that asd is very important to prevent your equipment from being damaged by your 1 degree diff setting . Your compressor will fail soon if you don't increase your diff and set a 3 to 5 min asd time .I am a service tech who works on refrigeration a/c equipment . I don't know what type of equipment you have but this is not going to work for long if you keep short cycling your compressor. This is Just my opinion take it or not, but depending on the size of your equipment it will cost you money and down time to make repairs when it happens.
Oscar Sandoval To add to your comment: the latent heat conserved in the significant quantity of liquid in the freezer (beer in this case) will not allow the temperature of your beer to vary widely. For instance, even if you have a 5 degree differential, the beer will never warm or cool that quickly. Your compressor will last years longer and your beer will never know the difference!

Brew Dudes I would consider the Short Cycle feature very important. It was the main reason I purchased a digital over a cheaper analog controller. After cut off this is a rest period the controller will wait before it will start the unit again regardless of temp (adj 1-12 mins). This allows the compressor a break between run periods and allows head pressure to bleed of so the compressor doesn't restart against pressure and possibly tripping a thermal overload switch. The short cycle period is also the default delay period after a power outage in case the compressor was running when the power went out so it doesn't immediately restart.
My understanding is you should set the differential to 10 degrees so as to not over work the compressor. The temperature of your carboy isn't going to change much in a sealed fridge or freezer.
I'm using the A419 thermostat for one of my fridge and have set the SP to 38 °F & dif to 5. But the fridges temperature is somehow still sitting on between 76 °F to 88 °F. I'm almost certain that its not the thermostat thats malfunctioning but the motor for the fridge it getting old. Is my settings for the thermostat correct?
Your settings seem fine. I'd unplug from the controller and see if the fridge will chill on its own. If not then the compressor is likely burnt out. -Mike

The controller is registering a temp of about 110F. This is obviously not right - ambient temp should is probably 70F. I'm at stage 3 on a WineExpert Kit and the SG is hanging at .998 (needs to get to .996 or below) so I'm getting a bit concerned. Any thoughts? The Controller and probe are less than 1 YO. Just a bad bit of equipment? The probe or the controller? Suggestions?
Jim Lucas Do you have a secondary thermometer in the area to confirm the ambient temp. I'd measure the temp of a glass of water and see if your johnson controller accurately measures that. Then you'd know if you have a faulty piece of equipment. FWIW, I have done those wine kits before. If its stable at .998 then you should feel free to move on to the next step. the difference between 0.998 and 0.996 is probably not a real difference and is within the error of making readings. -Mike

I looked in the box the Thermostar came in (no, i'm not a hoarder but maybe close) and there was another sensor to plug into the controller - this one with a short probe. I inserted the sensor into the Thermowell, fed it down to the bottom, plugged it into the the controller, plugged in the controller and, well, you know the rest - it (the 12" Thermostar) had a bad sensor. It's now working fine with the new sensor. I'm going to follow the instructions, wait a day or two, see if the SG drops another at least another.002 as suggested. Thank you much for the prompt come back on this. I'm new at this stuff, enjoying the heck out of it, and have found (for the most part) the home-brewing community to be quite helpful. Thanks again.
So you literally just plug any basic refrigerator into this and you can control the exact temp? also is this more or less the same as the "thermostar" dual mode? Thanks for any help
Raymond Johansen If you are trying to keep things warmer than room temperatures, I would use it to control a device that provides heat like a Fermwrap instead.
I used the dial version on a brand new 15 cu whirlpool freezer. Controller temp set at 65, freezer temp 61. The freezer keeps running (26 hrs) does not shut off? Any thoughts?
+John Davis Weird. Not sure why it would not shut off if the inside temp is lower than the set temp unless the controller is set to heat rather than to cool.
Richard Smith Not without disabling the AC units threshold setting. Its defaulted to cut out at a certain temp. I don't know how its done exactly but I am sure there are answers out there. -Mike

When I bought my A419's, they did not include any power cords. I had to source them from extension cords myself.
