    No, they are not colonies at all. You are wrong here. Dom/Tom is a normal expression in French and it has no colonial/oppressive connotations... they are 100% part of mainland France, and enjoy the entire benefits of French law as regards civil rights etc. They do NOT see themselves as oppressed colonies, as you rashly described.

    • @mfcq4987
      @mfcq4987 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Are you from the DOM-TOM to say that? Personally, as a metropolitan, I do not presume what ultramarines think. Indeed, they are used to French institutions and contribute positively to them (in the last elections, they sent a large contingent of left-wing MPs and we can thank them for that), but I'm not sure they don't sometimes have the feeling of being treated like colonies.

      @@mfcq4987 I have been living in Reunion for about 6 years and I don't really have the impression that the population is treated differently from mainland France (unemployment benefits are going well for one of the regions with one of the biggest rates in unemployment in France).
      They also seem to do what they want with their island too. I doubt that metropolitan France imposed on them the construction of the new coastal road, for example, while a substantial budget for its manufacture remains a political choice all the same.
      All the islands are not treated the same way by metropolitan France, it's true, but it's above all a choice of the region itself more than that from France.
      The Mayotte crisis could have been better managed if the region had done its part, even if the situation is much more complex than that (Mayotte, like Reunion, is too proud and chants to always want to do as well or better than the metropolitans... ). They act a bit like children but can we blame them for having priced the consumer society in the face without the hindsight that could be done with the metropolitans?
      And we must not forget that the vast majority of the colonies established on the islands were uninhabited at the base, which means that these same islands whose term colonized is used pejoratively (especially by locals) were practically offered to the people that France brought above and that we also give them the choice to vote if they want to remain French.

    The ural mountains are indeed the limits of Europe in the east, but in the south-east it's the causasus mountains.
    Regarding Paris, Haussman kind of wanted to avoid revolts yeah, but that was a minor point (and it didn't really work anyway, as Paris had an insurrection in 1871, just after the Franco-German war). The main aim was make the "medieval" part of Paris more modern, like London (biggest city in the world at the time) was. Paris had some very beautiful parts, but the little medieval roads in the "historical" center were dangerous, dirty, and overcrowded. When the soon-to-be French emperor went to London, he knew what he wanted to do with this part of Paris.
    So the main point was to make Paris more "beautiful" (though some people didn't like his style), cleaner, less dangerous...
    ...
    ...
    hm
    ..and to limit revolts.

    It's true that we are not discriminating in our hatreds, we all treat everyone the same way. But it's not really hate, it's more just contempt. And a little pity for all those people who are not lucky enough to be French...

    • @mfcq4987
      @mfcq4987 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. The addition of the votes of the Caldoches (of European origin) and the Kanaks gave a majority for the status quo, but if we only look at the votes of the Kanaks, they were mainly for independence.

    • @charlesmadre5568
      @charlesmadre5568 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mfcq4987 That's true. But not all Caldoches even had the right to vote. You needed to either be or be descended from a Caldoche who was already there in 1998. So newer migrants (including those from Asia or other Pacific islands) were denied the vote. Now that the Nouméa referenda are over the Kanak vote will be less powerful since there's no longer justification to deny these people the right to vote.

    This road bridge is from Reunion Island (the most populated french oversee territory, my mother is from there, I lived a bit there too). It is said it was "the most expensive road in the world" (proportionally to its length). I'm skeptical though, I've seen some crazy Norvegian stuff.
    For the toxoplasma gondii parasite, if the reason is really raw meat then Italian people should be the same, they have the same culinary traditions regarding that. But it seems most people don't have symptoms anyway, even when infected.

    DOM-TOMs, or nowadays DROM-COMs are not colonies since all of them had at least once a vote for independence that they refused. Those who didn’t are independant since more than 50 years if not 60 or more.
