    Coming back here to let anyone know this absolute Australian legend just the other day saved 4 lives, kids/early teens that were swept out to the sea from the beach. Awarded a commendation for brave conduct by Australian Government. 21 years later and this guy is still as humble as it comes and again that just solidifies that no matter what, he's a bloody winner

    Deserved victory. Had a game plan and saw it through. When he won (unexpectedly) people were apparently screaming at him, "you don't deserve it". Despite all the skaters falling before their goal, Bradley... the man himself... had been a consistent performer for years, even being a part of Australia's first bronze medal winners, and even was a world champion at one stage... As Steve Bradbury had said, this was his validation.

    • @SSkurai
      @SSkurai ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Funny people even say that when in the replay, the so called "favourite to win" was the one causing everyone's collapse. Skates right to block then sticks arm out to the left again blocking, not surprised everyone fell over.

      Yep this was his FOURTH Olympics, he was a previous world champion, ahd he already had an Olympic bronze to his name. It pisses me off when people try to make out like he was just some kid off the local high school team. He was a world class athlete and absolutely deserved the win.

    I have met Steve, and he is as humble as they get. He did the training, everything it took to get to the finals, just like the other 4, but part of the racing is staying on your skates. A deserved win to a deserving guy. Go Aussie Go.

  • @NTRWL69

    I still don't understand why people booed him, Bradbury stuck to a plan and it worked out perfectly. Just because he wasn't the strongest skater in the final, he wasn't even part of the pile-up. My understanding was that the Korean guy formally protested, and the judges are bound by the rules to at least hear the protest out even if it's blatantly obvious that Bradbury had won fair and square. I also seem to recall that they had to wait for the disqualification decisions to be finalised before they could declare the silver and bronze winners.

    True and that's all part of the competition. i.e. staying within the rules and avoiding disasters. The more you push the limits, break rules and take risks, the higher the probability of a catastrophic outcome or success, compared to staying out of trouble. It can go either way. Bradbury was lucky and his strategy defied the odds of success, when cruising in the back row, which would normally not result in victory. However as mentioned, that doesn't discount the years of hard work and sacrifice to get to an international final of an elite sport and being positioned to take advantage of unexpected situations which can arise, particularly in ice skating.

    He created a new saying in Australia that day: "Doing a Bradbury."
    Most of us know this saying, those that don't, learn pretty quickly.

    The Canadian nice guy working hard keeping up with USA.
    The South Korean coming out of nowhere from the beginning to climb over others was winning until tripped up by China.
    So the quiet achiever from a country that doesn’t even consider ice skating a sport because their is no football involved wins great result .

      Just pointing out, we do consider ice skating a sport. Most major cities have at least one ice rink and the current junior figure skating world champions are Australian. Google Ekaterina Alexandrovskaya and Harley Windsor. Harley is also the first winter Olympian of Aboriginal descent while Ekaterina is of Russian descent - not only are they champion skaters they're also representative of multicultural Australia.

      @@chooseyourpoison5105ok I just looked it up there are currently 21 ice rinks in Australia and there are over 100 Aussie rule footy field used in first grade competitions not including school or local field.
      that doesn’t include union or rugby or soccer.
      This race was over twenty years ago we are a majority tropical or Mediterranean climate and in most of the country there is no snow ,we don’t play ice hockey at school like they do in Canada.My husband travels every January to Japan to snowboard not to our snow field because the coverage is terrible.
      Sorry if I hurt your feelings but I was emphasising how out of the main stream speed skating is in Australia ,it would really down on our champions list.
      Junior figure skating and speed skating is that similar?

    • @chooseyourpoison5105
      @chooseyourpoison5105 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@suekennedy1595 I never said it was played in schools or that it was a national sport like it is in Canada, but my point was that it's definitely considered a sport. I do realise that figure skating and speed skating aren't the same, but for Australia to produce world champions at all in either sport is an achievement in itself and a measure of how the sport's popularity is growing.

    Met the great man a few years ago at a speaking function. He was engaging and funny. We went out for a few beers after and he was just a genuinely good bloke. People poke fun, but no one sees what it took to make the Final in the first place.

    • @theshillneckedlizard8364
      @theshillneckedlizard8364 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly. People forget that this was his FOURTH Olympics. Most athletes count it as the pinnacle of the career if they make the Olympic team once, and he did it four times. Not only that, he had won the Worlds' four years previously and he already had an Olympic bronze to his name as well. It pisses me off hearing commentators speak about him as though he was just some guy who got off the couch and happened to wander into the Olympic stadium and win gold. He was a world class athlete and up there with the best. He absolutely deserved the gold medal.
