By that logic, Europe ‘stole’ from Italy since so much of their culture was based on the Roman Empire. I’m sure you know how ridiculous that sounds. I think a lot of Cambodians don’t realize, their modern culture today has been heavily influenced by Thailand. Early Thai civilizations (e.g. Sukhothai) borrowed heavily from Cambodia/Angkor Empire, given that Angkor was the most developed civilization at the time. However, as Sukhothai & Ayutthaya rose, and Angkor declined, the Thai civilizations developed their own culture. There was no need to borrow from Angkor culture at this point because why would you borrow from a perceived weaker culture? This would be from 1500’s onwards. The same thing was happening in reverse, and now that Ayutthaya civilization was flourishing, Cambodian elites were educated in Thailand and borrowed heavily from Thai culture. Therefore, Cambodia high culture today is no longer rooted in traditional Cambodian/Angkorian culture, but rather, Thai culture that developed afterwards. An example of this is the Royal Ballet of Cambodia, which was extinguished after the Khmer Rogue. Queen Sisowath Kossamak of Cambodia had to go to Thailand to get instructors and these Thai instructors taught the dances to Cambodia. As such, the version you see today is not the Cambodian culture of old, but the Thai culture that developed after. This is the case with most of Cambodia’s culture today. This is similar to the relationship between China, Japan & Korea. India is China, Thailand is Japan, Korea is Cambodia. However, while Japan’s old culture was based on Korean culture, it developed it’s own culture that was different & unique to Japan. This is similar to the relationship between China, Japan & Korea. India is China, Thailand is Japan, Korea is Cambodia. Korea initially had a more developed high culture than Japan, which it borrowed from an even more developed culture, China. This is the same with Cambodia, which borrowed it’s culture from India.
However, while Japan’s old culture was based on Korean culture, it developed it’s own culture that was different & unique to Japan. This is the same with Thailand, whose ancient culture was based on Cambodia but later developed it’s own culture. And Thailand has long since developed and surpassed Cambodia, hence becoming the cultural leader in the region. To claim the all current Thai culture today is ‘stolen’ from Cambodia is to claim that culture is stagnant and remains unchanged for over 700 years, which is categorically false.
Let's not over complicate things. You wrote this huge paragraphs with conviction yet contradicts what is based on credible research. Fact of the matter is, this is "Royal Ballet of Cambodia". It's not difficult to see as the the proof are on Angkor temples. Let's not try to reinterpret history and stick to the facts. You can't just say, "thailand developed" their "own culture" when there is a lack of distinction in Khmer loanwords used for Modern thai attire(Ex. Sabai, Chong Kben..ect).
Nothing has really changed between Ancient Khmer culture and Modern thai culture.
Japan and China is a different matter. It's when another country want to take what is "original" and call it theirs. The thai's are tai-kradai and aren't native to South East Asia. Whereas koreans, chinese, and japanese are native to their land. Thai people like to say, "Thai Apsara from Pnom Rung and Phimai temple". But do they understand that those are Khmer temples?
There are no such things as "Thai Apsara". So if you're trying to make a point that, "Thai Apsara dancers" or "Royal Ballet" is thai culture, then you are incorrect.
Refer to UNESCO, they inscribe historical culture based on facts. If you check, there is no "Royal Ballet of Thailand".
Credible Thai historians admit that modern Thai culture is adopted from Khmer culture. If anything, i'd listen to them, not you lol
If you speak thai, please watch "Ayutthaya History Khmer Thai Historian Reveal". Don't let your pride of being Thai get in the way of facts. It's okay that another country passed on Culture for other countries to adopt. There is no humiliation in that. But choosing to ignore facts when presented to you is "willful ignorance". Facts will always be facts regardless of how hurt you may feel.
@@NoLightMystery firstly cultures were shared between Cambodia and Thailand in the 1960s, and if you don’t believe me even the famous apsara dancer, Buppha devi said so. And Thai people came from the province of yunnan in China then they migrated to the Khmer empire and then formed their own king down, sukhothai. The Khmer empire started to get weaker and poorer at that point so why would it be needed for us to steal a weaker, poorer and more of a looked down culture? And if you say we stole your culture by stuff like Thai apsara and stuff like that I can arguably say you stole Indian culture. Even from your temples to your outfits are similar. And I don’t stop here, lately Cambodians have been stealing Thai clothing that have always been ours for century’s and you stole that, put it in shows and dances and call it Khmer clothing. And you can look it up on quora on how the Khmers copied our clothing.
@@NoLightMystery forgot to mention Thai Cambodian royal dancers were educated and trained in Thailand that’s why the Cambodian ballet looks so alike to the original, aka Thailand.

Doesn’t necessarily mean that Sukhothai stopped practicing khmer culture. They preserve it up till today. Do you not understand? It’s pretty simple. And princess Bopha Devi she was talking about an era of where there was exchange of culture between the Thais and the Khmers. And if you watched the whole thing she will say that in the end Khmers got rid of Thai dancing style to adopt the original Khmer dancing style that was derived from the carvings of Angkor. And about Khmers copying your traditional dress. We didn’t copy we have always wore that way. And before you say it’s Thai you should study the materials of the dress. Thai material differs greatly from Khmers material. Although the way you wear it looks the same it not the same! The Thai dress the pleats are sewn and there is a zipper in the back to easily wear it! Khmers pleat by hand from 2 meters of fabric. So we did not copy!! Plus the dress styles are found all over Khmer temple walls. Where can you show me where the Thais got their dress inspiration from?? You don’t have proof so stop whining.
