34:27 Ceaser rejects Will because he doesnt want to leave the other apes in captivity the way that they were. When he turns around, you can see his face visibly trying to keep his composure because he had to pretty much reject his father to free his people/apes.
I agree. And I disagree with what the narrator said about how Will looked at Caesar. I think Will genuinely cared for Caesar; that he really did view himself as Caesar's father, for all intents and purposes. Caesar wasn't a mere ape to Will. He was Will's family.
@@Chocobear555I think he came to that conclusion due to the leash in Wills hand. To me (and to Ceasar) he knows he means well (he turned his back because it was a hard decision to make). But that doesn't matter. It's what that leash the hand gesture represents not the intent. If he goes back, Ceasar is back at square one just looking at the world passing by in that familar yet small window. Leaving the other apes behind in this cycle of abuse. This is what made Ceasar saying "NO!" so powerful. He is done submitting going for scraps and not truly being free. Ceasar never hated Will. He even understands why he made those decisions. But something has to give to break that system.
Man, this was fantastic. Snappy pacing, strong insights into the production and themes of the movie, great underplayed narration infused with just enough emotion. Can't wait to see the next two parts of this!
That shot of Caesar resting his face against the chalk window was one of the most gut wrenching scenes of the entire trilogy, even now it still gets me.
Koba was tactically more advanced then Ceaser. Koba simply had a different upbringing ripe with torture /experimentation. Remember Koba was the First ape to get the AZr drug and was already highly intelligent before ceaser
@@hunterv9983 i have had this debate before: war was coming regaurdless, Koba knew this and decided to preemptivly strike while the humans were disorganized and weak. Even ceaser knew war was inevitable

Nice joke made me laugh but I think he means that Caeser knew what he was saying he knew that he was retaliating where as a parrot only repeats what I has been told without knowing the meaning behind it.
@@indeed260 I believe rather than “understanding” the words via meanings birds understand responses via repeated sounds. So if they repeat something like a name they don’t know that it’s a name, but they know it elicits a specific response from others (their caretakers). The fact that they can’t create a new sentence from random words is proof that the words have no meanings, but they know to repeat a phrase if they want something. Caesar on the other hand creates sentences from new and random words. That is proven by the fact that he and many apes can use sign language which birds cannot. Thus when Caesar speaks it is proof that he is not just copying, he is using language. He understands that “no” has a meaning and that is why he says it.
@@spartan1010101 In July 2005, Pepperberg reported that Alex understood the concept of zero.[21] If asked the difference between two objects, he also answered that; but if there was no difference between the objects, he said "none", which meant that he understood the concept of nothing or zero.[22] In July 2006, Pepperberg discovered that Alex's perception of optical illusions was similar to human perception.[23]
I still remember when Caesar says no it sends shivers thru me and everyone in the theatre either gasped or did a nervous little chuckle because we allowed ourselves to believe it was a real ape . That’s solid fucking filmmaking right there .
The same thing happened to the audience I saw it with. Dead silence, except for one or two excited chuckles. I'll never forget it. The moment was finally (out-)matched by the scene where Red Donkey finally saves Caesar at the end of War. That made everyone break down in floods of tears.

I remember LOVING this trilogy! My family and i used to watch it damn near every week. I can proudly say i seen all 3 in theaters. Amazing. Thank you for shining a light on this trilogy and how dope it is!
Did anyone else find themselves in a strange yet amazing place during Rise: shouting an excited “Yes” when Ceasar finally roars “No” for the first time?
"NOOOOO!" Never had a single word from a movie moved me to the point of catharsis like that. I remember my skin crawling, my eyes widening and my fists clenching as though I was Caesar! As a sci-fi junkie I think that scene is the single best 5 seconds in the history of sci-fi cinema.
Agreed. I thought I’d get the same sentiment the first time Godzilla let out his cry in this most recent reboot. Maybe the volume was too low in the theater, but it seemed so subdued. But even so, nothing has touched this moment that Serkis gave to us with Caesar... the closest was Zachary Quinto reaching down to scream “KHAAAAAN” when Kirk was trapped and died.
I would say this is tied with darth Vader telling Luke he’s his father. It’s more iconic, and it’s after a fight that the hero gets beat and bested by this threatening villain that nobody knew who he was under that mask. Both are beautiful scenes.
I can’t recall the last time an analysis of a film so expressed the feeling of the film and exposed nuances I never noticed that the insight moved me to tears but this did. Thank you for posting this. I can’t wait to see your analysis of Dawn and War.
As someone who used to be part of a cult, and thus opressed, I almost cried when you started talking about the window metaphor. The happiest day of my life was when I demanded for more than I was given, and left the cult forever. It's been 3 years since.

I don't think "Caesar" didn't want to be an ape. I think he didn't realize he was an "ape" until he was betrayed from his own perspective. When in captivity he realized he wasn't the exception he thought he was.
This is TH-cam, you're not allowed to make me feel and question myself or life or what being alive is. I got on TH-cam because I had 5 mins to kill waiting for a doctors appointment, now I'm sitting in my car still in the parking lot after the appointment because I couldn't wait till I got home to finish hearing what you had to say. You spoke, I listened.... And I'm better for it. Thank you.
I like the way you emphasised the fact that Caesar was an ape for a long time, before revealing that it is actually about being human. You captured the essence of the experience of watching the film very well. I think his shame at what he was, comes directly from the fact he wasn't what he thought he was. A perfect reflection of the human condition. What we accept unquestioning, as human nature, is nothing more than learned behaviour.
The way you read your scripts adds so much to what you wrote. When you slow down the tempo of your speech when arriving at the point of a theme really hits it out of the park. I’ve been recommending your channel to my friends, and I hope your channel gets the attention it deserves.
His metamorphosis from clinging to the window via memory and his drawing to accepting his identity and revolutionizing the freedom for not only himself but for his kind is such an important detail to acknowledge. A triumph of growth and a triumph of breaking free from the metaphorical and physical chains of oppression. What an amazing film analysis. Great job man.
I got chills and tears I relate so much to the ceasar character and Andy still deserves an oscar for his performance in this trilogy cant wait for the next video man keep up the great work
Damn, it’s crazy cuz I feel like most people can actually relate to Caesar. The feeling of isolation, an outcast, betrayed by the people you trusted, thus shaping you into a leader of your own domain. Acquiring the ability to defend yourself mentally and physically. Then when the people that left you return, you realize you never needed them in the 1st place. Though you are grateful, you no longer crave their company as you did before because now you found a new home, a new people. Before you were alone and weak. Now you’re with your people, stronger than ever before.
I am forever crushed that this series never got any real Oscar nods, this trilogy made Planet Of the Apes into an arthouse blockbuster series and I am forever looking for the day this series gets the credit it deserves

Fantastic and awesome video bud. Great job.
This was one of the best breakdowns and analogies of a move that I’ve ever heard. The Plant of the Apes movies are representative of the human struggle. To be very simplistic...we often create our own enemies. The future war that takes place in these movies could have been avoided, if the humans had treated the apes with a little respect and compassion.
That's exactly what Conquest of the Planet of the Apes is all about, the way the original Caesar intended to rule in a more enpathetic way, to be better than humans, demonstrated by him letting Breck live, which is why I hate the fact that both Landon and Jacobs were killed by the apes in Rise
@@happypuppy-i4k I would hardly call it terrible. It is quite the opposite in my opinion. I watched it twice in the movie theater and I think it has fantastic themes, character development and soundtrack.

Incredible video essay. I've always felt these films were so freaking underappreciated because so few people gave them a chance due to the "stigma," if you will, of the previous Planet of the Apes films. Really loved seeing all the reasons I love this trilogy spelled out for me.

I hope the next one comes out soon
Go further into the future than Jan 2021
@Chris Peers it should be out soon I believe. There is a small teaser for it on the community tab.
Dawn in my Opinion was the Best Movie of the Trilogy I loved them all but Dawn was phenomenal. Caesar and Koba's rivalry for Leadership was such a great story they were both Total Opposites one was raised by good people in a loving home and protected, the other Was Tortured and Abused by Humans
It’s honestly pretty sad that Caesar never saw Will again after Rise.
same idk why they just changed the main human character but I guess Will really got no reason to stop Ceasar
@@themonocleguy371 Will died from the virus. There wasn't anything that could be done for him
@themonocleguy371 It would have been contrived and unrealistic if Will was still lurking around after the first movie
@BernardRiley Also in the later movies its implied Caesar was there for Will's last moments
@@brendanmuller7301I always got that notion too. I always imagined Will went to see Caesar whenever he could, but when he got sick and the world started to fall apart, Caesar went to him.

Ceaser rejects Will because he doesnt want to leave the other apes in captivity the way that they were. When he turns around, you can see his face visibly trying to keep his composure because he had to pretty much reject his father to free his people/apes.
I feel like it was both, ya know?
I agree. And I disagree with what the narrator said about how Will looked at Caesar. I think Will genuinely cared for Caesar; that he really did view himself as Caesar's father, for all intents and purposes. Caesar wasn't a mere ape to Will. He was Will's family.
@@Chocobear555 seriously, if will didn't put ceaser in the sanctuary they would've euthanized him. But, he should've immediately paid to get him out.
@@Chocobear555 exactly i was hoping this would be a great retrospective on rise, but its just full of inaccurate takes.

That shot of Caesar resting his face against the chalk window was one of the most gut wrenching scenes of the entire trilogy, even now it still gets me.
He freed Koba. He trusted Koba. A trust he learned, all to late, was misplaced.
Koba was tactically more advanced then Ceaser. Koba simply had a different upbringing ripe with torture /experimentation. Remember Koba was the First ape to get the AZr drug and was already highly intelligent before ceaser

Also husky’s weirdly enough 😅
@@zantinottbrock6427 actually, they can know the meaning behind what they're saying, and some do
@@indeed260 I believe rather than “understanding” the words via meanings birds understand responses via repeated sounds.

Brings me to tears man. What's amazing is that scene was a last minute addition.
This trilogy is one of the greatest ever.
Fax. An underrated one too I might add.
Funny how a movie that this time tells the story from the apes' perspective is the one with most human skill, heart and thought.

Tbh I wanted the guy to pull a side arm and put that chatty ape to sleep 🙂
"NOOOOO!" Never had a single word from a movie moved me to the point of catharsis like that. I remember my skin crawling, my eyes widening and my fists clenching as though I was Caesar! As a sci-fi junkie I think that scene is the single best 5 seconds in the history of sci-fi cinema.
G Lucas: “Hold my nonsense-beer 🍺....
“I’ll Add unnecessary “noooooo’s” EVERYWHERE: try me!”

Definitely one of my favourites
I agree totally.
I watched the trilogy last weekend and not even 10 minutes had passed on Rise and I was already hooked. These movies are perfection.
I can’t recall the last time an analysis of a film so expressed the feeling of the film and exposed nuances I never noticed that the insight moved me to tears but this did. Thank you for posting this. I can’t wait to see your analysis of Dawn and War.

Thank you. The planet of the apes reboot trilogy is eeeeasily my favorite modern franchise and has soooo many deep themes and messages
When Caesar first said no, me and my brother where shocked into silence.
