As an avid cyclist, this is the exact reason I refuse to cycle on streets. Yes, I will absolutely get the ticket for riding on sidewalks. However, in 35 years of cycling I have never received a citation for being on the sidewalk. I have been stopped by police and had discussions, but the officers always agree. Safer on the sidewalks. People today are just as likely to run over me as they were 35 years ago. My bike stands no chance against a car. My life is too important to challenge cars on a street. If there are no sidewalks I avoid that route.

Dallas is in Texas which is the center of the US oil/gas industry. The government of Dallas and Texas knows who they are beholden to. Even cities with cycling lanes aren't safe with drivers constantly disregarding bicyclists - driving into the bike lane to make a turn without checking for cyclists, double-parking in the bike lane thereby forcing bicyclists into street traffic, etc.

      1) because they have the right to control their lane from wherever they wish, same as a car or motorcycle; and they were riding in a group and
      2) when people ride on the side of the road, impatient people try to brush past them without waiting for a gap in opposing traffic to pass them with legitimately and then sideswipe them knocking them down anyway. This way cars have to actually "pass", although obviously with a homicidal maniac like this guy behind them there is no safe place anywhere on the road and someone in the front of the group should carry an RPG or PIAT to level the playing field some.

Rode tens of thousands of miles here in the USA and in Italy as amateur racer. Speaking from that that is a two lane road and when there is no or little traffic yes side by side is fine or in in city and the speed of the vehicle is very slow. Here we are on a rode pretty busy road and there is traffic cyclists ride single file and the last guy in line looks back and says car up (vehicle approaching get back in single line) or clear and no cars behind then side by side. The cyclists are eating up a lot of real estate on the road and the posted speed causes a bit a speed differential. Share the road yes no doubt but situation awareness and riding in such a manner that fits the situation not the other way around. A quick glance back from time to time is part of the gig to avoid situations like this. Neither of those cyclists not once looked back and not having ear pods in can be a life saver that little bit of audible sound from the approach or a vehicle accelerating etc can and will give you that split second that can and will make a difference for the rest of your life. Law or no law , drug or whatever bad driving it doesn't matter try to avoid and not live a life of damage and pain

I am terribly sorry for this accident and grateful that the victims were not hurt worse. I have never really understood why people enjoy riding their bicycles on a public roadway on which they are sharing a lane of traffic with automobiles. I can’t image how that would be relaxing or enjoyable especially now days with the amount of distracted drivers and what seems to be a complete disregard for the safety and well being of others. That said, the driver of the SUV needs to do time in prison for his actions, not just paying a fine and 6 months of probation. I hope both victims recover quickly and fully. 🙏

My goodness I hope these cyclists are ok. Drink responsibly over non legalization or the flower. I assure you if laws were changed this could never happen. But with alcohol, this is becoming normal. Especially morning binge drinking.

No defense of the driver intended, but if I was a cyclist I would put LIGHTS on my bicycle (flashing rear light at minimum). Also, mirrors can be a life saver, along with not stopping directly behind another vehicle, risking being 'sandwiched' by a driver from behind. This isn't about cyclists' 'rights', it's about riding defensively. Be proactive!!

Let this be a lesson for drivers. You are accountable for driving safely around all vehicles on the road, whether that's slower moving cyclists, horses, farm equipment, or construction equipment. Don't wander aimlessly through life thinking others should watch out for your careless driving.

I really don't know the answer. I do know that it isn't putting the blame on the courts. This has been going on for years, long before the "i'm a victim" mentality of today. The only answer that I see is to make the punishment so severe that it acts as a deterrant. Just because you are higher in the social order, should not get you special treatment. Imagine that you knew that if something happened, you would go to jail, lose your job, your family would lose the house, your children would suffer and Perry Mason and Ben Matlock together could not get you off. Would you then still take a drink and drive? If so, you have a problem and need to get help. The judges are elected by us. Some are appointed by people we ellect. it will take more than people complaining on youtube to fix this. It starts with us. do not drink and drive.
