This isn't even the first time he's played a very human-like android, and the performances are very distinct from each other. I see Tudyk's name on a project, and I know it's going to be quality.
Apparently the slap from K2 to Cassian was improvised by Alan Tudyk and the reason Diego Luna covers his face to act like he's rubbing his cheek is actually hiding the fact that he's laughing his ass off.
I think a lot of it is Alan Tudyk's acting. He put real soul into the this character so that saying goodbye hits hard. For me, I think the "goodbye" is so striking because it's a signal that he knows it's his last word, his final moment.
The novelization of the movie is actually really good, because it goes PoV for all of the characters as they face their deaths, including K2. About 5 mins or so (audiobook wise) are spent on him analyzing every conceivable escape route for himself, and analyzing his own memories as it were. He then looked to the best chance for Jyn and Cassian to get the plans would be to sacrifice himself. All of this programming and analyzing taking place over a few seconds of 'real time'. Really adds a nice additional layer to his sacrifice, which while not vital, since they kind of give you that realization with how he says "goodbye", it is nice to read/hear it done.
They could've added a quick "thought sequence" of him frantically parsing all the different scenarios, and then pausing to think "I have to sacrifice myself, to save them". It would've been beautiful - and I would've cried even more (which is not a good thing).
ObligedUniform This THIS RIGHT HERE IS THE PROPER RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SW MOVIES AND BOOKS. The Sequel Trilogy relies on supplemental material to explain shit in there movies. Thats not how it works. The movie should have enough info to justify itself woth the books comics ect being supplemental material that can make a scene in a movie sadder, happier, etc etc, K2SO's hypothetical scenario's being a perfect example.
"I haven't completed my calculations" "I'll made them for you" THAT. THAT is totally what I call a "star wars spirit" in a SW movie : a little funny , a good punchline for an answer and something "Cool" in the attitude of a character, BUT ALWAYS serving the scenario and the sequence.
Anthony Daniels was actually very jealous of the actor who played k2 because Anthony had to wear the actual costume but k2 was motion capture. The two actors met after the premiere at the party and Anthony just said "f*ck you" 😂
K2S0 made that movie so much better. He had all the good quips like C-3PO but being an Imperial droid and not a protocol droid he had a very different personality. And it was amazing how they used his eyes to convey so much.
Hands down the best Star Wars movie since the original trilogy. Great story and well directed. I thought the cast did a good job in general and whilst some of the new characters were not particularly memorable they were infinitely more likeable and believable than the actors from the movies that came afterwards. K2SO was a delight. I don't recall another droid ever actually killing someone onscreen in the movies though my mind might be slipping.
I despise Disney trying to buy out everything but that "I have a bad feeling about thi-" was not only perfectly timed but also executed flawlessly, credit where it's due, that was great

When robots are funny then it is infinitely better because you see humanity in something that does not. Plus he is the funniest out of everyone regardless. The Sequels overloaded on it but he makes it more natural.
I really hate to say this... but this droid is basically the ONLY character in the entire post prequels, disney owned star wars that doesn't suck. this thing is just effortlessly funny, its dialogue is near flawless, it exudes the true spirit of lucases star wars and it actually STAYS DEAD when he dies thus properly concluding his character arc. I love this droid, I hate its the only redeemable thing about disney ruining star wars forever.

My favorite scene is at 1:07. K2SO casually catches the grenade and throws it back all while holding a conversation.
Two things to say:
-The rendering is amazing, looks very photoreal
-When the faceless robot has more personality than all the other characters
It's precisely for that that he has more personality, he has no expressions and he only uses his lines and body language

When robots are funny then it is infinitely better because you see humanity in something that does not. Plus he is the funniest out of everyone regardless. The Sequels overloaded on it but he makes it more natural.

I really hate to say this... but this droid is basically the ONLY character in the entire post prequels, disney owned star wars that doesn't suck. this thing is just effortlessly funny, its dialogue is near flawless, it exudes the true spirit of lucases star wars and it actually STAYS DEAD when he dies thus properly concluding his character arc. I love this droid, I hate its the only redeemable thing about disney ruining star wars forever.

Fun fact, the actor who voiced K2-S0 is Alan Tudyk, he also voiced Sonny and the other Ns-5s from I-robot.
