Mel Torme (pronounced Tor-may) was a top jazz singer with a voice so beautiful, he was called the Velvet Fog. One of my favorite songs of his is That's All. You can really appreciate his pure singing voice in that one. BTW - Mr. Torme also wrote many songs, the most well-known probably being The Christmas Song . . . Chestnuts roasting on a open fire.......
Frank Sinatra said of Mel Torme something like "If I'm the Chairman of the Board, Mel Torme owns the building." And he kept his voice into old age longer than Frank, truly one of the greats with the wonderful Sarah Vaughan.
Mel Torme is also the man that wrote "The Christmas Song." He loved sing with Miss Vaughan & she loved singing with him! Thank you Harri, weee dodod de do doe! Scat is where it's at!
My mother was a big band singer and was set up on a blind date with Mel Torme before he had hit it big. She refused to go out with him again because at the time he was a nobody and she didn't date nobody's. As a kid I had the 45 record with "No Smokes Blues" by Sarah Vaughan. It had the line "This mess is drivin' me to reefers, 'cause it ain't half as hard to find".
I thought everyone knew Mel Torme. I guess if you didn’t get to watch variety shows like people my age you missed out on a lot of great singers and musicians. I think he was known as the velvet fog.
That scatting is a beautiful art when performed by truly exceptional vocalists. Al Jarreau (R.I.P.) is an extremely talented scat artist. And one of my favorite scat songs is "Beijo" by Earth Wind and Fire.
I got to know Mel Torne from watching Judy Garland's variety show from the early 1960s. Judy had on all the great jazz and popular music singers of the mid 20th century. I believe Mel Torme was brought in at one point to be Judy's music director for that show.
Scatting wasn’t something that just Mel Tormé did. Scatting was common with jazz of that era. Ella Fitzgerald did a lot of scatting and if you fast-forward to the 70s, the great George Benson also scatted. Scatting is a jazz thing. There was a singer by the name of Scatman Crothers. Guess what he did? There is a clip of Scatman Crothers and redd foxx singing a duet. The clip is from Sanford and Son.
Tor-May . Among all the beautiful vocals he was a drummer and songwriter. On stage professionally since 4 years old. He wrote The Christmas Song ( Chestnuts roasting on a open fire - Jack Frost nipping at your toes )
Pronounced Tor-MAY, and he was such an incredible jazz talent. Check out Mel's version of "Comin' Home Baby" from 1962. It's a little more soul jazzy, not quite as scat driven, but I'm sure you'll like it.
And now for something completely different, Sarah Vaughan was former NHLer Russ Courtnall's mother in law and further to that Russ and his brother Geoff used to babysit their neighbour former NBA great Steve Nash

I owe my love for jazz to the Ed Sullivan show. I would never have listened to this if I had not had to watch these folks to get to the rock bands.

Another great male Torme song you would like is coming home.
In the 70s, Mel song the theme song to the love boat.
