How To Become An Orthodontist

  • In this video, I will answer the question of "how to become an orthodontist?” and my personal route!
    Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics is one of the specialties recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA) and is defined as the dental specialty that includes the diagnosis, prevention, interception, and correction of malocclusion, as well as neuromuscular and skeletal abnormalities of the developing or mature orofacial structures.
    To become an orthodontist, you first have to become a dentist! After completing your high school training, you have to complete the pre-requisite courses to be admitted to dental school. Dental schools predominantly have similar required classes but there are some schools that have more specific requirements so you have to look into that before applying to dental school. I’ll go into more detail about these requirements in another video but after you complete your undergraduate training, it’s time to apply and complete dental school!
    Dental school is 4 years long at most places in the United States, however at the University of the Pacific, it can be completed in 3 years. After you complete dental school, you are a dentist and are allowed to perform all types of dentistry, including orthodontics but you are held liable to perform at the level of a specialist. I really enjoyed orthodontics so I decided to apply to a residency where I can learn morea bout this field!
    Orthodontic residencies span from 2-3 years depending on the location and there are a bunch of different factors that go into it! I will highlight this in another video but just wanted to give you guys a road map of the route to becoming an orthodontist.
    I went to UCLA and complete my bachelor of science degree in Molecular, Cell & Developmental biology in 2012, then completed my dental school at UCLA School fo Dentistry in 2016. Subsequently, I attended UCLA Orthodontics where I received my Master of Science in 2018 and will be completing my residency in Orthodontics this June in 2019.
    If you have any questions about any step of this process, please drop them in the comments below and I will try my best to answer them !

    Today changed me, I was looking at careers and saw the pay was well and so was the stress level, but as much as that good and I feel genuily interested now knowing about they deal with stuff lile braces. I remember having braces for 2 years and hated them but was fascinated by how they work and remembering watching videos to figure out what they were doing with rubber bands, chains, brackets placements. Of course I am so genius in this but I am quite fond of this, I still have no clue what I wanna become and I am going to be a junior soon. So right now orthodonist is one of my picks now, but I was just wondering is the 11 years worth it, is each year grueling in stress, tuition and workload do get the degrees. I know it wont be a walk in the park but I wanna know what the processes will be like and if becoming an orthodonist is worth it.

    I'm glad i came across this, I'm about to retire from the military and I'm trying to hit the route to orthodontist pretty hard and asap but holy crap. It's actually kind of stressful trying to figure out wtf to do to get started! I know i should probably contact an academic counselor but just trying to do some side research on my own. So i found a program near me. Its 10 weeks of class twice a week for dental assistant and I'd get a radiology license. Obviously that involves no credits but it does involve "hours"... that i was told were needed. Do you think that would be beautiful to go through?.. or should i skip that and go straight into getting a bachelor's in science?

    • @DrGregAsatrian

    nicely presented... i have a question
    Now as a general dentist or other speciality’s than orthodontics ..there’s too much stress and long procedures such as crowns and intensive work and chances of iatrogenic failures and medically compromised patients with injections etc etc.... is an orthodontist has more relaxing and less time consuming between patients or has the SIMILAR problems

      As long as you take your prerequisites you can major in anything you want! I actually am a graphic designer as well and actually found a niche in research where I served as a biomedical illustrator during my time in dental school!

    I’m a Junior in High School. At first I’ve wanted to be a doctor. Specifically, a radiologist at first, then a physician. After that, I started looking into General dentistry. But that really didn’t feel like something I wanted to do. I began looking into the specialties of dentistry and felt connected to orthodontics. I really hope I become an orthodontist because mostly everyone in my family are engineers, IT, doctors, lawyers and business owners. No one is in the career of dentistry in my family and I hope I’m the one to fill in the missing piece!

    The study of being an orthodontist intrigues me, now ever since I have gotten my treatment for braces. But I do not do well with blood? The sight of it makes me feel uneasy, yet the whole process on how braces move your teeth is interesting. I do enjoy writting, and creating sketches and willing to learn the factors behind it.
    But as a high school senior the pressure is weighing in, how do I really know if this is the right career path?

    Hello! I may be late to this video but I have been considering a career change for a few years. I almost sought a route through the national guard to be a dentist while I was currently in service as a medical laboratory scientist. Life had different plans, i started a family, finished out my contract with the national guard and continued working as a medical laboratory scientist for 10 years. I have a bachelor’s in biology, with a microbiology concentration. I have a great interest in being a dentist and specializing in orthodontics for years. I love teeth and I would love helping people get their best smile. I have been researching, but would love to hear your advice on switching careers to become a dentist/orthodontist. It seems daunting after a long career, and with your experience in the field I would really like to hear from you! Thanks!

Second in order to receive my undergraduate studies do I go to a university to receive my bachelors or do I go straight to dental school??

    Your videos are great, I love them.
    I would like to ask you something. If I got braces in my country and then I move abroad, will another orthodontists take over my treatment? because I heard some cases where some orthodontists reject other orthodontists works. I wonder if this is normal or they should always, as a professional, take others orthodontists works in cases like this?

    • @DrGregAsatrian
      @DrGregAsatrian  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually orthodontist do not like to take on another ones case midtreatment simply because they have different plans / different mechanics / etc. A lot of the time, they have a friend orthodontist they can recommend who will continue your treatment

    Thanks for this video! I am going to be starting college next fall and I'm interested in becoming an orthodontist. I've heard that dental schools actually like to have a variety of majors in their incoming grad students - is this true and would it be more helpful to major in something non-science related?

    • @DrGregAsatrian
      @DrGregAsatrian  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly this would be impossible simply because there are so many different etiologists of underbites and its based off the etiology that a treatment plan can be formulated. I would recommend you see a local orthodontist for a consultation so that they can evaluate the best treatment plan for you!

    • @DrGregAsatrian

      Absolutely ! Anyone who says that nothing was confusing / difficult is 100% lying. There are so many concepts and they are all new to you. The way I prepared for my licensure exam was practice, practice and.... you guessed it... more practice! Try & stay calm & cool, you got this!

    Can I have sarpe surgery done to expand my palate if i am missing my first molor and tooth number 10 in the front. I am 28 year old female had previous ortho treatment that went really bad. I wore a palate expander when I was 21 and it left my pallate very uneven. I have root resorption to and will need dental implants on some teeth. In order to fix this mess I will need surgery. I am just wondering how this will be done if I am missing some teeth. How can they expand my palate if my molor is missing or can they expand it by the bone without using the tooth. I am also wondering about the dental implants to. Should i wait to after ortho to get the implants or can they put a temporary tooth theRE so I wont have a gap or just leave the gap How does that work?
