Wild child, coming soon 🦏
San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance is thrilled to announce that Livia, a Southern white rhino at the Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center, is currently pregnant from natural breeding and expected to give birth this July. Livia is one of six Southern white rhinos that were translocated to San Diego from private reserves in South Africa in 2015 as part of SDZWA's efforts to save the critically endangered northern white rhino.
These chubby unicorns are trained, through positive reinforcement, to receive any needed medical procedures, as they could potentially serve as future surrogate mothers for a northern white rhino calf after embryo transfer.
