The relationship between incorrect lawnmower spark plugs and their impact on the ignition coil is a topic that may not be widely understood but is indeed fascinating and surprising. To grasp this concept, it's essential to delve into the intricate workings of a lawnmower's ignition system and how it relies on a harmonious interplay of components.
Firstly, the ignition coil plays a crucial role in the lawnmower's engine by generating the high-voltage electrical pulse required to ignite the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. It essentially transforms the low-voltage power from the lawnmower's battery into a high-voltage spark, which is then delivered to the spark plug.
The spark plug, on the other hand, is responsible for igniting this air-fuel mixture within the engine's cylinder. It does so by creating a spark across the gap between its electrodes. This spark must be of the right intensity and duration to ensure proper combustion, optimal engine performance, and minimal emissions.
Now, here's where the unexpected connection between spark plugs and ignition coils comes into play. An incorrect spark plug can have a significant impact on the spark it generates. If the spark plug's specifications, such as the gap distance or heat range, are not aligned with the lawnmower's engine requirements, several issues can arise:
Spark Intensity: The spark plug's gap affects the intensity of the spark. If the gap is too wide, the spark may be weaker, leading to incomplete combustion. Conversely, if the gap is too narrow, it can result in a spark that's too intense, potentially damaging the ignition coil by overloading it.
Spark Duration: The spark plug's heat range influences how long the spark lasts. An incorrect heat range can lead to a spark that's too brief or too prolonged. A shorter spark duration might not ignite the air-fuel mixture effectively, causing misfires and poor engine performance. Conversely, an excessively long spark duration could generate excess heat and strain on the ignition coil.
Compatibility: Different engines require specific spark plugs that match their design and operating conditions. Using an incompatible spark plug can lead to misalignment with the ignition coil's capabilities, resulting in suboptimal ignition performance.
In essence, when an incorrect spark plug is introduced into the equation, it disrupts the delicate balance within the ignition system. This can lead to subpar combustion, reduced engine efficiency, increased emissions, and even potential damage to the ignition coil.
Understanding this relationship between spark plugs and ignition coils underscores the importance of using the right spark plug for your lawnmower or any small engine. It's not just about having the right part; it's about ensuring that all components work together harmoniously to keep your lawnmower running smoothly. Knowledge, in this context, truly becomes a powerful tool for maintaining and repairing small engines effectively.

So, whether you are using a Riding lawn mower, Push mower, Petrol lawnmower or even an electric lawn mower, this principle is valid. Also true whether your mower has either a 4 Stroke Engine or a 2 Stroke Engine. The Robot Lawn mower doesn't escape this principle either!

Craig, I love your channel, I really need some advice on tuning a carburetor on a 2 stroke outboard motor and no one has a decent well explained video like yours. It looks like it could be a great video that only you can do properly!!

Occaissionally, the metal clip in the high tension wire, that attaches to the spark plug, can be bent or loose, weak from age, and can cause problems - especially when the mower is running and vibrating a lot. You can carefully bend the contcats inward a bit, so it clips more securely to the spark plug.
Also, if you suspect the high tension wire, you can wrap it in a few layers of teflon tape - like a plumber uses on pipe threads - just to see if the mower runs any better or even well, then if it does, you can replace the wire. Sometimes that works as a temporary fix in a pinch, even on cars.

Lilely cause of smoke: piston blowby with root cause being that the wrong plug was used.
You want the right plug. And likely a new engine.
    Hope the latter not necessary.

Craig, do you believe the the opposite would be true? For example, some experienced automotive mechanics hold that with wear the spark plug gap increases and this stresses the coil to jump the larger gap causing coil failure. If they and you hold greater strain on the coil leads to premature failure of the coil, would less resistance prolong coil life? I ohm out my spark plugs and have found new plugs with over 30,000 ohms of resistance through the center electrode. I returned them. All other things being equal, a spark plug identical in every way except with very little resistance through the center electrode would lessen demand on the coil, keep it cooler, and prolong the coil life? Or, would too little resistance have an adverse effect on the ignition system in some way? Thanks for your videos!
