These are aged stars, but they were actual stars and all have played well. Minnesota has taken cast-offs and role-players and paid them like aged stars. As I stated last offseason, the only free agent rental that the Wild should have re-signed was Nyquist, and he had a great season - for Nashville. He may not have wanted to come back to a cap-strapped team like the Wild, but it didn't look like the Wild had the interest in him that they should have. It didn't help that Nyquist wasn't given top line minutes either.
Middleton is a #6 shoehorned into #4 minutes and will next year be making #4 money. Billy should be on the hot seat, five years in and no playoff wins, missed twice, not a great record

Explain how the Wild could've built a better contender when Kaprizov arrived a year before Parise and Suter got bought out? They made the playoffs 2/3 buyout years so far. They had a 100 pt season and choked vs Dallas. There are zero teams in the league that could build a deep playoff contender during these buyouts. In the meantime, they gave him an 'A', drafted some Russians, and made sure he's treated as a leader. Kaprizov will stay if he believes in Yurov, Heidt, Buium, and a FA strategy next summer.

If you actually look at the statistical breakdown of the roster, the only player who actually got better after the all star break was Kaprizov. or, if you're like me, actually attend games and the stat breakdown just backs up what I saw, Kaprizov did absolutely everything, and it didn't matter who his linemates were, they were going to get points by just being there. 2. Marat is most definitely a #1 center. Everything you think Ek is good at, Marat is better. I don't know anything about you, how old you are, your hockey experience, how much hockey you actually watch, but Marat is the closest thing to Pavel Datsyuk the league has had sine Datsyuk retired. That's how good he legitimately is. 3. Graeme Clark could be good, but he needs to start the season in the AHL. Wild are loaded with prospects that they actually drafted and need to see what they actually have.
People saying to play the young guys, but if these prospects can't beat out Bogosian, Merrill, Freddy, or NoJo then that's a problem. Guerin has shown that he wants the prospects to work for a roster spot as seen with Rossi, Boldy, and Faber. That's why he extended Hartman, Foligno, and now Midsy.
The problem with saying if that prospects can't beat out guys like MOJO, Freddy, and Hartman is that they are on one way deals with no move clauses. They are being blocked because of contracts not because those players are performing better than the prospects.

They also haven't seen enough from any of their d-prospects to even consider the possibility of buying out Merrill and that's also why they extended Middleton and Bogosian. Hartman has a NMC, but all that means is he controls his destination. If he wants to stay in MN, then they can't do anything about that. I highly doubt he'd reject a trade to Vegas or some other Cup contender. He still has value as a top-6 winger or third line center.

I would have traded or cut loose Foligno and Middleton. Scrappy unskilled players do not win playoff games. Scrappy skilled players do.
