This musical period is the best of Michel (theatre des Champs Elysées the greatest album I’ve ever heard in solo piano !). I m listening this musical genius every day since ten years now… and it is still magic and new every time. Thanks Michel
I have that live album of Petrucciani's; I was just getting to know him in around 2000. I happened to hear his version of Besame Mucho, which was played at the concert as well. I got lucky and was listening to a jazz station and was recording onto tape when played over the radio. Played the tune to death; didn't know what the song was until several years later and got the whole album. One of my favourites.
When he started playing A Train and I saw that womans reaction 💯🙈 what a moment Incredible and he just nonchalantly explains it like it was nothing haha. Having physical disabilities or differences as he refers to it just makes it even more incredible
I got to see him on a few occasions in the 80s and 90s in San Francisco, Oakland and Saratoga CA. He was such an amazing talent and cool dude. I didn't know he was responsible for bringing Charles Lloyd out of retirement. That's monumental.
Hi RazzerRaw, In the interview he talks about mashing-up classical music with jazz improvisation. Having Shazamed the exert it comes up with a Chopin Nocturne Op. 55 No. 2 and there are similarities to the theme but it's definitely Michel's take on it! Cheers

Do any other pieces like this come to mind ? I’ve been loving this ballad style. I’ve heard many of his Including his Besame Mucho, Flamingo, Hidden Joy, Night Sun in Blois, Would love to find more pieces with this style :)

This song is called "Lush Life" by Billy Strayhorn. I too love Michel Petrucciani's rendition! He often plays this song alone or in a medley. I also recommend Phineas Newborn Jr.'s version.
It is his from an album he made at about that time. I saw him at Sunrise Records in Fort Lauderdale in 1986. It was a small room and he was there for a benefit for another musician. Joe Sample was there and it was magic. Funny, but I can't remember if Red Rodney was there or if it was Ira Sullivan. Too many years ago. The place was packed and he came in on another musician's shoulder.
