Stupid Simple PVC Kayak Load Assist Ramp

  • PVC total cost: ~$35
    No glue, no cuts. I drilled a few holes straight through with a cordless drill.
    The boat was a pain to try to get on and off the car by myself without destroying my paint or smacking the mirrors off, so I made a ramp that is super simple to put up and take down. The lengths of pipe can be strapped up with the boat.

    I like the idea of using the 3/4" pvc to attach the 3" slides.

    Pretty good solution. Wondering though, where do you put the two lengths of PVC pipe when traveling from A to B?

      I did this design but attached it differently and put the kayak into j cradles. I needed 10 foot pvc and had to ratchet straps them to the roof rack. It was a royal pain, especially with two kayaks on the roof. Took me way to long especially since I’m not real proficient at using ratchet straps. Gave up on the idea.

      i just strap them up on the racks alongside the kayak itself. the straps i use to hold it all down provide more than enough grip/tension to haul them at highway speed. I didn't do a vide of the tie-down procedure, but it's not that complex.
      anything is possible with ratchet straps lol

    i got a hatchback too. Do you have any issues just using the factory racks? Or would you recommend a dedicated roof rack kayak carrier?

    • @WaffleShortage
      @WaffleShortage  ปีที่แล้ว

      just getting the thing up and down was the hardest part. my 'yak was too big for any of the dedicated racks i could find, so i just had to lash it to the roof bars.

    What do you do when you get to the water...take the pipes wit you...

    • @WaffleShortage
      @WaffleShortage  ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah. they just slide alongside the boat and get held in place by same strap tension as the boat.

  • @damkayaker

    OK but with that size car where do you keep the pipes secure while on the water? (pvc thieves)

    My question is, how do you carry the poles to were ever you go.

    • @WaffleShortage
      @WaffleShortage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      they just lay alongside the boat on top of the racks. i use ratchet straps to hold it all on. they kinda go under the roof rack and around/over the boat... hard to describe. but basically, the boat and the PVC tubes get squished together long-wayse and held down by the same strapping once it's all up there.

  • @ytboombox
    @ytboombox ปีที่แล้ว

    u taking the pvc with you right?

    • @WaffleShortage
      @WaffleShortage  ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, i just laid them alongside the kayak, and the tension from the ratchet straps that I use to secure the boat to the rack held them in place fine. the small cross-bar just goes in the back seat.

    Do you always carry your PVC when you travel with your kayak?

    • @WaffleShortage
      @WaffleShortage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, but i dont travel far. about 25 min on ~55-60mph roads.
      the PVC gets strapped down alongside the boat due to friction of the ratchet strapping going around the boat and under the roof racks

    How do i transport those long pvc tubes with me to unload and load at the beach?

    • @zerobahamut81

      On the roof rack

    • @WaffleShortage
      @WaffleShortage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      i just strapped them alongside the boat. i ran the straps sort of over the top of the boat, under the roof rack rail, then back over the boat to the same rail.. so like, one strap loop per roof rack rail...
      for each rail... and just put the big PVC tubes alongside, so they'd get pinched in with it all. I have driven up to about 65mph with that setup, and it's rock solid. could definitely take it to like, 85mph before problems would happen I imagine.... and they'd be due to the boat itself.

      Have an SUV so just shove them in..of course no passengers. I could strap along side of kayak if had time & passengers.

    Great idea but takes up a lot of space. Parks or beach may not have this much space.

    • @WaffleShortage

      @@cynthiashlosser-hogan3628 I always just parked someplace after unloading real quick in a temporary spot. Anywhere with boats is going to have room for trailers and stuff. I got rid of this kayak because it was too big and cumbersome anyway. It was all I could get on used market during pandemic so I made it work for a while.

    What are those sick wheels on the Impreza?

    • @WaffleShortage
      @WaffleShortage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      some Rota wheels. not sure of the exact model, but they are 18" rota's, like 9.5" wide. pain in the ass to pay for tires though... lol.
      previous owner put them on, and I haven't bothered to change, because they DO look awesome haha. just wish they were like, 8" wide instead of 9.5"

      they are some Rota's. they were on the car when I bought it off the previous owner (who worked at the dealership where it came in as a trade-in).

      yeah this boat was like, 90lb. there was no way I was going to be able to LIFT it on alone. that's why i came up with this. for a heavier or longer boat, I've seen lots of similar ideas that go from the back end of the car, rather than the side. that way, you can use the leverage of the length of the boat itself to help sort of maneuver it up and over.
      good luck!

    If you need that much gear to handle a kayak maybe you need a smaller boat. How about a trailer?

    • @WaffleShortage
      @WaffleShortage  ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, i wanted a smaller boat, but it was mid-pandemic and there were none for sale within like 600 miles lol. managed to find this one for sale like 20 minutes after the facebook marketplace ad went up and snagged it. far from ideal, but it was something to get on the water when everything was locked down.
      later in pandemic, i just bought an old beater truck with a 6ft bed.
