      @ComptonCool: Agree 100% sir, Depp should have at least been nominated, if not win the Oscar for his character Ed Wood in this terrific 1994 film Produced & Directed by Tim Burton; however, Martin Landau came through with his portrayal of Bela Lugosi winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture. The film also won an Oscar for Best Makeup. Even though Ed Wood was financially unsuccessful, returning only $5.9 Million against an $18 Million budget, it's still a very enjoyable movie and in my top 100 favorite movies of all times. By the way, I've worked in Hollywood movie productions as a stunt man in my younger days & have a movie collection of nearly 12,000 DVD's. It's refreshing to see a young man who appreciates the subtle nuances of films shot in black & white.... this film in particular.

      Yeah Martin is great too his portrayal of Bela really reintroduced him to people. I think Bela was just a bit like Nic Cage who gets ridiculed for taking crappy roles too but just really loves to work and still gives his performances his all regardless if it's a major picture or some B movie garbage.

      My wife and I had the pleasure of meeting him at a Ralph's supermarket back in 2008 or so.
      Being a Universal Monsters fan,
      I complimented him on his Bela performance, told him it was iconic.
      He was so humble about it.
      A couple of others came over said the same.
      He was a gentleman to a fault.
      Such a nice guy..real pleasure to speak with.
      He asked if I was an actor, no music is my art.
      "Ah,, nice.."

    As a filmmaker, I find these scenes inspirational. Ed Wood may not have been a great filmmaker, but he loved making movies, and he figured out that it's not what you know -- it's *who* you know. A filmmaker can have all the passion in the world, yet still be shut out by the film industry, which largely favors experienced directors who are already in the system. Ed Wood couldn't figure out how to get into the system. Yet his passion is what endeared Bela Lugosi to him, and armed with Lugosi, he managed to get his foot in the door. It's neither talent nor passion which gets you into the system. It's your connections. That's the sad truth. Ed Wood was not a successful filmmaker, but he was still lucky to have gotten as far as he did.

      @ronsterm7076 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @eurikamerleau it died pretty quickly at the box office. When I saw it there were three other people in the theater. The problem was it was "A Tim Burton Film", which usually meant a target audience far too young for a black and white film about people they'd never heard of. A shame, as it's far and away the best thing Burton has ever done.

      The Shawshank Redemption is the best film of 1994 (and probably the best film of all time)..followed by Pulp Fiction. However, I do agree that Ed Wood is a better film than Forest Gump and that Forest Gump is overrated.

      FG may be overrated but Hanks is brilliant in it. Ed Wood was my 2nd favorite film that year behind Quiz Show but there were a lot of great films that year. Google 1994 films and see the list. It's pretty amazing.

      @@darthtrip7188 I agree. People have mentioned a lot of great films in this comment section alone but The Shawshank Redemption is the best film of 1994 (Pulp Fiction is the second best film of 1994) and The Shawshank Redemption is the best and greatest film of all time, in my opinion.

    I love this film so much. It’s Burton’s best film and Depp’s best performance everything about the film works despite not being quite accurate. Fun fact; The Bride of The Beast actually made money, unfortunately not for Wood as he had to get a completion bond from lawyer Samuel Z Arkoff. During their meeting he told Arkoff his idea of starting a production company that would cater to the new teen audience. When Beast made money Arkoff used the money and partnered up with James H Nicholson and started American International Pictures and which changed how films are made and distributed and gave rise to The New Hollywood of the 70s.

    If you paired Ed Wood's drive and work ethic with a modicum of actual talent, he would have been the David Fincher of his day.

    • @OpenMawProductions
      @OpenMawProductions ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ed Wood did have talent. His biggest failing was impatience more than anything. If he had slowed down just a little bit and taken more time he could have achieved something better. His enthusiasm and rush blew every shot he had.

      That's kinda what I love about the movie. Even if it's unrealistic, everyone still treats Ed respectfully, even when he openly admits to crossdressing, hanging around with transexuals blacklisted actors/"red scare" victims, and junkies.
      When you read about Ed Wood, you realize that he was a very outgoing, likable person, and also fun to work with. He somehow won over the Evangelical preachers after they found out his cross dressing.
