I’m no Mario Duplantier, but I was a drummer in a gigging metal band for 10 years. I’d fast for much of the day before gigs to avoid on-stage intestinal problems because I have a sensitive stomach. As the show came closer during the day, I’d start eating power bars, get hydrated, and keep a jug of water next to my kit - hopefully Gatorade. Despite all that, what REALLY got me through the gigs - regardless of sleep, energy, food intake, or even being sick - was pure adrenaline. I’d enter a different mindset - like a possessed and hyper-focused zone. Everything felt like it was over too fast. I had two exercise-induced UTIs (urinary track infections) from sitting in so much sweat on a drum throne for prolonged periods of time. Long-story-short, the drums are primal; they stand in a unique place among the instruments. No instrument demands more from the human body; it’s not even close. I can’t imagine touring night after night with a Gojira or Meshuggah setlist. Unbelievable what these guys do consistently for months on end - night after night.

@@mbx6823 actually I'm quite a fan I just think some vocalist pull it off better than others. Barney IMO is a good example. I think Joe's vocals sound better when he doesn't do it. I used to think it was a prerequisite for the genre but there's so many bands now that pull off a mix of sounds or just break from screaming or Cookie Monster vocals all together. I suppose it's very subjective taste.
The fastest recorded drummer is Mike Mangini of Dream Theater.. He is in the Guinness World Record book , but the best there is, Dave Weckl who is incredibly fast or maybe better put, very quick. I play drums but not very good but I see tons of concerts and I focus on the drummers.
You picked their best live show on TH-cam too. Unreal these guys are. Seen them 4x and they never disappoint. As a drummer, stretch and try to keep calm mentally when you’re fatigued helps a lot. Love your channel.
Hey, my son's favorite band!! The sheer physicality of playing, especially in this style (I refer to it as "Blast"), is taxing on the body. Neil Peart made his decision to retire based on the toll so many years of touring and playing took on his body. These "metal" guys are something special, that's for sure. Crazy talented and in great shape! By the way, for me anyway, lots of water and bananas was the best way to avoid cramps on stage. I was not nearly as physical as this, but I still worked hard on shows. It wore me out more than once. :-)
Gojira is the best thing France has ever done for the world! Btw, the song is about black holes. Just look up the weight of a black hole compared to the Sun 😅
I believe this is a love song. The subject (Joe?) astrally projects, leaving behind his ‘thoughts and cages’, and eventually finds that ‘here in the center stands the light of love that never shall be touched from greater silence shall return!’ Thank the gods that art is subjective. I’m probably objectively wrong, but it’s where the lyrics take me.
Love this reaction! Thank you!! Spiritbox “The Mara Effect” live at Silverside Sound is about sleep paralysis and is just the kind of extended epic masterpiece you might really love. Keep growing the positive vibes!
Now I know that this is metal music and metal is all drums, lead guitar, and bass guitar As for singing well, there isn’t any just evil Screaming and evil Growling. In other words, it’s Instrumental metal music played at one thousand miles per hour (mph)
Actually that's entirely accurate, yes metal tends to have more advance guitar/bass and drum playing that other genres except jazz, sometimes equal to it...but all screaming and growling? Naah, there's so much metal with great singers out there
I've been playing metal and punk drums for 23 years played countless shows in bands for most if my adult life. Joe is on the top level of drummers for sure! I can play this tune and it's one of my favorites it's so dynamic! Food wise I eat a ton of chicken, many eggs, as much fruit and veg as I can get hold of. I drink water. Only water ( except booze when getting loaded). I shy away from processed foods and sugary things. I do body weight exercises when not practicing. Kind of have to eat like an athlete to be able to consistently play technical shit with all four limbs going all the time. Sounds so good tho it's definitely worth the effort because it's a lifestyle you need to have in order to maintain. Great channel BTW man. Good work
I’ve never heard of this band or the song. I’m not very knowledgeable of this style music either. But man I’m glad I watched this video. Seeing the music being played live adds so much more to the experience. I now like this song.
Welcome to the wonderfull World of Gojira!!! I recomended silvera, flying whales live, amazonia, stranded. The drummer I think is one of the best drummers alive. BLESSING FROM PERÚ
Personally i need 15 mins to warm up before long jam sessions. Stretching the pressure out of your hands and ankles and i always have water. Honestly we tend to play so relaxed with specific techniques using fingers and wrist that combined with the rebound of the drum makes it less tiring. If you’re someone who plays too much with your arms rather than wrist and finger you’ll get tired sooner. For anyone needing to hear this. Arms are for direction
How does that drummer move his feet so faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaast? That's nuts!!! My son loves this type of music!!! I'm impressed with the musicianship!!!! I have a heck of a time hearing or understanding their message!!!!! Bummer!! Giddeeup!!!!
5:10 - I think so, yeah. Sleep paralysis and using Astral Projection to get out of the body you're trapped in. I deal with sleep paralysis often enough that now there's no fear to it, and meditation was a big part of getting to that point. I'm watching this right after watching your serious chat video, giving this song a chance and pulling up the lyrics as it's a genre I don't have a lot of experience with yet and it's not what I would usually go for. I can see how the music matches up with the lyrics for the intensity of the experience they're singing about.
Dude, Gojira is one of the best metal bands today. I went to a gig of them in Stockholm two years ago and it blowed my mind. Even for a metalhead like me.
Gojira is in my opinion the best French metal band, and certainly more. About Mario Duplantier, the drummer, he maintains a good physical condition, with sport, especially bodyboarding, but also a fairly strict diet. He once explained that he felt exhausted before during a concert, but he obviously has a good mind to overcome that. His routine is to do a minimum of 3 hours of battery per day, including 1 hour of continuous double pedal. He also explained that to play their songs at their best and ensure on stage, the members of the group don't take any drugs and very little alcohol :)
Probably the best metal band currently. They are pure art! Heaviness, technique and lyricism at the highest level. My suggestions are Stranded, art of dying, the gift of guilt, and toxic garbage island. Keep it up! 🤘🏽
The song is about black holes and space, the whole album is about the journey from Mars to Sirius, which Mars is the god of war and Sirius iirc is related to peace, and the album also talks about the decline of the environment and such

I used to do something similar (hydration a must, of course!) except there was no mediation or deep-breathing that could get me out of anticipatory anxiety and hyper-mode! I had a good ear and a solid metronome, but I played live far faster than was appropriate, which pissed off my band mates.
When it came to drinking or drugs, we had a policy of 'I don't care what you do on your own time, as long as it didn't interfere with showing up for practice or gigs, or performing well at shows'.

I used to think it was a prerequisite for the genre but there's so many bands now that pull off a mix of sounds or just break from screaming or Cookie Monster vocals all together. I suppose it's very subjective taste.
@@keikofay9804 sure Barney is a true legend
Oh man, now we're getting into the heavy stuff!
Seeing that Rush poster in the background confirms you are a connoisseur of fine music. I appreciate your appreciation sir.
OH Gojira!!! Definitely one of the heaviest bands on the planet from France.
Gojira is the best thing France has ever done for the world!
Btw, the song is about black holes. Just look up the weight of a black hole compared to the Sun 😅
But... Django... Daft Punk... DJ Cam... Edith Piaf... Serge Gainsbourg... Debussy... Satie...
They had to start doing good things at some point ;) Singed - a german
Destrage is best French prog metal band!
I believe this is a love song. The subject (Joe?) astrally projects, leaving behind his ‘thoughts and cages’, and eventually finds that ‘here in the center stands the light of love that never shall be touched from greater silence shall return!’
Thank the gods that art is subjective. I’m probably objectively wrong, but it’s where the lyrics take me.
Alcest??
Love this reaction! Thank you!! Spiritbox “The Mara Effect” live at Silverside Sound is about sleep paralysis and is just the kind of extended epic masterpiece you might really love. Keep growing the positive vibes!
I reacted to this band on my channel loads a while ago. It’s spelt ‘Gojira’ by the way.
Explosia is the best example of his killer, guitar rake effect. Saw them in Jersey 2013 with Slayer🤘
Almost everyone notices the drummer first. The guy truly is talented. He plays in timing sequences that have never been done before as far as I know
Now I know that this is metal music and metal is all drums, lead guitar, and bass guitar
As for singing well, there isn’t any just evil Screaming and evil Growling. In other words, it’s Instrumental metal music played at one thousand miles per hour (mph)
Actually that's entirely accurate, yes metal tends to have more advance guitar/bass and drum playing that other genres except jazz, sometimes equal to it...but all screaming and growling? Naah, there's so much metal with great singers out there
They’re new single is just amazing, have to chal that one out. “Born for one thing”. Trust me… it’s something.
Gojira...the best thing to come out of France since French toast.
You *gotta* check out Stranded by Gojira. The studio version.
This song is my go-to alarm clock song on my phone when I REALLY have to wake up. The heaviest alarm clock of the universe.
Congrats! You've just been blown away by Gojira. You're not the first and you certainly won't be the last!
Now that's what I call a brutal introduction to one of the best bands out there.
Thank You for my release. Love them !!!! 🤘🤘🤘
So glad I watched this video! I love your reaction bro! Keep em coming.
Welcome to the wonderfull World of Gojira!!! I recomended silvera, flying whales live, amazonia, stranded. The drummer I think is one of the best drummers alive. BLESSING FROM PERÚ
Gojira is the best metal to come around in years! So heavy!!
Dude your room decorations are so beautiful I’m kinda jealous not gonna lie. It makes me want to have my own room 😢
The best reaction to my favorite band ... thank you!
Man yall started him out on the deep end.
I love gojira so much! I'm so glad you did this one
Wait ! You into Gojira now ? Welcome to the rabbit hole my friend
Saw them in 2019 at Knotfest. They are AMAZING live. Many good songs and a super creative band all around
I find it interesting that no one is mentioning Mastodon. Brann Dailor is a beast of a drummer. And he can sing.
Be one of the few youtubers to check out their song "esoteric surgery" very different pattern.. or "art of dying" ❤👍👍👍
❤❤ Love you Jamel. awesome you have done this reaction, Gojira are just the best 🤘🤘❤
HOWDY FROM NEW ENGLAND....THIS SING IS ABOUT ASTRAL PROJECTION AND THE ALBUM IT CAME OFF OF IS A CONCEPT ALBUM...ITS NAMED FROM MARS TO SIRIUS....THX
Keep it up! 🤘🏽
Awesome! So glad you came to Gojira!
Yeah you said their name right! Also imagine the old Japanese Godzilla movies and how they say "GOJIRA!!!!"... Yup.
Hailing from France, Gojira is an unbelievable talented band.
The song is about black holes and space, the whole album is about the journey from Mars to Sirius, which Mars is the god of war and Sirius iirc is related to peace, and the album also talks about the decline of the environment and such
So glad you got to Gojira! Love it!
For an easier entry into Gojira try listening to Silvera, Born in Winter or Amazonia.
+1 for Silvera
"They are melting my face, brother"
Working as intended.
