Father MOMOTARO ♂(2000/7/3)
He is hesitant in new situations and is a loner.
His father died before he was born, and he had never spent time with a silverback.
He had already turned into a silverback by the time he was 10 years old.
He is struggling with unfamiliar child-rearing.
MOMOTARO's father is BIJU.
MOMOTARO's mother is MOMOKO
Mother GENKI ♀ (1986/6/24)
She is 14 years older than Momotaro and has a role to support the whole family mentally.
She has had a tumultuous and eventful life.
She has returned to her birthplace, Kyoto City Zoo.
She had never been blessed with a baby but after meeting Momotaro,
she had two sons.
She is a very maternal female gorilla.
GENKI's father is MAKK.
GENKI's mother is HIROMI.
First son GENTARO, male (2011/12/21)
He was separated from his mother Genki soon after he was born.
Genki's milk production was not very good.
He was raised by his keeper for his first10 months.
Because of this, he is very fond of humans.
His face is so expressive, and everyone enjoys watching him.
Second son KINTARO ♂ (2018/12/19)
He is just very strong-willed and independent.
He has big eyes and long eyebrows.
The way he plays a lot with his brother Gentaro makes everyone smile.
We can't wait to see what kind of gorilla he'll become!

Maybe if no zoo will give Gentaro a family of his own...there may be a semi wild preserve somewhere?
I understand this is a big task. Gentaro is a very special silverback. We have watched him grow up from being bottle fed. He is a beautiful silver back. I want him to have the best and happiest adult gorilla life. We all can visibly see his frustration increasing. I pray something is done so that no one gets hurt. Keep praying. 🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼 THANK you for keeping us informed.
He is not yet a silverback. He is still a blackback with two or three years left to go before he becomes a silverback.

That would be wonderful if Gentaro can safely come to the USA. He is a Star and so loved already here. I hope it’s True he is being thought of to come here to US .
It would be a very difficult trip for any Gorilla from Japan to USA and then find out he is not compatible with the females. Gentaro is exceptional example of a young Silverback. We will keep praying someone realizes what beautiful babies he could make with a compatible mate! He deserves a good home with good surroundings. He is a very good boy! 🥹

I really hope some zoo takes this gorgeous gorilla! Please any zoo that is watching please consider taking him. He really needs his own troop! He would be such a great partner for anther female gorilla! I’m praying some zoo takes him. ❤❤
It’s got to be a matter of cost. Gorilla physical checkup, travel and accommodations must be extremely expensive to maintain. But the Japan zoo must find a suitable place for Gentaro and a better habitat for the rest of the troop.

Gentaro is so handsome and well mannered. I don't know how anyone could resist him! Have you tried the Philadelphia Zoo in the state of Pennsylvania in the United States? Thats where I live, and I know they have Gorillas there. I DO think that Kyoto Zoo should build a new habitat for Gentaro. So many people LOVE him from Japan as well as all over the world thanks to your wonderful videos that you have been posting. I have been watching since Kintaro was born which is 6 years. How time have passed so quickly. I love the whole family.

No we have not
Gentaro will make an amazing silverback to another troop. He is at the age to go off and find his own family to start. The silverback at Franklin Park Zoo, Kitombe, in Boston passed in late December at the age of 38 due to medical issues hence why they may be inquiring. Also the San Antonio Zoo in Texas is opening a new state of the art gorilla habitat with room for 8 gorillas so I think he would be a great fit there as well. It will be interesting to see the future of this family.
Good to see him more settled than he has been. Fingers crossed there is a future for him ❤

I think this is a problem that Japan never considered when they decided to put Gorillas in their zoos. I think Japan needs to solve this dilemma within it own zoos and country. I think the shipping of a grown gorilla to far away locations is very bad experience for the animal. I think the zoo needs to make the accommodations for Gentaro and future for Kintaro too.
If is this difficult to find mate for Gentaro, it will be that much harder for Kintaro.❤
@@LindaMetz-yp5he Sadly that is true. Kiyo is the odd man out in Japan and with Japan having minimal trading partners his long range options are limited. Like a bachelor troop somewhere which would be a shame but they cant leave him with Shabani. It unnatural and not right.
There are great gorilla exhibits in Japan. The problem is the lack of planning, imagination an future care at the Kyoto zoo. They failed their boy Gentaro and will fail Kintaro unless someone there gets a clue.

Has anyone who is French speaking tried to contact Zoo du Bassin d'Arcachon, France? They have a bachelor group. It's where Lope went when he was too old to remain with his family of origin at Twycross Zoo in UK. Lope is about the same age as Gentaro.

There is that pesky AZA I mentioned in a previous comment. American Zoo's operate under its jurisdiction and wont do exchanges with non-member zoos. It would be helpful to talk with Kyoto Zoo about becoming AZA certified. I believe it will open doors where they are closed without it. Keep spreading the word Ryan, it can only help. Best of luck.

The zoo has room to grow, they need strong backers to help. I'm curious how that works in Japan. There has to be some deep pockets in Kyoto who would love to see a larger facility and 2 families of gorillas in their city. But this should have started years ago when Gentaro was young. I'm very amazed that there were no plans in place.
I live maybe about an hour an hour and a half away from Franklin Park zoo. I went there for the first time in November 2024 just to go see the gorillas. It was my first time there. I believe there are gorillas in a zoo in Southern Connecticut. I will do some research and call them, if I am correct.

There used to be three half Brothers there and they moved them after 20 years and they brought in a silverback and three females and they just had one baby just recently
I've wondered about contacting Damian Aspinall (the Aspinall foundation and Howletts). Feel so bad for Gentaro. (I'm in the UK, as is Damian).
I think that’s a great idea! They have lots of room.
Damian rehomes Gorillas to the wild. Unless there is a health reason not to. They don’t run a zoo and Gentaro would not be able to acclimate to the wild having been partially raised by humans and living in a zoo his whole life. However, Damian would be a good resource for finding a mate for Gentaro.
I think the idea of moving Gentaro needs to be put to rest, there is no way Kyoto zoo just gets rid of their only gorillas. They will never get any more gorillas sent here.
And they don’t ‘own’ him

Hi Ryan! There is only one silverback in Ukraine. This is a male named Tony, he is fifty years old. He has a difficult fate and a bad character. After he could not adapt to his relatives in his homeland in Germany, he was moved to Kyiv. There was a suitable partner for him. But the gorillas could not live together because they constantly fought. Tony had health problems due to excess weight. Now, thanks to a diet, he has lost 50 kilograms and feels good, within the norms of his age. Unfortunately, for three years now he has been forced to live under shelling and explosions, there is a war in Ukraine.

If he is in constant danger why do they refuse to move Tony out? It is way beyond negligence at that point, it’s just plain cruelty. And they’ll still blame the Russians for their neglect. But I will not speak about the Ukraine-Russia War.
Tony is elderly. Moving him would be dangerous. Tony lives in a nice habitat now and looks healthy and happy where he is. He is absolutely loved and well cared for in Kyiv.
I love the Momotaro family, but the situation for both Gentaro and Kiyomasa is sad. It's a shame the 2 zoos can't come together to make a bachelor group for them until females can be found for each.

It cannot be you or others within like say my country the United States that speak to the zoo. It must be a zoo official who reaches out, and there is an organization that takes care of making sure that the gorillas can be moved around when needed. they’re an official organization Who take care of the endangered gorillas that is who needs to be spoken to and it needs to be by an official from the zoo that your gorilla is in

Mi propuesta ha sido que en lo posible, se adapte un espacio en ese zoológico de Kioto para Gentaro y Kintaro y sí en un momento determinado, se encuentra una ubicación para ellos en otro país, que sea un país más templado y con mejores condiciones, no tiene caso llevarlos a lugares con condiciones menos favorables, y menciono también a Kintaro porque su futuro está próximo.

@@ZombieQueen819 Ryan even mentioned it a few months ago. He may have talked to the Zoo keepers where Annie is and their concern is Shabani. In the wild there is a good chance Annie would leave her natal troop or at least leave for mating purposes. IMHO Shabani should not be the concern here, it should be Annie and Gentaro. They're a perfect match and it needs to be made. Unfortunately it's between the 2 zoos and there might not be a harmonious relationship there. Thats just me reading between the lines.

I too hope a female can be found and brought to Gentaro, it would have to be from a zoo that is not a member of WAZA or AZA as they will only suggest breeding recommendations and transfers amongst their members. Japan was a member of WAZA at one time, if they were able to become a member again they would have help finding matches in other countries for their primates. Was it found out that Annie is out of the picture?
Japan was kicked out of AZA (WAZA) but it had nothing to do with primates, it has to do with fisheries. The AZA doesnt support Japan's fishing policy and unless that changes it's unlikely Japan will ever get accepted back into the AZA. Sad situation that the trickle down effect is so devastating for primates.
Yes, I agree, it has nothing to do with the Zoos and their beliefs. Hopefully eventually things will change and the Zoos can be a part of the organizations for the future of their breeding programs.
