  • Let's take a ride on the Los Angeles Metro's Red Line subway. We depart Union Station and travel into Hollywood, getting off at Hollywood/Vine. Here we'll see a number of trains arrive and depart before heading back to downtown. Nearing the end of our ride we'll get a rear-view of the subway tracks as the train makes its last few stops.
    This video was filmed during my vacation in the Los Angeles area in October, 2014. Enjoy!

    I get the impression that the LA subway and public transportation is a hidden gem. Most people are so indoctrinated into the "you must have a car" to get around in los angeles mindset, that the few who know about this feel blessed. No traffic, and vertually no people when you consider the fact that los angeles have million of people. I live in stockholm and the subway looks the same here, and there are millions less people here.

      It’s the most underrated hidden secret. Improving year after year with more rail lines, but people just assume it doesn’t go anywhere without ever having tried it.

      Metro Rail sees half a million passengers a day, and growing. Doesn’t seem to be a hidden gem. 74% of LA County voted to approve a tax plan for Metro Rail expansion too.

      David Nissim half a million passengers a day is nothing for a city with a population of over 4 million. In Sao Paulo, we have a population of 12 million people, and the subway system sees around 7.8 million passengers per day.

    The train system in LA is a 360 degree turn from the past. In the 1970-80s the only way to get around was by bus, RTD. I lived on 108th ST & Western. Bus ride to Hollywood or Downtown. Nearly 2 hours. Now with the rails it takes 1 hour. Also by bus from Hollywood to downtown. 1 and a half hours. Now by rail only less than 30 minutes.

    I'm born n raised in LA County. I've rode the trains on several occasions. Very comfortable and fast. In the 1970s II would ride on the RTD. That was the only mass transit we had. Never thought I'd see so much improvement with the addition of light rail and subways here. When the Blue Line opened in July of 1990, we were there to ride it.

  • @lohphat

    I didn't know until I saw this video that the train horn sounds are identical to the old Pacific Electric Red Cars!
    I haven't ridden the LA trains since the Blue Line opened out of Long Beach in the 1980s.

    I love the sound it makes when approaching the station. You don't hear it so much inside the train, only outside. It makes those the octaves tones, then a steady tone. It gets me everytime I hear it. I hope someone someday make a video just about that sound and why/how it makes that sound. I know, gears or is it power decreasing? But it would be cool if a more in depth video was made just about that sound.

      +Stuart Alvarez While I was riding the train, at times when I wasn't taking video, I had my iPod recording audio of the train station announcements & stuff. When departing a station they let out a short, but loud blast of the horn. It was loud even from the inside! I wish I could have gotten some video of that from the platform.

    • @Pompadour123
      @Pompadour123 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Bobby Harvey Whenever I ride the LA subway, I always hear the whistle. I only heard the horn around twice or so. Why do they have both? I wish they used the horn as default, they sound really nice.

      @TrashBulldogProductions 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Chi Hyun Ahn Someome told me that the air horn is a yard warning when the trains are on the surface at the Santa Fe Yard. But it is sometime used when the driver sees a safety hazard when approaching the platform. It would be cool if it was used as a default.

      It used to be customary for the red line trains to use it when they were at least halfway to the station but still in the tunnel. It was a very awesome sound as it echoed up through the tunnel, but they were getting too many complaints I guess so they installed the dainty whistles.

      tbh i agree and im from L.A. too currently live in Phoenix i personally feel like if the city puts a little more effort into these transits more it could definitely lower the traffic especially on the 405 freeway and the I10. like NYC has a really good subway system but things in New York are a lot closer vs in LA which is more spreaded out

    As a visitor to LA several times, I asked my friend who lives there why he doesn't use the metro and why most other people don't. He said obiviously people love their cars in California, but also that for as suburban as SoCal is, it makes more sense to ride something like Metrolink or Caltrain if you actually live around the cities of LA or San Fran for example. If you look at the map, it seems to almost have been built for tourists as from what I've read and understood, very few people actually live in the downtown or immediate metro of LA. SoCal is much less dense than a place like NYC so commuter rail is the method of choice for most who live in the area. The metro 'doesn't go anywhere' to quote my friend although the orange line up to Chatsworth hits one of Metrolink's first stops so, I guess it kind of goes farther north than in any of the other directions. I rode the metro a few times and there seemed to be quite a few homeless and the trains were empty. Didn't really inspire confidence but the trains were mostly clean and pretty fast for an underground metro. Not as fast as maybe say MARTA but, pretty speedy.

    There is no doubt in my mind I'll continue using LA Metro. Public Transportation is important here in LA since the county is so heavily rely on and heavily congested with cars. Metro Rail is the hidden gem for all Los Angelenos, and I am willing to bet it'll lessen traffic and lessen the amount of cars being on roads every single day.

      Los Angeles actually has much more extensive rail network than a lot of East Coast cities. It's completely false that you can't get anywhere in L.A. without a car. I've traveled there many times and used only public transportation. It's an easy and mostly pleasant way to get awound.

      I can understand your point of view. In high school I went to school in East Los Angeles and I knew a lot of people who did take the bus/rail metro lines. However personally I think I had only ridden it once or twice because I had never done so before. Prior to high school, with the exception of the visible rail line on the 105, I had no idea Los Angeles anything like a Metro. I've since lived in Eastern Europe and China and have seen massive rail systems that further dwarf what Los Angeles has. Considering that its so easy to finance used and new cars here we seldom see or know people who actually take the metro. In China I used it daily because there's a stop in convenient places in 1st tier cities but in Los Angeles the suburbs really don't have metro stations and so you learn to drive and deal with the traffic. Silly people who have never been in metro dense world cities don't realize that making people aware of the metro isn't going reduce driving. You have to make it accessible, affordable and convenient. This means expanding lines with stations that extend into major suburbs with convenient areas to leave your car. Bus transportation systems that take you to the metro in an efficient manner and making it all much less of a hassle to do and afford. The legal headaches with extending lines, building them efficiently and opening them up with mass appear are massive hurdles. Look at the Pasadena freeway, that thing has been wanting to be extended for decades. The 105 was able to be built so relatively quickly because it just made a path through poor neighborhoods that no one cared about but it was a very helpful project. If money wasn't an issue and if they could do to metro rail expansion to what they did with the 105 freeway, Los Angeles would have a world class metro line. However a lot of big if's of course. Who want's to pay for it? Who want's to approve it? Who wants to ride it? It have to be so damn amazing and convenient that people who say "Oh yeah I ride the rail since its so easy to get to and cheap compared to driving a car 5 days a week" Get real.

    I lived in L-A, or in one of its many suburbs, and I found using the subway to always be a nice experience. If you lived in the bedroom communities, West Covina, Covina or other suburbs EAST of the downtown area You'd catch the Blue line INTO downtown, transfer to a subway train and get downtown, or further on the Subway ( Red Line) Those naysayers, including long time residents have been brainwashed/programmed to stay in their cars, and cuss and fuss about TRAFFIC, when you have a near world-class transit system at your fat fingertips. I no loner live in L-A, but I have my children who live there. I know they don't use the system, even though they live in the Inland Empire, an area heavily serviced by the entire system.

      By 2017, Burbank airport will have the Orange line light rail(trolley), Amtrak & Metrolink trains that is good. It
      makes sense to travel by rail with gas prices going back up, crowded streets & highways nationwide in all
      Metropolitian areas.

      these were the original plans when Metro was in the process of making a subway in L.A. the Red line was supposed to go to LAX but instead it went to North Hollywood, there are videos of the future projects that metro were planning. if you typed in Building Los Angeles Metro Red Line,1991 it gives you a brief story of the projects of the L.A. Metro system.

    • @themoviedealers
      @themoviedealers 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are expanding the system right now. Gold line to Claremont. Purple Line to Westwood. New Crenshaw Line to LAX. Extending green line to Torrance. New line to Cerritos. Subway under Sepulveda pass. New light rail in the valley.

    • @Geotpf
      @Geotpf 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are extending the Purple Line right now, and adding (a lot) to the light rail network. However, there are no firm plans on additional heavy rail subway lines, nor to extend the Red Line.

    Thanks for sharing, do you know how much it cost to leave my car at union station if I want to take the red line to hollywood? or do you think is better if I go to a public parking in LA?

    • @BobbyHarveyVideoProductions
      @BobbyHarveyVideoProductions  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +MAOG76 O It looks like parking at Union Station is $12-$14 for 24 hours but space is limited, there are other lots nearby for much less. Doing a search on parkopedia.com brings up a lot of results. When I was in Los Angeles I rode Amtrak in from the Midwest so I didn't have a car.

    People think that the only way to get around in LA is by car. And yet LA has one of the LARGEST public transit networks in the nation, with its subway system having the highest ridership per mile of any US subway.
    This is the effect of car-loving politicians. I bet they’re just mad that 74% of their county approved a tax plan to fund Metro expansion
