There is a great story about how the Kingdom of Man took one of the Hebrides peninsulas. After a war when dividing the land between the Scottish lords and the Manx, the Scots declared the King of Man could rule everything he could "pass his ships rudder over", thinking he would only claim the isles. Instead he beached his ship and had the crew carry the boat across the narrowest points of one of the peninsulas. As per the agreement he was allowed to keep the peninsula.
