Why you call me out, Josh!?!?!?
You 2 definitely have a....very interesting relationship XD
Yeah Oscar, maybe it's because you sorta dissed the Wii U, but Josh dissed the Wii Mini soon after, so fair's fair.
You know, they always say “Seeing is believing” but these bosses don’t understand the idea for it…
The most believable things are the ones we CAN'T see...sorry, the moment you brought that up, I couldn't help but reference the conductor from Polar Express
Funny......this is what Infinite told Silver in Forces...while he did not Understood the power of the ruby.
Is seeing believing?
Then I'm the man who shapes reality
The whole world bending the knee
The king of deceiving
Stealing the moon so you can finally see
What it means to BURN WITH MEEEEE!!
What about the potential “illusion” of when those comments are made? That does NOT look right to me!
I love that you used Bray Wyatt’s old entrance gimmick in here.
RIP Windham
At least im not the only one who noticed. RIP Bray
Another Honorable mention would be Omori from, well, Omori. He's the final boss of the game and he uses illusions masterfully, forcing you to watch every single horror a kid that already has a lot of baggage should ever see. Starting from seeing his friends gleefully murder Basil, to a reminder of what he did wrong, Omori tries everything to force Sunny to surrender control, all of it capped with a beautiful finale that showxcases Sunny overcoming his inner-demons and recovering from his PTSD.
oh sick unmarked spoilers in the comments for a game I was planning on playing. Love it
@@McBehrer Dude, it has been 4 years since that game was released, you honestly mustn't be expecting me to always add an spoiler warning every time I want to talk about a game?.
Besides, this top spoiled me on the story of most games that appeared in it and you don't see me calling Josh for doing so.
Imagine getting judged for liking puppeteer lady when people like deformed chimera lady.
The Internet is weird. What did you expect? (Also I liked Donna more than Dimeniscu too for the record)
@@shadowlinkbds Man of culture right here
She'd probably be nice if not for the mold.
@@CountShamanyou need help my guy😂
I find it funny that you get judged for liking the most “normal” one of the 4.

@@alexmills9223 That might be a good list for Spooky Month.
Top 10 Treacherous Bosses
The Sorrow is definitely a good choice for this list. He really makes for a memorable encounter since the fight can be a breeze if you haven't killed anyone other than the bosses. But if you killed a lot of soldiers the fight can take a long time. It makes you consider how you handle the stealth gameplay of Snake Eater quite effectively.
Although it can be ended at the start if you actually drown yourself then take the revival pill.
Ah, the Sorrow. That's the boss whose "fight" gets longer if you were less pacifist (or at least that's what I remember)
Yep. I did a pacifist run and only had to dodge the past bosses. What really impressed me is that the game remembers the methods used to kill the guards, even if you tricked a vulture into eating a dead guard and ate the vulture: 'you ATE me!'
I know I play the game with the goal to KO the enemy and hide the body so the Sorrow was super easy (
The distance you have to traverse remains the same, but more gets in your way the more you kill.
You know it's serious when peter isn't cracking jokes heaven forbid it depressed peter fighting
Even worse is an infuriated Parker, seeing as he was able to pulverize Kingpin mano a mano after Aunt May was mortally hospitalized.
@@davidgeorge1943 yep
Scarecrow is perfect for number 1. He was so close to winning, but he injected fear toxin into Joker-Batman, and that was enough for Batman to take down Joker by locking him away in his mind, showing Joker his fear of being forgotten
But man all those hallucinations and mindscrewy segments throughout the Arkham series is incredible.
personally I think the MAd Hatter from Origins had a better illusionary focus. Truly sending Batman into another world, not just a warped aspect of the world he already lived in, with goons walking through mirrors and glasses, card-house constructs and twisted camera angles.
Scarecrow was, in all essense, just a glorified stealth-section that repeats several times without much change.
@@miniman649 I am more partial to Ra's Al Ghul because of how creative his attacks are.
He actually won. He wanted to unmake Batman's legend and he succeeded.
The Arkham Asylum Scarecrow fights are the closest we’re ever gonna get to a modern boss fight against Freddy Krueger.
There's the NES game you could play, just don't
Also quick note when fighting Nicole/The Marker, Do not let Nicole get within arms reach of you, it's a instant death, with the added bonus of her screaming Isaac's ears off.
Honorable Mentions:
*Lady Butterfly - Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
-She can send out illusory clones of herself to rush you down. You can get rid of them by using a snap seed or by waiting until she turns them into projectiles.
*Mitsuki Konishi (Tigris Cantus) - The World Ends With You
-This one's a total trip.
Illusion....calling it now, Zexion will be on this list.
I'm calling it too Zexion will be on here. He mainly uses his illusions to fight you both in chain of memories and KH2.5 final mix in his silhouette and data battle.
I'm calling it too, he's the only one I know. Plus I love him 💕
@@aleeshaconnell9130 Congrats, you get a cookie
I've been waiting for this, even though he was already on the smart bosses list.
JUST AS I READ THIS ZEXION SHOWED UP
Even though she doesn't really qualify as a boss. Monica from DDLC does actually screw screw with the player's perceptions. And eventually pulls back the curtain enough for the player to realize that every choice they've made is an illusion. Anyway, even if it's only as a honorable mention, I hope that I will see Monica from Doki Doki Literature Club on this list.

Josh will never do anything with "Overrated" in the title ever again.
Worst Heroes might still be on the docket though.
One the contrary, I would love to see The Top 10 "Best" Video Game Villains! See what his favorite are (aside from Kefka which is already his favorite).
So many of these are subjective, and while you can argue these are all subjective, anything with "worst" or "overrated" in the title is just going to be trying to take advantage of rage bait.
You really want Josh to make another overrated list after how unreasonable most people were the last time he did this? People are still treating him like a spawn of Satan for that one despite him choosing his words really carefully.
@@sidhantpindiproli9112personally from my end at least it would be either Kromer or Ahab from Limbus Company. At least in terms of how hateable the devs made them out to be. Kromer literally committed genocide against Sinclair's family under the pretext of her so called "justice" and Ahab straight up sacrificed almost each and every one of her surviving crewmates all to kill the Pallid Whale, and attempts to gaslight Ishmael into thinking it was all her fault when in reality the fault was definitely Ahab's.
In terms of generally being a cool antagonist though, Erlking Heathcliff. Badass outfit, badass fight, kinda tragic backstory, and even badass reveal, what's not to love?
There is another illusion boss in the Arkham Series that is a bit underrated who creates illusions just like Scarecrow. This boss takes Batman down the rabbit hole where madness reigns from wall to wall through the rhyming words, where villains toil and psyches crumble, and that man is the Mad Hatter.
Unfortunately his best fight is in a game that’s difficult to play if you don’t own the og copy because it hasn’t been ported to any other console.
@@Goleon Yes that really does suck somewhat like Bloodborne right?
@@palestar-wt9oy - I don’t have a problem with the list. It’s Josh’s list. Not ours.
@@Goleon I don’t have a problem with the list either.
You can't escape Okami forever, Josh.
Slowly is reaching his 200k goal. His time for playing Okami will soon come.
@@shadowlinkbds I do feel bad that he'll have to face Orochi 3 times, due to the devs feeling the need to recycle bosses too much. That's the only thing keeping me from giving the game a 10/10.
@@Cellmate Eh. By the time you get to the third version, you should be so overpowered that it's much easier.
Heck, stock up on damage charms just to go even faster.
The REAL disappointment of the repeat fights is that you can't fight Lechku and Nechku again.
Scarecrow was so cool that every superhero game needs to have an hallucination sequence now
The fact that they swapped bodies at the end. 😂
Reminds me of Quarter Guy’s Top 10 Mindf**k Moments where he bodyswapped with Green Scorpion at the end.
This is the second time they swapped with each other. The first time was during the MLP review "A Royal Problem", where their pony-sonas were swapped almost all video
Honorable Mention: Infinite (Sonic Forces) Almost like Scarecrow, he uses both fear and the power of illusion from the phantom ruby to take down The Resistance. His fatal flaw? …he underestimated the Avatar’s courage that was developed and decided to spare the Avatar from his rampage, mainly just for sadistic lulz, which of course would be one of the big reasons of Infinite’s downfall. (Even Eggman call him out of sparing victims like Sonic for that!)
Princess Peach didn't exactly get the vacation she expected either in her own game! The citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom can't catch a break!
To the person who commented Omori as an honorable mention, I second that! Going into the whole thing though is so spoilery!
Frankly the Mario crew didn't get a vacation during Luigi's mansion 3 either. Thanks to King Boo and his new ghost allies.
@@shadowlinkbds Yep, that too!
The Bray Wyatt and Boogeyman references for the number 1 entry were really nice touches, great countdown as usual! When Josh makes a video you better LET HIM IN 🔥⭕️
Here's an idea for a future video if you're interested: *In YOUR opinion, what are 10 gaming villains that deserved better?*
Ooh that's a nice one. Who are some that come to mind for you?
@@BJGvideosDongrang from Limbus Company I guess? Canto 4 was such a slog so I can't say this is an apt descriptor of him but I'm pretty sure the entire reason for him distorting and going full on villain was because his inventions and achievements were often overlooked or forgotten even if they were pretty nifty themselves like for instance his regeneration ampules.

Try putting the Dead Silence theme over the doll hunt finale section for maximum spookage.
HA!
Nightmare Catnap transition. Awesome.
Was I the only one thinking about the Cheshire Cat whenever Dan sang “I’m heading out of my mind” during the transition?

@@gunnermosier6582 I’m Heading Out Of My Mind by Dan Bull.
@@jaketaller8567thank you
I think a lot of people who played Arkham Asylum thought their game crashed when they got to the third Scarecrow boss, I even read some people actually went back and restarted the game from the beginning because they thought the game was broken.
Honestly I love how out of all bosses, the monstrous version of Catnap is used for the intermission between rankings, especially since his Red Smoke is known to give others hallucinations and nightmares
Crazy thing with Vaas…an argument could be made that the whole fight was a hallucination as…you gave the knife to Citra for safe keeping…so how does Vaas have it to stab you?
A favourite of mine is Agent Rainbow from In Sound Mind.
The personification of a psychidelic drug that connects you to a collective subconscious and is trying to Kill you, and the final face off with the guy who's been jumpscaring and taunting you all game is really satisfying.
With how often he's shown up, Josh may as well do a Top Ten Scarecrow Bosses for Halloween this year. Just so that Mr. Crane can show up again
Josh, your opening is still one of the best I've seen for any sort of list! And the fact the music always changes up once the countdown starts.. is amazing!
Can't wait to see what illusionary baddies you got on here!
When it comes to the last one of the fear segments from the scarecrow.
I actually have a very interesting personal experience with the particular moment.
At the time I had just gotten my second Xbox 360 after my previous one, finally succumbed to the red ring of death.
So I already had a worry that something that I put a decent amount of money on, broke.
So when the screen glitched, my guts clinched.
And I quickly hit the power button to turn off the console.
I left it alone for an hour hoping that that would fix whatever the problem was, and when I hit the power button again, it didn’t take me to the start screen or anything like that.
Put me back in the game that I was legitimately worried had its memory erased because it looked like the start of the game was starting back up.
This game legitimately the hell out of me for a little bit there, it went to show that it was the Batmobile and Batman, who was knocked out and handcuffed that I realized that somehow this massive 4th wall break was part of the game.
So you can understand my absolute relief when crock got a hold of him and he didn’t see him throughout the rest of the game.
He managed to actually induce fear in me when I found out that he was coming back in the third game.
One honorable mention I'd put up is Zonda in Azure Striker Gunvolt 2, specifically the first fight against the "False" Zonda. The fight doesn't scream illusion, it's mostly themed after mirrors, but the fight *itself* is an illusion meant to distract and keep you busy while the real Zonda enacts the last part of her plan to become... whatever the hell that final boss was meant to be. Plus, it's just plain wacky, with projectiles constantly covering the screen and copies upon copies of Zonda coming in to maul you at any given moment.
I always love to see a Homestar Runner reference. Props to that and whoever edited that.
OK, Hellsing Ultramate reference that made me laugh out loud, you earn my subscription. Well done, sir.
You're real for the Bray Wyatt entrance stuff before the number one entrance. Especially fitting when his whole thing was mentally screwing with people and playing mind games with them. May Windham fly high.
#10's most satisfying part when the reveal happens: "Goddamit, I trusted you! FAQ YOU! AND FAQ YOUR MARKER!!!" *shots fired*
I have a knack for Bosses that use illusions or other magician-based tactics to their advantage. They might be unconventional, but that's what makes them so interesting to me.
This makes me think of an AMAZING game I've played by We Create Stuff called 'In Sound Mind'-the themes and storytelling are STELLAR and it involves playing as a therapist trying to figure out why all of your patients-and even the town at large-have been dropping like flies. The ENTIRE SOUNDTRACK is even done by the Living Tombstone, and one of them voices a main character!
Love the banter between him and his wife!
Suggestions for future video: shapesifter bosses
Bomb bosses
Speedy bosses
Fouth wall breaking bosses
Hey, I'm happy to see Command and Conquer Remastered mentioned or at least shown.
Obviously Scarecrow and The Sorrow are in the list. Those two are some of the best bosses who uses illusions.
26:07 Josh is talking about Scarecrow from Arkham Asylum, but the description says Arkham City, even though Scarecrow was never in Arkham City, not including any Easter Eggs one could find in Arkham City.
Sidenote: I think a Countdown focusing on bosses where you and a team take on one powerful foe would be an excellent idea for a future countdown.
I assume the sidenote would be for games where you don't usually have that play format like MMOs
@BJGvideos I don't play MMOs. And besides, when I'm talking about a team fighting one foe, I'm referring to you controlling multiple characters in order to take out the aforementioned foe. Think of bosses like the majority from Kirby Mass Attack, Galactus from Lego Marvel Superheroes, or the Demiurge from Persona 5 Strikers. All those bosses involve a team taking out one powerful foe.
In my school vr game, there's only 1 boss, which is the Goalilith boss fight (a boss fight against Goalius who is possessed by Lilith Morningstar and its a pain in the ass which to defeat you must play as Lucifer and Charlie Morningstar to dodge the attacks of Goalius but the second phase is where you need therapy which Lilith creates illusions of enemies Goalius dealt with but in the Fuck me difficulty bosses like the Raiden Shogun full power and the Tri Titan Ahab mode are there but the cutseen at the end where the Morningstar family is finally restored is just wholesome as hell and they are the penultimate boss of chapter 450 Family Friends)
Wee bit disappointed that Wei Lu frae Psi-Ops the Mindgate Conspiracy didn't even get a mention.
"You cannot stop the General. For Illusion to the mind is still deadly to the soul!" *Evil laughter as she turns into a demon*
The real illusion boss was the friends we made along the way
wait...
Josh: “Remember kids, if something bad happens in a Spider-Man game, it’s most likely Norman Osborn’s fault.”
Me: To be honest that’s basically the entire franchise.
My man, Zexion, made number 7 despite being ranked the 6th member of Organization XIII.
I look forward to every video you post, and this was a delight. Figured Zexion would be here, but I don't know why I didn't see #1 coming a mile away. Thanks for all you do, Josh.
Also, I always love it when Ari hijacks the video. More of the Fiery Secretary is always welcome. Best wishes for both of you, the twins, and all of the editors. Already looking forward to what's next.
My favorite types of illusion bosses are the ones that drug the player characters. Instead of magic, you're tripping balls in a battle.
Kid Danger: *wearing his mighty pup movie outfit* at 23:40, funny as all *goat baa loudly and laughs loudly stamping his hoof on the ground repeatedly* "No, not even as a gag!" Funny!
it makes sense for peter to be more serious with lee cause he saw lee as a genuinely good person lee ran a business for homeless and poor people and peters aunt may helped run the organization with peter helping out himself every once in awhile to find out this man was secretly a super villain is shocking and he wasn't wrong in wanting to make norman pay he was just wrong in how he went about it. The spider man game did a great job in showing just how hard peter had it as a super hero given that the two biggest threats to the city were people he was close with one of those individuals ended up causing the death of his last family his aunt
Woops, got a little error at the end.
Scarecrow entry says it's for Arkham City, not Asylum
Give me Scarecrow, and I'll be happy. I'm in the middle of playing Arkham Asylum for the first time, and I love the Scarecrow sequences
Are you happy now?
@@samweaver9109 haven’t watched it yet
edit: LETS GOOOOOOO!!!!
I enjoyed the touch on the entry headers. I didn't start to notice the changes until around... number 3? "Huh, when did the text become green?"
Another honorable mention: Serpentine from Azure Striker Gunvolt 3. Her whole bread and butter is using illusions of past bosses to attack you with her mist septima. Then there’s Zonda from Gunvolt 2. Their mirror septima lets them create deadly illusions including flipping the screen around and a full range of other attacks. Story wise Zonda really pulled the wool over a lot of eyes with her illusions to say the least.
*raises hand* I also thought the game glitched when it happened. I really wished I had your superpower of being immune to jump scares.
I still hate Scarecrow for making me think that Barbara was dead... FOR THE SECOND TIME NO LESS!!!
Heck yeah Josh posted a new video
@joshscorcher 15:07 funny thing about that josh I watched an interesting video that brakes down Sephiroth's whole mindset across all FF7 media and its horrifying when you realize the man has more in common with Kefka then you would first think. Sephiroth pre insanity always believed he was special and had a purpose and didn't realy care for his fellow man he saw himself above them but behaved himself and acted as he was expected to act and had at least two semi-equal friends to keep some lock on his sanity once he lost said friends and learned the truth he realized he could be himself and embrace his glorious purpose as a destroyer and revel in the violence and destruction he enjoys so much he could finally crush these pathetic bugs and be the superior being he always believed himself to be. Once he fell in the lifestream and learned his true origins he didn't care as he had access to even more knowledge and he would be this world's god or destroy it even making Jenova his so called "mother" submit to his will and manipulate his clones for this new goal for he is Sephiroth the ultimate life form this is his destiny and then he loses to Cloud and becomes enraged at losing to an ordinary guy not once but twice. This rage gets to the point he rips out all his memories, humanity and anything else that isn't focused on becoming a god and making Cloud suffer and that's were the Sephiroth remnants in Advent children came from man was so angry at Cloud he threw away every part of his soul that wasn't focused on that grudge and turned them into puppets to comeback to life. To call Sephiroth delusional is an understatement th-cam.com/video/DGqVeuJpwfI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=qWhA6CLHRuQ2dgu5
Showing Margit the Fell Omen while talking about Soulsbourne bosses in a video about illusion bosses is a stroke of genius! A nice Easter Egg, as it is...
I know from experience that people will at times immediately treat physical wounds, psychological wounds however are still not treated as seriously as they should.
Suggestions:
Top Hopeless Boss Battles
Top Voice Actors in games
Since you mentioned Remake/Rebirth...am I the only one who thinks some of the monsters are getting design tips from Res Evil?
The Magic Man from Condemned 2: Bloodshot was pretty fun. While perhaps not as trippy as other illusion bosses, the entire level feels very much like some kind of messed up dream. You're in an abandoned theater, assailed by magician assistants who sometimes seemingly spring to life from the knife boards they're bound to, and the Magic Man himself likes to appear and vanish before and during his boss battle. In fact, after falling onto a bed of spikes and being impaled on it, he vanishes after speaking with Ethan Thomas (also, why the heck are so many horror game protagonists named Ethan?).
Plus, he was played by Michael Bell, so it's basically the player being antagonized by a deranged Charles Finster (or Drew Pickles. Or Raziel. Or Duke. Or Bruce Banner)
Zoroark who was role-playing as Raikou, Entei, or Suicune.
Great list. I enjoy your content. I think you should do a list on mentor bosses or one on hero bosses. The hero boss list could cover mind controlled heroes, heroes who fight you due a misunderstanding, or games where you play as a villain and fight heroes.
Any time Ace Attorney even gets mentioned is a good day
It’s been a while since I played this mission in Cyberpunk 2077, but there was a mission to apprehend a certain cyberpsycho and once you enter the area…first off, it was like some evil ritual was taking place and the psycho kept seemingly disappearing and reappearing. I think the psycho was tapping into your own cyberware to mess with your perception, so maybe this would count as an illusion boss.
I’m surprised how scared it made me.
Mr Negative was such an AMAZING boss fight and I absolutely LOVED his battle with Miles in Spider-Man 2.
P.S. F#%# THE BABY FROM RE8! I COULDN'T EVEN SLEEP FOR DAYS WHEN I SAW THAT THING!!
My favourite Illusion Boss is the final boss of the Cataclysm Deadmines Heroic run, Vanessa Van Cleef, where you face off against the daughter of the man you slaughtered when you first completed the Deadmines back pre-Cataclysm as she watched your character slice his head from his corpse after slaying him in fear. In the battle with her she straight out says that she obviously couldn't defeat you in a straight on battle, but instead of combat she excels at hallucinogens and poisons that affect the mind, where she throws you into an acid trip of you having to face every single boss' greatest fears and a bunch of deadly traps, all ending with you having to escape the exploding area after batting against a stealthy rogue assassin who seems to have died in the explosion in reality never died due to you actually still having been suffering the hallucinations.
I like how Miles befriends like half of Peter’s rouge’s gallery in Spider-man 2
Also Harry's life was screwed regardless of Norman's actions. Here I would say that Norman showed a lot of care towards his son in spite of how morally questionable the medical treatment was. The symbiote was always supposed to be only an interim solution so he could have the time to develop the actual medicine. Norman did not want to lose his son the same way he lost his wife. Harry's re-bonding with Venom was never supposed to happen as the development of medicine was intensified when Harry fell ill again. Norman was horrified by Harry-Venom, the reason he was pissed at Spider-Men was due to Harry becoming comatose, he didn't want Harry to get hurt but also didn't want him to stay controlled by Venom, unfortunately for Norman there was no golden scenario for him and Harry
it's almost like as long you have control of your mind, all bets are off for your enemies
I think Corvus from Black Ops III deserves at least an honorable mention. The final battle is a like the 10, but more challenging as the game throws everything and the kitchen sink at you so it isn't easy. It is also divided into three stages. Also the music (A World Upside Down) is one of the best pieces every composed for a video game.
"I had to, lol."
I was thinking it to.
'Monster Baby'
Oh Man, SOMEONE Played Clock Tower.
Am i the only one who had the commercial ads seamlessly cut in whenever the hallucinations and/or tripping out started during various parts of the video? I just found that to be disturbingly perfect timing for them.
Ah yeah,my favorite boss fight in the Arkham series was the Scarecrow in Arkham City. 26:08
I did enjoy the Scarecrow boss fights but I feel like they could have been more effective in Arkham Knight, tied into the Jason Todd flashbacks. Forcing Batman to not only flashback to his parents death but forcing him to relive that feeling of never being able to get to his son in time, always just slightly to late to save the people that he cares about. It would also explain why he gets the flashbacks to Jason's torture slightly better.
Most likely scenario is that the ABOMINABLE "baby" monster is created by The Mold, as it physically crawls on the floor, bursts out of doors, and when it catches Ethan Winters, the creature instantly kills him, by EATING him!
Maybe Chris Redfield will kill it with gunfire and... well... fire, doing the world and us players a favor.
I think many believed that when Ethan dies via the Baby monster is that he dies of a seizure or heart attack maybe? It's hard to say as it's pretty much all in Ethan's head overall.
@@CrazeeAdam I'm pretty upset that THIS ABOMINATION is basically an hallucination via some Mold-infested flower pollen when Ethan enters Lady Beneviento's mansion, according to fanon wiki. I say this because HOW does get eaten alive whole translates to some form of seizure or heart attack!? One of ut's simple words is "Yummy" for crying out loud!
Even when that is the case, what causes the doors to burst open in reality?? Is it one of Beneviento's dolls? Or is it that the hallucination somehow has physical presence? Doors open when it enters a room, it's stomach has a large flap of loose flesh that acts as an limp tail, leaving a trail of blood in it's wake, and concept art says it technically is an female organism, most likely based on Rosemary Winters as an baby.
9:37 Oh I realy want him back in KH4 I can easily see him acting as a mission control for Riku and Kairi as they search for Sora in Unreality now that they've found a road there
I miss when Kingdom Hearts was about a world where multiple franchises mixed... instead of just being a disney advertisement with a convoluted story.
I liked the DLC from Rise of the Tomb Raider with Baba Yaga. The use of the "dream flower" was both cool and creative. There's more to put in but we'll go with those two.
Hoping to see Reisen from Touhou on here

Can somebody please help me to figure out what the song used in the numbering system in this video is called and who is it by?
same, I want to know too
This is another topic where I don't have a lot of examples I can give. I was thinking of describing the main villain of Megadimension Neptunia VII, but she doesn't actually use her power of messing with people's minds on either of her boss fights. They are effective enough to render other people as boss fights after she's done getting under their skin, but I don't think those count as her own.
Instead, I'll explain The White from SMT4. If angels represent Law and demons represent Chaos, these guys are nihilism. While it's strongly implied that when they try to convince you of the futility of the eternal conflict that they really are teleporting you to parallel worlds, they do have other ways to get under your skin. Namely, shapeshifting to resemble pale versions of close associates of yours. In battle they use character portraits instead of their pixel art as if they're getting uncomfortably close. The last trickery they pull is when White Issachar is dying, he drops the reverb and leaves you wondering whether his appearance was because it really was Issachar or if he's trying to manipulate you one last time.
Another good illusion boss is the doppleganger from Double Dragon 2: The Revenge. The fight is eerie and so is the music. At some points, the boss will disappear. You won’t know where he is until he possesses you and beats the crap out of you from within.
Ok I love how the countdown to number 1 becomes more distorted the closer we get to number 1.
Bosses plunging you into a hallucinated nightmare realm they control is catching on quite a lot, but so long as the resulting levels are well-executed I won't complain.
I thought you'd also credit Jenova for the 'delude Cloud into believing he is a clone to destroy his will' trick. Whichever of FFVII's villains did that deserves a spot. Illusions of sight and sound are one thing, but forcing a powerful delusion on the main character is another. The simplest version is probably convincing the hero that they are an irredeemable bloodthirsty psycho after all the minions they've mowed down in the last 20 hours.
I would like to give a shout out to Dr. Albert from Dead Rising 3. Nick was first given a task to destroy Hemlok’s supply drops around the city until you get a surprise attack from the mad Doctor himself. Like Scarecrow from the Batman franchise he injects you with a with something that numbs the pain you feel, but also makes you think that some of the survivors Albert kidnapped is Albert himself. You need to find the real Albert by using the boxes of dissected organs to make the real Albert angry and open to your attack. Only one small problem, Albert confiscated your equipment! If you do get low on health you can still look around for healing items. Inject him with enough of his own medicine and he soon falls into his own hallucinations and unknowingly kills himself thinking he is being eaten by zombies. Even after the fight, you still get to hear the screams of some of Albert’s victims begging to be freed of their torment. Giving you insight that the mad doctor has been stealing and selling organs to the black market for a very long time. A fantastic surprise fight in a boring and tedious story quest.
"Scariest moment in any resident evil game."
Me, knowing about it, that invincible abomination from re4remake, ouroboros, the cockroaches, nemesis, giant enemy spider, snake, and Mr. X: "BOY, YOU AIN'T GOT ANY SENSE IN THAT HEAD DO YA?!?"
I didn't think much of Zexion either until Birth By Sleep. Then he became someone to protect. And then we found out what was really going on and all the implications therein. Poor baby.
I'll give you a forced stealth warning for Rebirth Josh. No spoilers though.
This will be interesting, I thought ghosts .
The Eagle from Ghost of Tsushima is very well crafted for a DLC villainess. In the climax against her, Jin must overpower her special poison, by overcoming the darkness created in him when he learned that Tenzo, his new ally, is the one who actually killed his father.
look at the bright side Josh...your going to be facing your own worst nightmare in just a few years...when the Twins start to ask questions...
top 10 revenge bosses I'm guessing
Revenge or family bosses.
dunno about the last spot.
I truly do think the Mad Hatter sequence from Arkham Origins is a better illusionary battle compared to the repetitive stages of the Scarecrow, where the gameplay is the same each time.
The Mad Hatter illusionary battle truly bends the world and reality, goons walking through mirrors, mind-puzzles, tricks, traps and dangers.
9:06 someone probably commented this already, but in Japan, instead of the usual “red for stop and green for go” in traffic lights, they have blue instead of green.
Bosses that weaponize our greatest fears to turn them against us command ALL the respect. After all, the greatest battlefield is that of the mind; sure, we may often operate on the belief that our mind is as great a weapon as the weapons we choose to wield, but even weapons are battlefields in of themselves: lose ground on that and what have you left? Quoth Sun Tzu, "If you know the enemy and yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself, but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle." The courage to fight comes from knowing what you fear isn't an illusion, just as the wind is not an illusion either: just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it doesn't have power over you, but using that power as a force at your back...that's the key that unlocks the many doors that lead to victory. ;)
Very funny, Ari. This is why we all love you so much
23:54 the correct answer, and not a bad foreshadowing gag before it.
