🇨🇦Some interesting mockups came from Avro Canada. There was the CF-103. A swept wing version of the CF-100 Canuck. There was a mockup of the CF-105 Arrow. One of the most futuristic mockups of all times was the Avro Project Y. A vertical takeoff tail sitting jet fighter in the shape of a spade. Propulsion was revolutionary too. Technology captured from Germany after the war. A gentleman by the name of Jack Frost headed up the project.🇨🇦

20:30 what a huge loss to aviation when Lockheed exited the airliner industry, one can only imagine what could have been had this beauty entered service (no RR engines, thank you). The L-1011 is still one of my favorite aircraft and my Boeing test pilot and engineering friends still tell me what an excellent design it was. Love your content Mr Machat!

I got to see several mockups get built in the course of my career. I always loved seeing them come together as drawings were converted into a 3 dimensional object. A lot of design problems got captured during that work, too! Special thanks for the image of the inside of the Long Beach Douglas plant. I worked there as an intern, in a room not far from the drafting offices seen in the photo. That really brought back some memories.

Fun stuff. The first RQ-4's were white. And that's looks like San Diego in the back ground.
Mock ups are fun to build and a lot can be learned from them.
I had the opportunity to build a mockup of the Darpa Tier II plus . It was a lot of work only a few guys working on it. Two were engineers. We worked 15 to 16 hrs a day for 2 months to build it. Wood, foam, fiberglass were used .sub contractors had mockups of there sub systems which really helped finish it off.
Unfortunately, we lost the competition ,so Northrop bought Ryan . It was hard work but fun to create ,and work with a small team of talented guys.

OK. Ya got me, Mike. I thought the X-47B @ frame [25:02] was a real airplane because of the puddle of JP-5 on the ramp under the starboard wing... Clever of the photo crew to set the subject over the wet spot for that effect. And the Buff at Palmdale, I thought was a mockup because of the white stuff around the inboard engines. But I should have known better, since I live in Tucson, and I've seen that white shrink wrap on all the birds at DM to keep packrats out. Great show again.

Always great to see new videos, Mike. This is an especially cool one. So many concepts that were built in mockup form, but never went any further. The Boeing SST and the X-20 Dyna-Soar are two examples of ones that should have been completed and flown. In the case of the X-20, the actual airframe was more than 50 percent completed when the program was cancelled. It, along with the mockup, were destroyed. What a waste.

In 1969 the Gates LearJet corporation began development of a medium sized twin engined executive helicopter they called the LearCopter. It was a good ten years ahead of its time, but was cancelled because of the recession of the early '70s, never progressing past the mockup stage. I lived in a small town southwest of Wichita back then, and I happened to see that mockup in a junkyard south of town.

Thank you Mike for yet another awesome video. As an industrial designer, I this subject especially fascinating. I had the chance to work as a designer on a development of a flying boat about 10 years ago, a project that ended up as a scaled 3D print. From what I heard, when filming the Darkstar mock-up, some Chinese or Russian satellites changed their course in order to photograph this model, since they thought it was a real thing.
One could also mention the pretty good looking Russian Checkmate, designed to attract new clients to the Russian Aerospace industry. Last but not least, the funny story of the Iranian F-313 Qaher, that was also shown in flight, although thanks to bad photoshop skills, it was obvious that the in flight photo, was a cut-out of the mock-up in the studio. Yes. The flying mock-up reflected the same lights of the one in the studio. Cant wait for your next video!

Around 2000, I took a vacation roadtrip down to the Orlando, Florida area. I stopped in at the Warbird Museum at the airport in Kissimmee, just south of Orlando. They actually rebuilt wrecked warbirds, and worked on others. They also had some old historical planes, including Wrong Way Corrigan's famous plane. Against one wall in the hanger, were several plywood mockup fuselages of Spitfires used for ground scenes in the movie "Battle Of Britain"! Pretty cool. And if you watch carefully in "Tora, Tora, Tora", you can tell the taxiing P-40B that gets blown up is a mockup. The fuselage was fabric over steel tube frame, while the real P-40 was all metal.

I'll have to tell that story in a separate video. Like many mergers, the Fairchild Republic story was not a happy one, and the perfect storm of a WWII-era factory, cost overruns, technical and manufacturing problems and many other factors led to the Air Force lose all hope and cancel the program. That was the end of the company in October 1987.

Tony and Craig! The core of IPMS Space Park in the 80s! If you guys watch this: Greetings from Robert Arance!
One interesting mock-up was the "stealth bomber" built for a Honda commercial in the late 80s. Caused a bit of a stir as it premiered before the official release of the B-2. Built at Agua Dulce Air Park (I saw part of the construction, the basic framework on landing gear, as I would stop by the airport when I worked at a test facility nearby), it was dismantled and shipped to Florida for the filming. Honda donated the mock-up to the SAC museum where it was on display for a few years. I tried posting a link to more info, but then my post does not show up =/ Google south dakota air space museum

We love the beautiful presentation drawings . Unfortunately, Government officials who wove the paper designs more than the work of understand practicality and reality.. My first concern is "Does it work." My second concern is Will it be sufficiently designed to be modified and adoptive. My last but most fervent concern is "is it pretty?' I wonder if our current military arranges their priorities in the opposite?

Any chance of a short follow-up... "where are they now?" for these mock-ups? I'm guessing that they are either in museums or a landfill, unfortunately. As an engineer, I've worked on various projects that never got beyond the prototype phase, and had to throw a lot of work into the circular file. Not a great feeling, so I can't imagine what it's like to have to tear apart some of these huge mock-ups!

The Boeing SST mockup was on display in Florida for many years, then was sold when the museum went under, and was converted to a church! When I first saw it, the mockup was sitting outside of the church, and I was able to go inside and sit down in First Class. I believed the mockup was to be scrapped, but later found it at the Hiller Air Museum in California. Unfortunately, the mockup was taken off display, but as far as I know, they still own it, and hopefully will eventually put it back on public display.

Our friends down from our hanger at California City Airport.
They built mock ups for museums and movie's.
The movie Rocketeer. They built the airplanes in that movie.
The Spruce Goose on the movie. When you see it leave the rails? That wasn't supposed to happen. It was supposed to stop and then guy was to drop from the plane. Instead it malfunctioned and the plane jumped the rail and actually flew. When Howard Hughes say's That it does fly. That was an ab lib. That line wasn't in the script.
The X-1, in The Right Stuff.
And I got recruited to help build a full size mock up of the F-117 for the movie Executive Decision. Later that mock up would be sold and then used in the movie Philadelphia Experiment 2.

The funny part, about building the F-117.
A group (4) black hawks flying over California City Airport from Edwards Air Force Base. When they saw the model. They called Edwards and told them about a downed F-117. We didn't know until all these MP's showed up. They tried to move everyone away from the plane. Some General showed up. After proving to him it was just wood and metal. He congratulated everyone on what a good job we did.

Where do they find such outstanding craftsmen?! I imagine building one of these mockups, even with a team of these talented wood workers & a shop with the most advanced & precise woodworking machines, would be a months long process, & the cost to build such a mockup would be in the hundreds of $thousands, if not more than a $million. Then, after the mockups were completed (& the contracts were won or lost) these masterwork mockups would be destroyed. Though I believe I understand the reasons for the destruction, destroying such works of craftsmanship seems fundamentally wrong (I imagine there's at least as much careful craftsmanship in these mockups as in the finest furniture, but fine furniture often becomes treasured heirlooms, not items to be dismissively discarded).
