  • Eckhart discusses spiritual awakening as it relates to two aspects of life: the acquisition of things, and the activities we engage in. Liberation, he explains, depends upon your inner relationship to what you have or do.

Eckhart Tolle is widely recognized as one of the most original and inspiring spiritual teachers of our time. He travels and teaches throughout the world.
Eckhart is not aligned with any particular religion or tradition, but excludes none. His profound yet simple and practical teachings have helped thousands of people find inner peace, healing and greater fulfillment in their lives. At the core of his teachings lies the transformation of individual and collective human consciousness - a global spiritual awakening.
Eckhart Tolle is the author of The Power of Now, a #1 New York Times Bestseller, which has been translated into 32 languages and become one of the most influential spiritual books of our time.
In his most recent book, A New Earth, he shows how transcending our ego-based state of consciousness is not only essential to personal happiness, but also the key to ending conflict and suffering throughout the world.

I once took my mother in law, a German woman born in 1908, to an American flea market outside of West Chester New York. It was up-scale, having many lovely antiques and household items. There wasn't much "junk". She was fascinated by all of it. She had no interest in buying even the smallest kitchen item. She said her fascination was purely to see how Americans had lived during the same years in which she was a young person in Germany. She said that having to flee your house quickly, and later lose all material belongings to the Russians, cured her permanently of the need to acquire anything. In her last years, living in Hamburg, Germany, I visited her very spartan apartment. She truly was a relaxing and happy person to spend time with! I learned a lot from her.

This clean space I’ve created gives my mind more rest. It feels great knowing somebody else will enjoy the stuff I once enjoyed. Thank you, Eckhart, for this wonderful discussion. For many years I was in business and found that I didn't really have a life; I had a schedule. It began to dawn on me that I was too busy to have a life. And that was my problem: I was too busy. So, I recalibrated my life. Now I live in a modest house with much less "stuff". I am much less attached to things. I have retired from my business. I live a much simpler life and live in the NOW rather than in the past or future.
My friends say that I look 10 years younger than I did 10 years ago. My health and well-being have improved to no end. They wonder at my ability to deal with the problems that life throws up without "losing the head". I say to them that the problem of the day is just part of another chapter in my life; it will be dealt with and it will pass. But I will not lose sleep over it.
I am at peace now with the many difficult issues of my past life and childhood and have forgiven all those who might have injured me along the way. I find that I have much more compassion for people than I did before. I have learned to listen rather than speak. People come to me now to listen to their problems. It seems to help them. I have become a compassionate listener of sorts.
I have to say that with much less "stuff" and less busyness, my life is much more fulfilled. Forgiving and relinquishing have been very refreshing. I enjoy your videos and lessons very much. I now spend much of my time writing and being at peace. Thank you Eckhart.

The tricky thing is that the belief 'simplicity is more', is still a program from the ego. Only spontaneous inner guidance can be trusted.
Like Eckhart implies, the situation doesn't matter, its your relation to the situation that does.
Now the idea of simplicity to focus on what matters really makes sense. The more things you have in your life, the more attention gets divided. Whereas living a life primarely doing what it promps you to do, and spending the other part learning from life is way more effective for those that care about spiritual growth.
We should always be weary however, that we never really know what life may ask of us. Sometimes it just gets busy, and thatll be just the way it is. One can always wonder if higher simplicity is possible, but there's never a 'one rule serves all situations'. Its more effective to figure out what spontaneous inner guidance means for you, and get in tune with that.

In Zen Buddhism meditators practice in as minimalist attire and surroundings as possible. When you meditate each thing is a distraction. You look at something and automatically a thought appears "inspired" by that item.
Once you are very advanced at meditation you can practice it anywhere, even in distractive surroundings but you will be able to remove yourself from such circumstances much easier.
I'm not very advanced yet after only a few years of meditation but I can already meditate when waiting in public transport or a car (instead of staring into a smartphone screen etc.)
On the other hand I am able to organize my life in a way that does not force me to use public transport or a car. I can walk everywhere. So you both reduce things or activities and become less distracted by them when they occur ideally.

Eckhart and Nisargadatta Maharaj are my "go to" teachers in this life. They both resonate with me so much. I love this talk. It's the nature of western society and perhaps the world that "more is better" or if you're not constantly busy or doing things, then there's something wrong with you or you're not "living to the fullest." I've always struggled with this because aside from a couple major projects I'm engaged in, I don't really do much. My hobbies consist of walking, hiking, spirituality, cooking and reading. To some, this would be "boring". But I beg to differ. I find that doing less is so fulfilling. I'm also an introvert and a homebody. I will take a quiet evening at home over partying any day. Much Love.

I am a part of a family that considers the busier one is ,the more productive etc. The family is very ego driven. I have lived a very busy life. As my perspectives have gradually changed, the general feeling is I have less in common with other family members. Funny thing that I should stumble upon this video. I just started a new job. You know the kind: you are to do the work nearly beyond human capability. Just the other day, I said to my friend: 'I don't care anymore. If it works - great. If it doesn't - fine, I'll move on. I am not buying into this stress anymore. I will do what I can and if that is not enough, we can peacefully part ways.' Pretty much everybody in my office is stressed out, tired and sick. All I know is, I have this one precious life - precious to me - and I refuse to be whipped into madness in order to make living. Some people might think that my way of thinking is crazy or too risky, but I feel strangely calm... and it feels great.

Well of course those things are not easy but u dont take into account why u may react in a typical manner it isnt just ur attachment but it may also be ur link to the collective mind that is all of us. All of us typically react badly to those situations so that feeling may erupt thru u even if u have cleaned or removed ur attachment to it. I have had to remove a friend of over ten years from my life and i hardly blinked when i did it. This is because i became aware he was becoming a toxic part of my life just as i am doing this for whatever else may toxic or unpleasant to me. Its all about the relationship u have with these things or the awareness u have of urself and ur feelings and thoughts. If ur aware the collective mind can affect u then it starts to wane in its affect over u. Be in the moment and be aware of everything u are thinking. Then the tougher part be aware of EVERYTHING ur feelings about those thoughts.

Adam Smith thought so. In a famous passage in The Theory of Moral Sentiments he described a “poor man’s son, whom heaven in its anger has visited with ambition.” The young man imagines how much easier his life would be if he could live in a grand home, attended by servants and travelling by coach rather than on foot: “He thinks if he had attained all these, he would sit still contentedly, and be quiet, enjoying himself in the thought of the happiness and tranquillity of his situation.”
The man spends his life striving to achieve his dream. He becomes wealthy, with all the luxuries he imagined, but to get there he has to work so hard that he can never relax.
“Through the whole of his life,” writes Smith, “he pursues the idea of a certain artificial and elegant repose which he may never arrive at, for which he sacrifices a real tranquillity that is at all times in his power.” The man is deluded by the glamour of wealth, tricked by an illusion. Yet his achievement is not only real but socially beneficial: “It is this deception which rouses and keeps in continual motion the industry of mankind.”

I find it so strange to discover, again and again, that pretty much everything in life really does “come to you”. I used to believe that “I” had to do everything, had to manage everything. Otherwise how should anything happen??
My most recent example is moving places. I knew my flatmate was moving out, yet it didn’t feel right to look for a new place for myself. At some point it did, and I started looking. Couldn’t find anything; Didn’t even know what I was looking for. My search radius changed, and at some point, quite suddenly, I knew it would be best to move back to my parents’ place. Suddenly I knew it! And it felt so right. Only two days after, I realised I had to start moving my things NOW - even though there was still another month to go in this apartment. So now I am moving my stuff, bit by bit, pretty much on my own. And it feels very peaceful. I declutter my own stuff and my parents’ cellar + my old room to make space. It feels lovely. And I just so happen to have the time for all that right now.
Really… I am so amazed by how everything seems to go perfectly. Just because I am more and more able to get out of the way☺️🙏🏻💕

Hes spot on about possessions. Its how you feel about them that matters. I too have more possessions now than I have ever had, however I dont have any problem about it; on the contrary I am grateful for them because the accrual now means I need not work to obtain more. I have the things I need or wanted to live, and have had them for a long time. The things are all old, the house is old, the vehicles are decades old, not acceptable to most people, however it is all useful and all that I need, and more.

I’ve have learnt the ego always has to answer a question, it can never simply be and accept. “how can I get fitter?”, “how can I can I get richer?”, “how can I get smarter?” It is restless and greedy, it keeps you anxious and insecure.

The correct question should be: Shouldn´t we keep our mind as simple as possible..because life itself and everything around it can just be perceived and felt according to the way our mind (and our feelings) are kept in order and harmony (or out of order and under stress). Happiness is not about poverty, asceticism or lack of knowledge..it is about the specific ways we conceive and perceive our external world..and (according to Tolle) about the quantity/quality of identification with the external world..we simply have to learn that WE are not our wealth, our success, our relationships or our perception of the outer world..it´s a complete different story, when we are talking about "us" in the sense of the higher or real self..

well put. i find the best way for me to think right now is to not let most of my thoughts lead me around. to not indulge in them. i m able to quickly realise what im thinking about and pop the bubble right there by focusing on something infront of me. like trees or passing cars anything really. simply be aware of what ur thinking about.

@@cortezbaldur413 Exactly! That´s what Tolle means with presence or straight awareness..just stop to think that your mind is creating "reality", because that´s not true..our mind should mainly serve as a helpful instrument for getting external things, situations and issues in correct order or harmony..or as J. Krishnamurti tells us: "Our mind can be a wonderful servant, but a terrible master"

    I agree.
I love having only what I need.
I’ve noticed when I’m full up from the inside, I naturally don’t feel much desire for “things”.
On a mindful walk yesterday I saw a painting of a bird with a bright green background.
I felt incredibly connected to it.
I think I might purchase it soon.
I don’t often buy things I don’t “need”... but there was a calling and deep connection to it.
I think it’s ok to have things. But first and foremost must be the question... what’s my deeper connection to myself... and how would I feel if I lost my “things”...

As mr. Tolle said my aim too is to get less and less attached to things around me in due course. I do involve in activities and try to posses things now with the intention of creating order and congenial atmosphere atleast to a limited space where scope for further unselfish/ spiritual development arise in future. It doesnt mean that i am too entangled with things in the mean time. I do keep a distance but not to the extend i would like to as yet. Thanks for your enlightened view on topics.

not always remember there is always the exceptions here and there that prove the rule. i have a hyper mind at times yet even at those times i can be incredibly lazy.

    • @drnilimajain
      @drnilimajain 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@cortezbaldur413 I suppose that this is the momentary physical laziness you are talking about. This laziness is only because your body is trying to build up on its energy levels to be able to become active again. But life is not only about physicality. Physical is an expression of the larger life....much more than lazy or non lazy moments.

Dr Nilima Jain laziness is , always , not for building energy level . many a times .. people who dont want to sit in meditative posture , are comfortable lying on bed and doing meaningful meditation . examples of hyperactive minds are workholics and wives , who either avoid duties towards their homes / or multiple duties .. for various reasons .
