A song of pure acceptance and support. I have never, ever sensed even a whiff of insincerity in Cyndi, and that's why this song is so powerful.

Cyndi Lauper, as much as she already was a superstar in the eighties, is still underrated because she is one of the best singers and performers ever. She aged like fine wine and she became better and greater with the years even though her chart hits were all in her early career. If you don't believe me just check out some of her live performances on youtube or listen to less succesful songs like her rendition of Etta James song 'At Last' which will leave you speechless because of the quality of her voice and performance in this one. I bow my head to the talent of this woman. Long live Cyndi Lauper.

She actually wrote this song for a friend of hers who had AIDS. It's truly one of the first pride videos. That's why she references the rainbow. He didn't act the same, and she was trying to cheer him up with this song.

She didn't write the song herself, Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly did. She picked the song because of the recent death of that friend with AIDS.

this song speaks on so many levels. If you're feeling down or like you don't fit in or your voice is not being heard, you still matter and are important! It is a huge gay pride anthem yes and can still apply to other aspects of life as well! Bravo Cyndi!

This could not have been more timely. Cyndi’s mom just passed away in the last few days. I’ve had this song a lot on my mind ever since reading of her passing. Her mom was in most of Cyndi’s videos…and for a kid of the 80s (like me), it was always fun seeing her mom in the videos.
In this video, her mom is one of the ladies in the boat.
    Thanks Dereck for this reaction.

Still remains one of the most beautiful songs ever. The lyrics are gorgeous of course, but it's the way Cyndi delivers them that makes it hit different to any other song. Nothing but love for this.

She sings it with feeling behind it, so you feel it, I love artiists like her, who makes you feel the song, by the powerful emotion in the voice, not just belting out high notes, that is what makes one stand out to me from a singer.

    Hello *Dereck,*
What I liked about this song (of course, the arrangements, the melody, and the voice of *C. Lauper* are magnificent) are the lyrics (at the time, I had a much poorer command of English, so some song lines escaped to me).
I think many French people liked it for the same reason. The words used are relatively simple (for example: *Your colors are beautiful like a rainbow,* 90% of French people understand this sentence, even if they aren't fluent in English). These are often used in songs, slogans, etc., that almost anyone can understand.
Even if we can't explain the song word for word, we understand the general meaning the first time we listen to it.
This song delivers a beautiful message with lyrics that a child would potentially use.
It's generally the hallmark of the most beautiful texts.
    Thanks for this new reaction.
    Peace, folks. 🤗

As per the Wiki: The single has become a popular anthem in the gay community. In various interviews, Lauper elaborated that the song had resonated with her because of the recent death of her friend, Gregory Natal, from HIV/AIDS.[7] Years later, Lauper co-founded the True Colors Fund,[8] a non-profit organization dedicated to eradicating LGBT youth homelessness.

She’s a stunning singer …. You need to do Girls Just Want To Have Fun, Time After Time, I Drove All Night & Who Let In The Rain. Last time I saw her live was supporting Cher at the Meadowlands Arena in NJ about 8-9 years ago…… an epic show, both ladies were on top form and singing like there was no tomorrow …… one I’ll never forget for sure !!!

Cyndi Lauper is a tremendous artist, singer and songwriter, she is the owner of an unreal voice and a unique and incomparable style and soul. That is why great artists and musicians such as Yoko Ono, Pink, Roger Water, Rod Steward, Jonny Mitchel, Jean Michelle Jarre, Phill Collins, France Gall to name a few love her work and her person.

For 10 years she been doing Home for the Holidays for charity to end homelessness among LGBT youth, so many artists participated through the years, from Pink, Kesha, Cher, Adam Lambert & so many others. Even Marilyn Manson & Henry Rollins performing with Cyndi Lauper. True Colors is one of my favorite songs from Cyndi & my favorite music video from her. I Drove All Night is my favorite song from Cyndi, perhaps a future reaction.

It's not easy to write a song which appeals to everyone while also promoting a message of unification and acceptance. At least not without sounding pretentious.
There's nothing pretentious about this song, though. It's very beautiful and sweet, but it's also a song of strength, empathy and genuine encouragement.
What's it about? Who is it aimed at? Well, in the tradition of the very best songs, the answer is that it's aimed at whomever you want it to be aimed at.
It could be a lover, a friend or a family member. Or even a colleague. And let's not forget the dual message of racial and gay acceptance with the rainbow motif.
It's hardly an original one. But in lesser hands, that message could've easily sounded like a United Colors of Benetton advert.
Cyndi avoids falling into that trap and delivers a truly emotional piece of music that stirs the soul as much as it comforts it.

Will always be one of my favourite songs. What you said about a simple message making someone's day. That really does sum up this song when I think about it. Emotional throughout, but with that underlying positivity message. It changed people's days back then and it will carry on changing people's days to the future. What a gift from Cyndi. Personally I struggled with confidence and depressive moods growing up, listening to this was like seeing the sun rise every time. ❤

A great artist: I liked Cindy a lot more than Madonna. Cindy Lauper is a wonderful artist who lives for her art and isn't afraid to be courageous in the stances she takes. Her voice is so clear and crisp. Perfect. This song has been covered many times and is a wonderful classic about acceptance and understanding. Just beautiful.

I had a boyfriend who was a DJ at a gay club in the early 90's and we broke up. He saw me come into the club and stopped the dance music and played this. This was one of our songs. It was romantic. Yes, we got back together for a short time more. We were both under 22 so you know how that goes.
