had 320hp.
The GTO is more of a gran tourer while the Mazda is more of a track car.
Lol but the the gto is faster and better handling
Jose ricotaconachoquesadillamandillajones Not exactly true but I own both they are all good in different areas
The rx7 looks way better in life, rather than in the computer. I'm 18 and I drive one to school!
Do you still have your rx7 9 years later
@heylol256 '94 is when they scrapped the flip ups and made a few changes with the interior.
Back in the day quiet 281hp cars pleased Jeremy now days it's the opposite of that loud and lots of hp lmao
If people say Ferraris are unreliable or however it's worded, then the RX-7 was worse. Coming from someone who owned one these cars were terds when it came to build quality and I mean bad. Driven a 3000 GT for 17 years, Never get tired of driving it . Not only are they fast @ 200k miles they still pack a punch.
@KsHoOt3r7 you can get clean ones for 6-8 depending on year.
@heylol256 i said I had '97 vr4. the one in the video is a '93 (first gen). they look a little different but pretty much the same. and all year vr4's have 4w steering. '97 was the first year they took off the active aero features (in the u.s.)
Just purchased a 1993 gto twin turbo. Wants some engine work. Cant wait til its back on the road.
do u think its worth getting a vr4 w/ 66k miles on it everything is good, mostly stock but has a hairline crack in the rear plate of the trann..... for 10k???
My pops had a twin 3000gt when I was a kid. Was a bad ass little car. But sold it n got a 1990 5.0 mustange that as much faster.
DRI UnknownAlias the 3000gt is worth more today than the 1990 mustang i think.
DRI UnknownAlias owned a 1996 Cobra, which would shitstomp a Foxbody stock for stock, and a Vr4 is leaps and bounds beyond that. Your pops made a bad decision.
I love how back then cruise control and ac were considered toys. My how times change.

its true the 3000GT's AC is ridiculously cold
Top gear guys! You've tested all the rare Mitsubishis. But,I think you've forgotten one. That's the mitsubishi cordia!!!
I picked a 3kGT... though it's more because there was one available. I'd rock an FD in a heartbeat.
2000 is a steal for a vr-4. If if its your "homie" thats to good to be true for a good running solid stock car. Was this filmed with a Polaroid camera made into a flip book?
I don't mean to sound cocky, but my first car is my 1994 3000GT. nope mate the mr also comes with turbos .
In this video is the twin turno version look the intecooler pipes
sl was the basic model with no turbos
Both of my dream cars *tears

I just got a black 97 3000GT SL and I love it to death. I bet the VR4 is 10x more awesome.
That Mazda RX-7 still looks great.
That was in '93. Sticker price on my '97 was $45,500.
Does Jeremy have a mullet?
This is a tough decision. I'd have both. The Mitsu as my everyday car and the RX-7 as my weekend machine.
Depends on the conditions of both the vr4 and the mustang. What year is this of the Top Gear please. Clarkson looks young LOL
i would kill to have that HVAC control panel...
3000gt actually has 320 in 94' which was it's prime. I personally wanna take my one with bent valves which is a base model and put in a vr-4 motor so that I have all the power of a vr-4 and not the weight of the awd system.
Both cars are amazing! I love Clarkson's 90's mullet, too! Lol
God Jeremy had hair at one point...hard to imagine.
The most hilarious part?Collision on the Rx7 will hurt that light little car pretty bad (though i love it). You hit that VR4, its a bad day... for whatever hit it.
@IGranturismo false. ford probes are made by mazda. i had a gt. said right on the door jam.
thats a 1g 3000gt u can tell by tha wing. a 1g vr4's always and will always be my dream car although tha evo viii is pretty close at running.
Been thinking about getting a 3000GT 99' for years.
Miss these cars...3000GT VR4, RX7 Turbo and Supra TT :(
I have this one but mine is silver
Now both are worth more then a brand new car. You had to buy them at 1995-2005 to get them for cheap.
The mitsubishi 3000 GTO was ahead of this time
That's no 1997 3000GT like the uploader says, it's most likely a 1993 as well bc it still has flip up lights and active aero. I forget when/or if they got rid of it but i believe the 1997 didn't have 4w steering. I like the vid tho. ty for the upload
J'aurais bien voulu voir l'épisode en entier , et en Français
kinda unrelated but does anyone know if the galant gsx awd non turbo is 4ws?
i miss these cars. wish they would remake them
Hey, where's the end of the video where he says "I'll take the Mitsubishi"
What year vr4? Mileage? I love my vr4 but keep in mind if it needs a rebuild it might be difficult finding a place to work on it (depending on where you live). There are risks with any car. With that said i'd pick the vr4 simply because it's way more rare then a mustang. That's just my opinion.
"Wankel Rotary Unit"
Oh that's dirty.
Can't believe I never saw this clip! I love both but I would go with the RX7 anyday. It's prettier and more fun to drive. I imagine anyway ;)
Ian Thompson no the 3000gt is faster for sure, I own a 95 and it’s a beast
@WestsideCorpes. That's cool, I just prefer the way the 3000GT looks.. For some reason I don't find the RX-7 as appealing as it is for others.
vr4 with black rims and not red and i love it
Actually that's not entirely true. The 3000gt standard model is listed at 220hp so you are not far off there, but the VR4 from 91 to 93 had only about 300 hp later upgrading to 320hp in years 94+. love the subtitles, BTW - who made those?
what year was this show on air
Probably '95, or '96 at the latest.
must be 93
Interesting never knew the vr4 had retractable aero parts
the registration plate starts with a 'J' so im guessing its a 92/93 too
I would rather have the VR4. RX7s were never very reliable or robust and their handling benefits would really only be accessible on a racetrack. The Mitsu was a hugely heavy car but compared to the Mazda it rode like a Caddy and the AWD traction made it not useless in winter.
late reply but rx7 is reliable u just got to take car of the apex seals just because its a rotary doesn't mean its unreliable.
the all wheel drive drivetrain is way more understeerie than rwds and fwds.
RIP George Michael :-(
I mean I have Mitsubishi 3000GTO twin turbo but mine is silver
check out the ford probe also ;) its actually a nissan
Let's go through the real cons of both cars here, the vr4 is almost flawless, but its just so damn heavy. The rx-7 is a rotary, and unless it is THOROUGHLY maintained, it will blow up. Is go with a vr4 since the rx7 is a risky buy since there's no telling how it was taken care of.

3000 gt is not dsm car the eclipse is dsm car
Jeramy look funny with his hair old skol love top gear!!!!
When TopGear were doing actual reviews
jeremey had hair ....lol ... love sum top gear
Might as well buy them both.
This would be great in more than 4 pixels
It sounds worth it because it's hard to find a VR-4 with low mileage. But that guy probably ran that car hard. And fyi i've blown my tranny twice and it cost me $2,000 each time to rebuild it.
Wow vhs back in the day looked great, but now looks like watch the tele through a bathroom window
If he knew how complicated that twin turbo system was he wouldn't be calling it basic
is that your fault the trans broke or are they just a poorly built and weak trans?
rx7 twin turbo is my dream car, no joke..
My vote is for the lead sled in red
I love the VR-4. I have had three. I prefer the 1994 VR-4.
the guy from topgear looks so vintage:)
Amazing Cars love old top gear
My right ear is slowly dieing from this video
Why do people always have to fucking fight?
Both are amazing in their own way, no need to favor one both are beasts.
I miss flip lights
@heylol256 your right it is 92-93 the whole body and interior is exactly what my friends looked like.
@SoPlEoReD Thats because you haven't seen mine lol but i dnt blame you. gotta luv vr-4s!!
this is really hard choice to be honest.. but i'll go for 3000GT
