I just bought my second cabin tent. The first one (a Coleman 6 man) lasted 14 years and now that I am retired the ease of setup and inside head space are wonderful.

This vid was really helpful. My husband and I have camped in dome tents for many years, but with a 4 year old & another on the way, I'm researching cabin tents. I'm just SO DONE with crouching down or having a kid crawling across me when we have to be inside for more than 2 seconds in a row. I appreciate the list of pros & cons of this style of tent, as well as how to mitigate condensation. We are in Colorado, so dealing with mountain rain & cold is part of the deal.
For families it's honestly a decent option, especially because you can use cots too so you can be up off the ground a bit, which I enjoy!

Yes, so many new campers just are totally overwhelmed!
Use a rubber hammer to puppets in, if you do not want to bend the pegs. If ground is too hard also buy a few 200 mm or 8 in hex headed coach screws and use an electric screw driver to put them in.

We just started camping this year and I got an instant cabin tent for my family that we already used twice. I thought it was great for the space and ease of setup. I'm not sure what better alternative at this time. I'm still learning about this.
instant tents are the best and nothing will sell me to go back to playing around with rods. youre an adult... tents are cheap. accidentally break something.. just buy another one. if your family enjoys camping you should have a spare in your roster.
We just spent a week in a cabin tent on a road trip on the east coast. Multiple pack ups and tear downs. It was easy and worked well for this road trip!
I’ve been looking into these since I’m subscribed to your channel I saw your previous review. I’m the first one to admit I have a tent and a stove addiction lol. I have about 6 tents but only 2 you can stand up. I have a Gazelle T3 that I bought a few years back, now they’re a lot more expensive. Great tent but if you think these are bulky, the Gazelle is even more although great quality. You keep on tempting me with these! Who knows keep it up and I will have to hold you responsible for me getting a 7th tent. Lol. Samantha this is another great review thanks.
I've been eyeballing that gazelle tent as well but so far have been able to resist the urge to splurge!
@@LoneCrowAdventures fortunately I got mine about 5 years ago, they were never cheap but more affordable at least for me. They’re great but I had the gazebo collapsing on me, my guess is the lack of floor and 50 Mph gusts on the sand (hard to stake) in Baja didn’t help lol, but the tent is been much better in wind. I got a Lynx Alps Mountaineer 2 person for Baja. I learned my lesson at 3 AM chasing equipment, glad nobody was filming. I had been looking at both reviews you have on the Coleman, did you see that Coleman is going to do something different with their tents? Apparently they’ll start making tents on the $500 range but too heavy for backpacking although they seem to think differently, stoves into the $250 range. I’m getting one of their gasoline double burner one (told you I have an addiction), have a 1 burner and love it, they’re heavy but built like tanks. Sorry about the lengthy response, I’m 65 and all the old folks like me that “camp” go in RVs, I’m a tent camper finding it difficult to relate, in my opinion tent camping is the way.

That's a great suggestion. I don't think they'd perform well but it would be interesting to try out. I'd also like to try out those insulated covers that look like sleeping bags for tents. Again. Probably doesn't work great but I'm curious.

Definitely want a fly for any single-wall nylon tent.
I think the best tent for standing room and wind and rain resistance is my ancient Sears and Roebuck, Hillary modified dome tent. It has rigid, steel poles (Hollow, heavy-duty pipe) that are 3 or 4 feet long, anchored at the 4 corners. About 6 inches from the top of those poles is a 30-40-degree angle bend - the perfect angle to match the angle of the fiberglass poles that form an arch over the rest of the tent.
The fly has its own set of 2 poles. Those poles are 45 degrees out of phase with the tent poles, so they form a little porch over the 4 sides, so you can leave your windows open at least part way, in all weathers, including heavy winds. If there isn't much wind, you can leave 'em unzipped, entirely.
Anyway, it's a bear to set up by yourself in a heavy wind (risk of breaking the fiberglass poles), but once it's set, the forces are so perfectly balanced, and it's so sturdy for that first 3 or 4 feet, that I think it'd survive a hurricane, as long as the 4 corners of the floor were staked. Exposure of the fiberglass poles to lateral force is minimal, unless you're short and trying to set it up by yourself in strong winds.
I lived in my 11x11 modified dome for most of a summer. I was going to teach advanced calculus for the first time in the fall, and I sat and did proofs when I wasn't fishing for cutthroat. To this day, one of my most enjoyable summers.
Coleman's the most popular, because it's the cheapest. If you take good care of it, and don't have kids or dogs trying to run through the screens or anything, they're good enough to get the job done. They're just a little too fragile for my taste. And they will take some rough use, especially if you have kids or dogs.
I don't know if you can still find a modified dome, with the hybrid poles. That's the only weak spot I see in these high-profile cabin tents, with almost-vertical sidewalls supported only by fiberglass.
I owned a Hilary dome tent at one time. It went through 1x storm and one of the poles snapped and it actually ripped through the tent body and the tent fly.

Bike camping is fun I take me a 2 person tent little stove and stuff I put it in my backpack in my bike basket
One of my big concerns with cabin tents is the immediate opposite of one of the strengths you listed. The cabin tent gets a lot of its excellent interior space from its huge footprint. Many people who try to use a cabin tent in various state park campgrounds will be disappointed to find the site they reserved is too small to accommodate the cabin tent they planned to use for their stay. So I recommend checking the site size against the footprint requirements of your cabin tent when planning an adventure.
I feel more comfortable relying on a tarp over the cabin tent rather than the oftentimes under-sized rainfly provided by the manufacturers. The addition of a tarp may allow the tent users to open windows/vents that would otherwise have to remain closed during heavier inclement weather events.
Finally, I would not rely on the weak stakes often supplied by manufacturers. I would immediately replace those stakes with heavier, longer, beefier stakes. Also consider replacing the guy line cordage with something that does not soak up water.
This is true, especially in the Carolinas and Georgia which have 10 by 10 or 10 by 12 foot tent pads. Also in wind heavier stakes are much sturdier.

What water repellent do you recommend for periodically waterproofing the exterior?

Lol, no I have never used AC while camping. I've done a lot of glamping things but not that. I'm from Wisconsin so it doesn't get too hot here in the summer.
There is a water proof spray that you can apply which should be part of regular tent maintenance anyhow. The single wall doesn't bother me though as I always string up a tarp as a rain fly for added coverage and one on the ground underneath the floor.
Yep. It's a silicone based DWR. You can get it at the hardware store.
I have multi tents for all uses 1-2 season and 4 season .
I own a multitude of tents as well. Different styles and different shapes and sizes for all seasons.

No the instant tent doesn't have low mesh like a lot of other tents. I think you'd be fine in it.

i remember sleeping out in the front yard in my friends cabin type tent.always had a funky smell not sure what that was? BTW Coleman is going out of business heard on the news recently.

Hey Samantha, Carmen here bothering you again lol. As in my previous comment I was looking for an instant tent looking into the Coleman, I read yours have been great but many comments about others having problems with condensation and water leaks. I came across an Alps mountaineering Miramar dome 6 men, I have the same brand but the Lynx 2 for heavy gusts and I love it. Alps is renowned for their quality at affordable prices. This is a big tent but no sleeves (easy to pitch) just hooks like my smaller one. What’s your take on dome tents? I know cabin ones are very popular nowadays but let’s not forget how many old folks like me had dome ones that lasted forever. Are you familiar with Alps Mountaineering? I value your opinion even if you’re not familiar with the name I’d like your opinion in general. Thanks.
My go to tent is always a dome tent if I'm not sure. They hold up great in weather and handle wind very well. They can shed massive amounts of water too which is key if you're in a storm. Just be careful that you set up canopy side of rain fly away from winds and you should be set up. Alps Mountaineering is a great brand.

I'm not really sure why you're singling out instant/cabin tents for the issues you're describing.
These things happen with every tent.
Cabin tents however, generally suffer fewer issues when setting them up because of how easy and straightforward the process is.
I prefer instant tents because they tend to be better made and less hassle.
Condensation will happen with every tent. Its just your body's moisture from evaporated sweat and from your breath, condensing against the cooler inner surface of the tent.

Yes condensation will happen in any tent but I've noticed that cabin tents have more severe condensation than dome tents in particular. I've used several and this is an observation I've made.
