    What's the highest number of miles/km you've got out of a pair of running shoes? Let me know the brand and model too 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

    Hey Ben, great video on how to get more out of our running shoes while reducing waste! Repairing shoes using a pair-ups kit is such a great idea, and I appreciate the tip on using old shoes for walking. I'm doing this for some time, hehe. Your efforts to lessen environmental impact are admirable and inspiring. Keep up the good work!

    David from The Green Runners here! Fab video Ben, thanks for extending the life of your shoes.
    Personally I have trail shoes I've just repaired on 1200km and 1400km respectively, plus a pair of road shoes still going (albeit for shorter runs only and with toe holes) at nearly 1800km!

  • @bev9708
    @bev9708 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Never needed to repair the upper on a shoe, though the inside of the heel counter for me is usually the first place to go so this is a great idea! When I started running I heard sooo many youtube runners telling us to retire shoes after only 5-600km or even as low as 400km, especially for us older runners... something which I believed at first but ended up just ignoring as it just seemed too wasteful. Last year I was thrilled to learn from physiotherapist Brodie Sharpe on the Run Smarter podcast/youtube channel that the science does not support this at all and that we can indeed use our shoes far far far longer. The science does seem to support using a variety of different shoes though, which I definitely do. Like you Ben, as a shoe loses life, I start to use it for shorter runs only, based on how I feel in them, and then only on the treadmill, walking and even for working out at the gym. This way I've put over 1500km on my old Hoka Clifton 5's and they still look and feel great, still with tread on the soles. I stopped using them for long runs around 750km, and they lost that magical "Clifton" feel that I love so much at around 600km, as did my Clifton 7s too... though I'm still using the 7s for long runs at 750km, just not as happily, and they still look as good as new!! I suspect that us slower and lighter weight female runners put a lot less pressure on our shoes AND having too many shoes helps too, to spread the love!!! Well, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!!! 😁🏃🏻‍♀🙋🏻‍♀🏃🏻‍♀

    • @timeonfeet
      @timeonfeet  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's amazing Bev, good to hear you've got so much out of your shoes especially the Clifton 5's 🤯 Completely agree I think shoe companies often like the narrative that you need to replace shoes very quickly but in many cases we can get more out of them without getting injured as long as like you say we use them wisely as part of a rotation and don't start doing intervals for instance with our shoes where the cushioning is just gone! I've got quite a heavy step so it can mean with some softer cushioned shoes it goes more quickly for me but have been very pleased with the durability of the sole of my trail shoes recently!

    • @t3d3d
      @t3d3d ปีที่แล้ว

      At first I wanted to disagree, but you are ultimately very right. The well looked after shoe can look almost as new, but the cushioning may be long gone. For some time I have thought that companies are just making-up those limits, but running long runs with my 600km+ pair started giving me strange pain. That ceased after swapping shoes.

    Awesome idea Ben! I have got an old pair of SG4s that could do with the pair ups treatment. Unfortunately for me I don't have Carla's artistic talent to make them as cool as yours. Such a great idea for saving the environment. The most I`ve got out of road shoes is 630 miles for the Brooks Glycerin. For the trails, my Speedgoat 5`s are still going strong at 550 miles, however I will have to check out pair up as the upper is starting to rip.

    • @timeonfeet
      @timeonfeet  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers Oscar. That's good going on the Glycerins, which version have you got? I'm looking at them for my next road shoe as they seem to be good for wider shoes. They're great little kits from pair ups, would definitely recommend if you've got an upper emergency!

    • @oscar8180
      @oscar8180 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@timeonfeet I had version 19. From 500-600 miles I was only using them on grass and gravel paths as the cushioning was starting to fade. They did irritate my achillies torwards the end, so I woudn`t purhcase them again. However, the Glycerin for me is still way better than the Hoka Bondi, as that gave me knee pain every time I used it. In the future I will look to other brands for max cushioned road shoes, perhaps Asics gel nimbus or Saucony Triumph as I`ve not tried those brands yet.

    I may be dumb, but I suppose if you'd remove that mud off upper more often, the shoes would last longer. I run most of my mileage on pavements, and both the toe cap and the heel counter gets ripped over time. By my father-in-law is out there to extend the life of my running shoes working with horses 😀

    • @timeonfeet
      @timeonfeet  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that's probably right, I know there are a couple of groups out there who give advice on how you can treat your shoes to get a longer life out of them and lessen the likelihood of needing to repair. It's something I definitely need to look into. It's hard with trail shoes as they get muddy pretty much every run in these conditions but probably wool extend their life by removing it

    • @thegreenrunners602
      @thegreenrunners602 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      100%. The best way to look after your trainers is the care.
      Heel tears or degradation is usually due to runners not undoing laces enough or at all when taking off and putting on.
      Uppers that are used for trails often get muddy and soaked. The best way is to let them dry naturally and brush the mud off as soon as you can. A wipe with a damp cloth (with Ecover) is perfect.
      Often if mud left on for too long, the enzymes in the mud will break the material down over time.
      Never put your trainers in the washing machine, in the tumble dryer or on a radiator as it affects the glue compound and weakens the joins if the composite materials.
      Happy to do a piece on this if required. 🙏🏻💚

    I’ve taken needle and thread to a few shoes, I find the shoe killer is when the inner heel section fails, that’s why they go to shoe heaven. It is frustrating when the soles are still in good order and the uppers fail 😕

    • @timeonfeet
